This Scene Almost Wasn't Ready in Time for the 'Star War' Premiere

It was just announced that the visual effects team for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is up for an Oscar but at one point the team didn’t think they’d be ready for the film’s premiere!

Star Wars visual effects artist Pat Tubach said that the team struggled with Rey’s flashback sequence and toyed with many ideas to make it dream-like.

As a vital scene that gives some important clues about Rey’s past, Pat said they had to work hard to bring director J.J. Abrams vision to life.

“That was really challenging, because it was so freeform, so we were exploring many different ideas and we presented many things to J.J. and he had a lot of very specific things he wanted to get in there…But I think the one thing that sort of gelled for us was when J.J. mentioned that it was OK to treat the sequence more like a stagecraft sort of thing, and I think that really freed, that sort of did something in my mind where I said, ‘OK, I get. He’s imagining that this dreamlike sequence has a theatrical quality to it,’” Pat explained.
