Tom Hardy Writes Open Letter to Journalist Who Went Off On Him for Canceling Interview

The Revenant‘s Tom Hardy wrote an open letter to journalist Drew McWeeny, who went on a Twitter rant after the actor unexpectedly cancelled an interview.

“I’ll say it: Tom Hardy should stop doing junkets. He’s terrible at them, and he makes it impossible for anyone to do their jobs. F*ck him,” Drew tweeted in just one of his many tweets about Tom.

Well, Tom ended up reading Drew‘s rant.

“I apologise for any part of you having to wait for an interview and then not get one. The truth is we (as I was paired for all interviews that day) were unaware that ANYBODY was waiting. Or even went without a TV interview. Someone somewhere must have thought putting it on me was a lot easier than losing their journalist relations for the ongoing junkets and multiple movies that are pending. I wish I would have napped to be honest,” Tom began. “Resisting the urge to dare you to say what you ‘rant tweeted’ so publicly, to my face next time we meet, which I doubt you have the balls to do; I want to apologise regardless on behalf of those that misled the both of us. That isn’t cool. At all. Neither were your tweets. But that’s by the by.”

Tom Hardy’s Response

Dear Drew,

Thankyou for your email offering to retract your misdirected anger. I apologise for any part of you having to wait for an interview and then not get one. The truth is we (as I was paired for all interviews that day) were unaware that ANYBODY was waiting. Or even went without a TV interview. Someone somewhere must have thought putting it on me was a lot easier than losing their journalist relations for the ongoing junkets and multiple movies that are pending. I wish I would have napped to be honest.
One note to make is that per Fox, they said they “never actually told (you) that the interview was cancelled, simply that they were running behind schedule.” They also said that “Drew chose not to wait and left. Had he stayed, he would have gotten his interview as planned.”
Fuck.. Plot thickens … Who knows what to trust my friend, but I do know the cancellation was definitely not made by myself.
Resisting the urge to dare you to say what you “rant tweeted” so publicly, to my face next time we meet, which I doubt you have the balls to do; I want to apologise regardless on behalf of those that misled the both of us. That isn’t cool. At all. Neither were your tweets. But that’s by the by.

I appreciate your apology of sorts in your emails to and fro which I am happy to openly post. Also as I hope you understand now and which you’ve made very clear in our emails back and forth, your legitimate frustration lies with those who organised the junket; who fed you and I misinformation; not me.

Again apologies for the clusterfk. And it’s knock on effect to your personal life. I appreciate it is a busy time of year for you and your time shouldn’t have been wasted. I never had any intention of causing you any inconveniences at all.

Best regards and thanks for calling me an asshole a lot

TEAM TOM HARDY. He just ripped McWeeney a new one.

  • Casey C

wow, unprofessional much? he didn’t just have a go at Hardy, he had a go at the junket in general so for all he says he’d never interview Hardy again, the people that run that junket and the production company may well remember him so he’ll never get an interview on their movies again. what a dick. if you want to complain, fair enough, but do it properly, not just ranting on twitter. you can write a professional, polite letter about it, not this pathetic little attempt at geting attention and fame

  • suk bin

    hey Drew …. f*ck you ^^

  • GroundControl500

Good on you, Tom. Poor poor Drew he just needs a hug ;D

  • kellyisprettierthanyou

Go Tom! He socked it to him in all the right ways. He’s the man.

  • jonsie

Drew has tweeted that he has not exchanged emails with Hardy and doesn’t know his email address. So I guess it is up to Tom to publish the emails, or deny he wrote the letter. This is fun!

  • suk bin

“if you want to complain, fair enough, but do it properly, not just ranting on twitter.”

  • Mrs. Freeze

I knew there was a good reason to like Tom Hardy.

  • Dream Girl

    Mr. McWeeny,
    You owe Tom an apology.

  • Silly People

Good for Tom Hardy. Drew at Hit FX acted like an immature ass*hole. And Tom’s right- adults deal with their problems by discussing them like adults, not having “twitter” wars. Clearly Tom Hardy is too cool for Twitter. Pretty stupid move on the part of this Drew guy, considering he makes his living review films and interviewing actors.

  • Amber

Tom Hardy comes off as a bully. And, according to a lot of people he is a bully. Drew had every right to rant about Tom’s behavior and apparent lack of professionalism. We put these actors and musicians on pedestals and treat them like God’s, and in turn they live a life of privilege and expect nothing less than that at all times. If Tom’s obligation is to attend junkets and answer the same questions over and over and over for an entire day to promote a movie he was paid millions to do for a 2 month shoot, then do your fucking job! Stop bitching about the “media” and the “press” that YOU need in order to garner interest for your film, increase visibility, and land nominations.

Stop villianizing the (I’m sure) college educated journalist for airing his frustrations. He has every right to do so in a public forum about a public figure. Tom Hardy obviously cares about what is said about him, otherwise he would not have responded in such a manner. He should have cared enough to show up and do his job in the first place.

  • Gina

Tom Hardy doesn’t need to act like the typical barbaric male who basically threatens physical violence if someone says something he doesn’t like.

  • Tina Mallette

I heard a rumour that this “journo” was already being excluded from all the junkets of one of the other big studios. Guess he may not endear himself to everyone either.

On the other hand if this is indeed a letter from Hardy, and wouldn’t that be funny, the “social media” and the “journalists” jumping on round 2 of a story without verifying sources. Well it is only the entertainment news right. Not like real journalism. If it exists anymore.

On the other hand if this was Hardy’s response, I think Hardy should not have bothered answering this guy. That is what you pay good PR people for. Who must not have been working that junket.

Maybe McWeeney would like to man up and name names as to who shared all this truthiness about Hardy when apparently there is video after video from all the other journalists who got their interviews that day. Some really good interviews too McWeeney.

Because the way most junkets work, I hear or from what I have observed when you see raw footage on interviews sometimes, is the actors show up, the PR people bring the journalists in and out, you got your 5 – 10 minutes, but sometimes the actors get a decent interviewer and maybe they go past the allotted time assuming they got started on time in the first place. I imagine these junkets run late as a rule not the exception for a variety of reasons totally out of the control of the cast.

Gee I wonder if McWeeney always gets the last slot for some reason. Well he probably will now for sure. Oops.

  • Tina Mallette

If McWeeney has all or some of his “facts” wrong and Hardy did nothing wrong, one can understand why Hardy was annoyed.

If in fact this was a letter written by Hardy, NOT CONFIRMED OR ACKNOWLEDGED BY HARDY EVEN AS I TYPE THIS, unless I missed something, and yet McWeeny is already responding to it, which may just be indicative of his “fact finding” skills.

  • Amber

And what exactly is your point?

  • Tina Mallette

To put it very simply, a person claiming to be a real journalist, should not start ranting again before he makes sure the letter is from Hardy lest he make himself look like a bigger fool.

If it is confirmed as Hardy’s letter then I guess we’ll have round 3 of he said he said, who is telling the truth.

  • Amber

Your assertions all seem to be based on “if.” Again, what is your point?

  • Kaitlyn

HitFix would be smart to instruct all their journalists to stop using the company name in their personal Twitter handles.

  • lala

Is McWeeny his real last name? How did he make it through life with that?

Also I like how he implies his time is so much more important than just some actor. All the while saying Tom Hardy is a self important d*ck. Look in the mirror dude!

  • Revengefan0101

No, you’re wrong. Drew was unprofessional. All he had to do was speak with the publicist for the film.

  • VanityInsecurity

    Tom Hardy is the man.

  • toastie postie

Love Tom Hardy. Cool. Eager to see Legend.

  • toastie postie

    LOL!

  • toastie postie

    Got to agree with that.

  • toastie postie

His last name may be the problem. Must have been rough in his youth, for kids can be pretty mean. No doubt he may have been bullied and then turned around and acts like one in adulthood. Or I’m completely wrong. Still no excuse to act like that. As Revenge said, very unprofessional.

Drew works for a company called HitFix. If he worked at a doctor’s office and started ranting about one of the client’s he’d be fired immediately. It was unprofessional. Period.
