Zayn Malik Talks One Direction Exit for 'Luomo Vogue' Cover

Zayn Malik clenches a flower between his teeth on the new cover for the latest issue of Luomo Vogue.

Here’s what the 23-year-old former One Direction singer had to share with the mag:

On his former bandmates: “The truth is I haven’t spoken to any of the boys at all really, I spoke to Liam a bit and that’s just the way it is. I did try to reach out to a couple of people and they didn’t get back to me, but then publicly, when they were asked questions about it, said that they’d spoken to me and that we were friends. But that’s not the case, I tried to reach out and be their friend but they haven’t even replied to any of my calls or texts.”

On his solo career: “I just want this album to be about me and me standing on my own two feet. I’ve sung with four other voices for over four years now so I want to hear myself, alone for once.”

On why he left: “Now that I can really be myself and make music that feels honest to me, it doesn’t feel like work. It really is relaxing to me. When I decided to leave, it wasn’t a big build up, it had always been underlying. I never felt like I belonged in the group, I was just doing it because at the time, I felt like it was the right place for me to be.”

To me, Zayn is really good at biting the hand that feeds him (or used to). I wish him luck in the future, though. He has a beautiful voice.

  • Guestz

Those hands hurt him. He was right to leave that situation and be true to himself & to his art. If you only knew what he had to suffer and still has to suffer through because of the 1D brand. His ex-bandmates had no bearing on Zayn’s raw talent and vocal abilities. Zayn developed that on his own.

You are right about him having a beautiful voice though. I wish more people would recognize his beautiful and unique soul.

  • Guestz

This is a very artful and quirky cover. I can’t wait to buy this issue. He looks great.

I respect Zayn deeply and am anticipating more tidbits of honesty & insight coming from him.

  • plez

Maybe he should have talked to his bandmates before he left rather than whining that they are not calling him back after he had left. He is the one that did not handle the situation as an adult now he is crying that they aren’t acting right. Everything he is telling the press about why he left should have been what he told the “boys” face to face right before he left. He gave them no respect but continues to whine for it from them.

  • Guestz

Zayn has been writing songs since he was 16. He is a very good writer and a lot of people know this. He can compose and arrange music. You do not know what you are talking about at all. Syco and ex-bandmates made sure his talent was not properly displayed on 1D’s albums.

He is also an actual artist. He can paint, draw, and sculpt. Zayn can play the piano and guitar. He can act too.

A lot of people know this so your lies don’t matter.

  • Guestz

Zayn wouldn’t have left in the first place if he had been treated with respect.

Certain bandmates were being very malicious to him. They mistreated him and Zayn has been prevented from disclosing that for the time being due to management restrictions. The irony is that the opposite of what you are saying is true. Zayn was disrespected to such a vicious degree for a long period of time.

It is not okay for One Direction to throw shade at him, lie about the situation to place the blame on Zayn, and whine to make themselves appear like the victim. People are being hypocritical here.

Louis underhandedly tried to incite drama with twitter feuds knowing Zayn can’t disclose any personal drama. Zayn is only allowed to discuss it from the musical perspective right now. He is expressing a lot of restraint here. What Zayn has been saying in interviews is actually really tame. He has been forced to protect 1D’s images.

  • Aliyah

Zayn was in 1D. His voice powered one direction. He doesn’t owe them anything. If anything, 1d wronged him first by shading him and mocking him in interviews.

This is probably barely touching the surface too. We don’t know what he had to go through in the band itself.

  • Aliyah

He’s not whining. He’s telling us his side. He has the right to considering the fact that we’ve been hearing about 1D being “closer than ever without Zayn” and other shade. Why shouldn’t Zayn be allowed to say his piece?

  • Aliyah

Wow! Zayn has been on four magazine covers as an up and coming solo artist! Can you imagine what will happen when his album finally releases? Z016!!

SO PROUD OF HIM! He’s come such a long way and he deserves all the praise and recognition for his hard work.

    This is Zayn’s year.

I think at one live interview, 1D mentioned they reevaluate their band after Zayn left & this makes them closer. I never considered it’s a ‘shade’ because it just goes to show when bad things happen, the boys decided to make things better for themselves. I can almost hear it in their latest album ‘Made In AM’. Their songs are better and more matured.

I think both Zayn & 1D are in the right but are always misquoted. I hope both parties get back together as friends coz those 4 years of friendship are not worth losing.

If you wouldn’t mind, there is a website where you can share more regarding what he has been through because of the band. You do have to set up an account, but you can post anonymously. It’s called lipstick alley.

  • Guestz

Thanks for the heads up. I will see if more of the knowledgable Zquad can post there.

There needs to be more truth spread instead of negativity and misconceptions about Zayn.
