'Star Wars: Episode 8' Details - 6 Things We Know So Far!

Everyone who has seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens now wants to know… what is going to happen in Episode VIII?!

So, let’s recap what we know about the upcoming movie so far (but beware of reading on if you want to avoid minimal spoilers):

  • 1. The release date!
It was announced back in March that the eighth movie in the franchise will be released on May 26, 2017.
  • 2. The creative team!
Rian Johnson, who is best known for his work on 2012′s Looper, will be both writing and directing the movie. Kathleen Kennedy will return to produce the film alongside series newcomer Ram Bergman, who is Rian‘s producer partner.
  • 3. The script is done!
Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in the new trilogy, confirmed that she has already read the script for the upcoming sequel. “I have. It’s very good; very good. Let’s see VII first and then we’ll talk about VIII,” she joked with Variety.
  • 4. The main The Force Awakens cast members are returning!
Kathleen told a UK outlet at the London premiere this week that “there will be a handful of new cast members in Episode VIII but also all the cast members you see here tonight will be in it as well.” The cast members in attendance included Daisy, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, and more!
  • 5. Filming has already begun!
Back in September there were reports that The Force Awakens would be doing reshoots in Ireland, but Lucasfilm confirmed to EW that they were actually beginning to shoot sequences for Episode VIII. Filming is expected to resume in January.
  • 6. You can expect something “weird” and different!
Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote The Force Awakens and some of the earlier movies, says that Rian is “going to make some weird thing. If you’ve seen Rian’s work, you know it’s not going be like anything that’s ever been in Star Wars.”

    *
Kylo Ren is really Ben Solo, Han Solo’s and Princess (now General) Leia
Organa’s son (and Darth Vader’s grandson and Luke Skywalker’s nephew). He was training
to be a Jedi Knight, under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker. But he turned away
from the Light and came over to the Dark Side, which was the reason for Luke
blaming himself and disappearing. He’s conflicted because he still has some of
the Light in him. Leia and Han split up over their son’s turn to the Dark Side.
Han felt he had to go and grieve separately. But they reunite and then he goes
on the mission in which Kylo/Ben kills him.

    * Han Solo dies. He is killed by his own son, Kylo Ren, after Kylo Ren tricks
him. Han Solo thinks he is hugging his son and that his son has come back from
the Dark Side to the Light. But it is a dirty trick, and Kylo Ren stabs and
kills Han Solo with his lightsaber.

    * Rey is apparently Luke Skywalker’s daughter (though it’s possible she’s
Leia’s daughter, but I doubt it), and she brings him his lightsaber. She has
the Force with her and is an untrained Jedi who can do Jedi mind tricks. She is
also apparently, Kylo Ren’s first cousin. She beats Kylo Ren in a lightsaber
fight but doesn’t have the cojones to finish him off. Then, suddenly, the
ground splits between the two of them, so she cannot kill him at that .

    * Luke Skywalker is only in the movie for about 30 seconds at the end of the
movie, and, no, he is neither evil nor a villain. He appears in the scene in at
the very end in which Rey locates him and gives him his lightsaber. He went missing because he was disillusioned and
upset over what happened with his nephew Ben Solo turning to the Dark Side and
becoming villain and murderer Kylo Ren.

    **SPOILERS ABOVE** DON’T READ OP

Holy crap, thank god i already saw the movie before glancing at this.

  • MIT SCIENCE EXPLORATION LABS

No… just no… Read the spoilers on the Internet like everyone else and forget about it. IT’S NOT WORTH SEEING!!

What an absolute tosser you are!

  • Alain

    Ummm.

That’s utterly wrong. The movie was fantastic. My girlfriend who isn’t really even into fantasy of any kind and didn’t even SEE the old movies loved it.

You are entitled to your opinion. But your opinion is wrong.

    Bless you.

  • Atrocalypse

Harrison Ford? But isn’t he done with Star Wars?

  • Rex Howard

You mean an article talking about Episode 8 might include spoilers about Episode 7? Who would have thought that??

  • Ariana

Saw the movie. Its nothing but a repeat of Episode 4. The ‘suprise’ in Episode 8 will be that Kylo Ren is some how related to Rey. How original.
Carp movie and crap plot line.

  • Ariana

He will appear as a ghost somehow. Even though he is not force sensitive.

  • zXR34P3RXz

I find it hilarious all these jackasses complaining about the movie. First no one held a gun to your head to go see it. Second obviously you know nothing of the star wars stories beyond. So take your status trolling somewhere else smdh

  • zXR34P3RXz

    Lmfao smdh

  • Bill Albrecht

The surprise you speak of was pretty much already revealed in episode 7. You can deduce that by the way Rey interacts with Leia.

  • Pat Templar

We all have a right to share our opinions, but you should allow others to make their own opinions instead of telling ppl it’s not worth seeing. I am as critical as they come but I loved this movie! It was perfect for a STAR WARS movie! I enjoyed it so much! I laughed, I cried, I was at the edge of my seat the whole movie even though I expected some of the things to happen it still got to me the way it was designed to. This movie felt more like a Star Wars movie than all three prequels did. I loved the decision to go with traditional make up and special effects rather than using CGI for every little thing, sure there was a lot of CGI but it was done properly not obnoxiously. Anyone who is complaining is missing the whole point and I’m probably assuming correctly that they are negative on everything. Nothing ever makes them happy and it makes them feel better about themselves dissing everything and everyone. I’d like to see you try doing a squeal as good as Force Awakens. I am looking forward to seeing it again with my wife and daughter over the next week or two and I would suggest everyone to give it a shot. Chances are you will enjoy it as much as I did unless of course nothing pleases you but pretentious conversations with insecure ppl who talk everything and everyone down!

  • Pat Templar

History repeats itself! You are missing the point! Obviously you never read any of the books or comics, and yes I know they technically dont exist in the movie universe but the new movies obviously have taken some from the books and comics. Do you not understand the force? The never ending battle between light and dark, between balance and chaos. There are similarities to episode IV but there are a lot of differences as well. Personally I loved it and cannot wait to see it again and am super excited to see episode 8. This is STAR WARS ok! It fit STAR WARS perfectly! If you want something else then go watch and support something else!!!!

  • Ariana

Moron. I know about SW and I can tell you this was nothing but a cheap knock off from the originals. It lacked a story too. Overall awful SW movie and the villains were utterly pathetic. Even the 2 main leads lacked major acting skills.

  • Ariana

I agree. We will get a lame revision of the Vader vs. Luke Battle except with Rey and Ren in the next episode. He will reveal he is either her brother her cousin.

  • Antonio

    true!

  • Andrew Ray

Here’s a detail about episode VIII nobody seems to be talking about. There were stormtroopers photographed during the shoot on Jedi island. That means the first order is definitely going to find Luke’s hideout in the next one. Another wild detail about TFA, during the flashback sequence when the young Rey is left on Jakku and we see the ship flying away we hear a voice yell her name. It was confirmed yesterday that the voice you hear is none other than Ewen McGregor! That’s the voice of Obi-Wan! Think about what that might mean for a while folks!

  • Andrew Ray

Anybody that thinks that this is more than a weakass remake of the original is crazy. I’m assuming that you “fans” have seen the original? I’m glad Abrams is gone. I can do without his weak fan service. Thankfully a guy like Johnson will definitely move thing forward unlike Abrams

  • Andrew

***SPOILERS*** I don’t really have any evidence for this, but I think in Episode VIII they will do a reverse version of the Vader / Luke scene in Episode V, where Luke (playing the role of Vader) reveals to Kylo Ren that Vader actually killed the Emperor and redeemed himself before he died. And since Kylo worships his grandfather, Vader, that will force him to have a similar to reaction to the way Luke reacts when Vader reveals that he is his father. At least it seems like the sort of thing they would do.

  • RIconservative

I was hoping JJ was going to do all three. Oh well, the original trilogy had three directors as well and that turned out wonderfully.

  • The Commander

    its cousin,,I guess,,

  • Deana

Preach it brother! They’re complaining because they have nothing else to do apparently. How pathetic some people are. TFA was fucking fab, good job JJ Abrams.

  • Deana

Stop fucking commenting on all of the star wars threads! You’re pathetic! People loved it and it became the top-grossing film of all time! Just shut the hell up, and go back to your cave so that people can enjoy themselves.

  • Deana

The movie was great, can’t wait for ep 8. Thanks JJ and all cast and crew, and of course George Lucas. Because if it weren’t for him, there wouldn’t be shit!

  • armadillo

And Poe Dameron is going to the Dark Side. You don’t respond to “Because it’s the good thing to do” with “It’s because you need a pilot” (cynical, self-serving mentality = selfish sociopath = Dark Side)

  • armadillo

Poe Dameron’s slow conversion to the Dark Side (He’ll be the baddie of Episode IX) is the one to follow (His X-Men role is basicallt practice). Oscar Isaac’s performance was the best in this film.
