'Star Wars' Breaks New Year's Record With $88.3 Million, 'Hateful Eight' Expands to Strong Numbers
Star Wars: The Force Awakens just broke another record with a $88.3 million haul over the New Year’s weekend.
Quentin Tarantino‘s new flick The Hateful Eight expanded nationwide and earned an impressive $16.2 million for the weekend for a domestic total of $29.6 million.
Rounding out the top five were Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s new comedy Sisters, and the animated flick Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, which earned $15.6 million and $11.8 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, David O. Russell‘s Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, grossed $10.4 million from 2,924 theaters for a domestic total of $38.7 million.
Leonardo DiCaprio‘s The Revenant did well with $450,000 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a location average of $112,500
And finally, the Point Break remake earned $6.8 million from 2,910 screens for a domestic total of $22.4 million.
