Ricky Gervais Defends Caitlyn Jenner Joke at Golden Globes 2016 - Read the Tweets

Ricky Gervais is firing back at critics over his Caitlyn Jenner joke at the 2016 Golden Globes.

“I’m going to be nice tonight. I’ve changed – not as much as Bruce Jenner. Obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course,” Ricky said in his joke on Sunday evening. “What a year she’s had! She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers. But you can’t have everything, can ya? Not at the same time.”

When Ricky realized his joke sparked a lot of outrage, he tweeted, “Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist.”

I just read the joke now and it made me laugh.

  • Gina

The joke wasn’t transphobic at all.

  • leila

When are certain public figures off limits, nothing transphobic about the joke. If Caitlyn doesn’t want scrutiny then go away from the public spotlight, she wants the fame, awards and fat bank account that comes with her public persona. Can’t have it both ways. Fair target for any comic

  • Madsxx

People are so sensitive. Learn to laugh at yourself. In terms of “Caitlyn” being offended. The accident is not funny, and she should’ve paid for that. But Caitlyn is a Kardashian. She is now the butt of every joke. Transgender or not.

  • Kaitlyn

You know why the joke isn’t funny? Because someone died when Bruce Jenner was driving and putting on makeup. And then he got away with it because the courts and media feared accusations of “discrimination”.

These people defending Jenner need to remember that Ricky’s jokes are far less damaging than having your car pushed into oncoming traffic.

  • tinakelly

The joke is dark because someone died at the hands of Bruce…and whoever else was involved in that tragic accident. Someone dying certainly isn’t funny.

  • Ana Esteves

Ricky always goes too far. Same with Amy Schumer.

  • smooshy

OFFENDEDNESS…Guess what? Nobody cares that you are offended. I thought the joke was hilarious.

  • smooshy

No he doesn’t and he’s 100% funnier than Schumer.

  • plez

The joke should be offensive because two people died because of Bruce Jenner’s reckless driving and that is noting to laugh about. Not because Bruce changed to Caitlyn.

  • MimiB

So, in the minds of some, Caitlyn is immune from being the butt of jokes… not about sexual gender identification, but as what she did as a person? Nope… she isn’t.

  • Just Saying

You are looking way too hard into it. Chill.

Personally I took the joke as being a dig towards all of us women as a whole and our inability to drive. How acknowledging Caitlyn has changed is a transphobic joke, I don’t get it.

PS … I will say, I have heard some people try to joke and use Caitlyn in a degrading manner and those kinds of jokes are just pointless and disgusting. I believe in a world of being respectful towards others, but also a world where comedians can be funny even when it isn’t PC. But being angry that we live in a PC world where we can’t be racist or bigots anymore, that’s complete BS and people upset about that can take a flying leap.

  • USWeeklyHatesComments

What 2 people? And where do the other cars involved in this accident fair because it wasn’t 100% Jenner’s fault.

  • USWeeklyHatesComments

Putting on makeup. Really? That’s the argument you want to use to try to prove your point?

  • suzybel

I didn’t find the joke transphobic at all. Not sure why Bruce/Caitlin should be exempt from being the object of a joke. If he doesn’t like it, too bad. He’s made himself fair game.
