Kate Winslet on Gender Pay Gap Conversations: 'It's a Bit Vulgar'

Kate Winslet chats away on her phone while out doing some shopping on Wednesday (November 11) in London, England.

The 40-year-old Oscar winning actress weighed in on the wage gap conversation with regards to women making less than men. Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and more have spoken out on the topic.

“I’m having such a problem with these conversations,” Kate told BBC’s Newsbeat. “Because they keep coming up, and I understand why they are coming up, but maybe it’s a British thing. I don’t like talking about money; it’s a bit vulgar, isn’t it? I don’t think that’s a very nice conversation to have publicly at all. I’m quite surprised by these conversations to be honest, simply because it seems quite a strange thing to be discussing out in the open like that.”

Kate also answered if she’s felt sexism in the entertainment industry.

“Honestly, no,” Kate added. “And if I’d ever been in that situation I would have either dealt with it or removed myself from it. Quite honestly, I’m sure I would. But I don’t think I’ve ever come across that. I find all this quite uncomfortable. I have to be honest. It’s a bit awkward really. We’re very lucky, and I feel so blessed. I’m perfectly capable of standing up for myself. I’m a strong individual, and that’s important to me. Yeah, absolutely. I haven’t ever felt as though I’ve really had to stick up for myself just because I’m a woman. I can’t honestly say that’s happened.”

FYI: Kate is carrying a Bandolier phone case.

How can you expect a change if you don’t discuss about it?
Anyway actors earn too much. They should pay the men the same they paid to women. Less.

  • Penny Dreadful

I believe her. That’s been my lifelong experience as well. No one runs over me. Anyone who has tried either gets straightened out or I leave. We don’t all have a to wave a feminist flag.

  • Penny Dreadful

Kate Winslet doesn’t back down. She won’t apologize. She’ll carry on like normal regardless of what the feminists say. I like that about her.

  • Bunny Montey

I’m glad she’s not whining about not earning more millions of dollars than the millions actors already get. It’s silly. It’s silly when someone who is already getting millions of dollars whines that they should get more. It’s not relate-able like it would be if it were regular people with regular paychecks. I mean, what, you think should be able to buy 3 more mansions than you already have? lol Get 5 more cars to add to your 50 car collection? I can’t feel sorry for millionaires.

It’s not misleading. Brits use that word differently than Americans do.

  • starchy

Oh please, if You were the one getting millions less than your co-stars just because they were a different gender it would piss you off too. Pay them all less and the same.

  • Bunny Montey

I’m not gonna feel sorry for millionaires lol. It’s not gonna happen. I’m not gonna sympathize with their 1 percenter problems. They’re gonna be just fine~ If anything, they really need to get over themselves and recognize that they all are doing better than the rest of us, and that should be good enough for them.

  • SW

I totally agree with her. I don’t get that there are actresses who act like victims while they are making millions.

  • FormerLamark

Pay gap is NOT the problem of only one woman, and NOT only millionaire film stars! Pay gap is the problem of 3,5 billion women in the whole world!
It does matter if a waitress earns 300 dollars while male waiter earns 600 dollars for the same work! This is the problem of the whole world, not saying about the real meaning of it, to wit, men steal money from working women!!!

Single, divorced, widow, pensioner women’s poverty and child poverty is due to this in the whole world and this is a giant economic problem!

If nobody talks about it nothing will change.

  • SW

Those actresses only talk about themselves. Very few of them actually do something to support women all over the world in all pay grades. If they really would want a change not only for themselves they would start charity projects and be politically active.

  • charlie

It’s not about “Whoa is me. I make millions but I should be making more”. It’s about gender equality. The fact is that in almost every industry all around the world, women are not paid as much as men are for doing the same job. The point of all of this is to start the conversation and to get more women to stand up for themselves and to get more men to stand with women in the fight for gender equality and to close the pay gap. I am an actress. I know how lucky I am to be doing this thing that I love so much. I also choose to give a lot of my money to people who need it. But if I was told that I would be making x amount of dollars and my male coworkers would make 2 or 3 times what I was making, in any industry, you are goddamn right I would speak up. If that means everyone makes less, FINE. It’s not about MORE. It’s about EQUAL.

  • Mierzwiak

    Such a classy, intelligent woman.

  • Tigerlilly

She’s just great. Love her <3

  • FormerLamark

But you admit that this problem is exist???? Or who/what do you want to defend???

If you haven’t noticed I talk about pay gap in general and NOT her!

Anyway, this problem should be solved NOT by millionaire female film stars by charity and becoming politics but EVERY WOMAN in the world in unit! Every woman should protest and act against it and not only wait for other people to solv it instead of them, and celebrity should talk about it continuously not to be forgotten.

Charity does NOT solve the gender discrimination and does NOT change the way of thinking of people about how much women’s work worth!!!!!!!!!!!!
