'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Shatters Records With $238 Million U.S. Debut & $517 Million Worldwide Gross!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is officially the biggest movie of the year with a massive $238 million debut!

According to THR, the seventh installment, starring Harrison Ford, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and more, brought in a massive $517 million worldwide!

It nabbed the biggest North American opening of all time and the No. 3 international haul of all time behind Jurassic World ($316 million) and the final Harry Potter film ($314 million).

Other records it broke included “the widest December release of all time (4,134 theaters), biggest Thursday-night previews ($57 million), biggest single day and biggest opening day ($120.5 million), first film to cross $100 million in a single day, fastest film to $100 million and $200 million, top theater average for a wide release ($57,568) and biggest Imax opening ($30.1 million).”

Coming in second was the animated flick Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, which pulled in a solid $14.4 million.

Taking the No. 3 spot was Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s new comedy Sisters, debuting to an impressive $13.4 million.

Rounding out the top five were The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and Michael B. Jordan‘s Creed, which earned $5.6 million and $5 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, the star-studded flick The Big Short, boasting a cast of Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Steve Carell, grossed an additional $350,000 from eight theaters for a location average of $43,750 and total of $1.3 million so far.
