Jada Pinkett-Smith Is Boycotting the Oscars 2016 - Watch Her Announcement

Jada Pinkett-Smith has officially declared she will not be attending, nor watching, the 2016 Oscars due to the #OscarsSoWhite movement.

The 44-year-old actress announced the news in a video, posted to her Facebook page on Martin Luther King day.

“Is it time that people of color recognize how much power, influence, that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to be invited anywhere?” Jada said in the video. “Maybe it’s time that we recognize that if we love and respect and acknowledge ourselves in the way in which we are asking others to do, that that is the place of true power.”

Spike Lee also just announced that he will not be in attendance at the event.

Watch below…

We must stand in our power!

I notice a lot of these comments but no one is saying which black actor’s performance should have been nominated, certainly a movie about rappers who spew hatred on women and gays is not the best representation of the black community they have so much more to offer.

  • Drewski

Jada and Spike weren’t even invited so please you not showing up won’t matter LOL

  • Drewski

how many times will Oscars nominate a film about black slavery or racism? They awarded so many black actors for these roles meanwhile white actors do more diverse roles and get nominated. Easy to understand. Blame Hollywood casting and not the Oscars. Remake The Color Purple if you want an Oscar nomination lol

  • VanityInsecurity

    way to get blacklisted..

  • lshelton22

What they need is for white people/nominees to boycott with them. Won’t happen, though. People want to win Oscars. Jada is a crap actress, she knows she’ll likely never win an acting award, so she doesn’t care about pissing them off. Will on the other hand, I feel sorry for him because he is likely to be lumped in with his wife. As for Spike Lee, no1curr.

  • krtmom

Why should she be there anyway? Don’t think her OR Spike Lee will be terribly missed.

  • Barry

I’ve been distracted all along by the fact she does’nt know that lanscape is the way to film with his phone.

Unless that the view of her beautiful house would have been way more distracting, regarding rights and justice.

  • Silly People

She’s basically saying that her husband didn’t get nominated so she’s boycotting the show. Even though no one goes if they aren’t nominated.
I’ve seen Concussion and I really like Will Smith but his attempt at a Nigerian accent was pretty bad and the fact that his accent was all over the place distracted from the performance. Clearly I’m not the only who felt that way.

  • shoes4life

Maybe it’s time black film makers stand up and start creating more movie projects that are not just centered around comedy, the streets or racism. Film Producers/Directors like Antoine Fuqua & Tyler Perry seem to have respect within the industry circle, they can rally their other known Black Directors and Film Makers and demand that the studios fund them for better films. If not, then pool your funds together and create your own film studio and crank out films all people will want to see. Starring Black, White, Latina, Asian, and this way all can have an opportunity to be in a film. If they don’t get nominated for an Oscar due to great performances, writing, etc., then create a Oscar level worthy award ceremony that all will want to be a part of . See this is what Black people have to do. This is why we have/had BET (even though I don’t like the station, haven’t in years), Soul Train, Miss Black America Pageants, etc. When Whites would not allow Black to participate or barely participate in American Bandstand, MTV (early years), Miss America, etc. they created their own. It may be time to do the same in Hollywood.

  • jh7058622

To her credit she did not pinpoint a specific race but she does need to share who the actors are that are more deserving of the award.

  • jh7058622

Really terrible wording given the circumstance.

  • VanityInsecurity

the word is very appropriate & deserving.

  • Arx

I love all the white folks writing comments and proving their ignorance to sexism and racism.

  • LaCroix

I don’t understand why Black people need so much to be recognized by a white industry? You are putting down the very industry that has given you the luxury of a life you have.. I really don’t agree with putting down an entire Academy or industry because you aren’t being noticed enough.

  • LaCroix

that fantasy world of a place you are talking about will never be the powerhouse of the Academy that has been around since the beginning of the film industry.

  • Gina

There are many movies filled with trashy white charcaters that get nominated, so you complaining about the content in SOC is besides the point & hypocritical. Idris Elba was OUTSTANDING in Beasts of No Nation.

  • Gina

The problem is that it’s a “white industry.” Why can’t it just be simply an industry.

  • first and last post

of all the Black actors and directors out there, Will Smith, Jada Smith and Spike Lee are not at the top of the best list…they are neither distinguished actors nor is Lee an exceptional director…so stop with the race baiting and just get better at your craft. There are exceptional non Black actors and directors who are never nominated so just get over it…you get paid nicely, have a lavish lifestyle and want more??? do really want to get recognized just because of the color of your skin…try harder people and get more substance to your character as a human being and up the grade of your talent which is what these “awards” ceremonies are supposedly about…to honor those with talent and their performance, not the color of their skin. If the Academy members did not vote to your liking…toughen up. There are far more important issues out there like poverty, human trafficking, abuse of children et al even in this country that deserve more attention than griping about not being recognized at a silly awards show.
Jada Smith and Spike Lee et al, your shallowness is showing front and center. The Race Card is being overplayed and now everyone is numb to it.

  • kellyf

That’s because there weren’t many performances by minority actors this year that were considered contenders, but that seems to be an irrelevant fact to those who are upset. I think Idris Elba is the only person who is widely considered to be snubbed of a nomination, but there are worthy performances by actors of every race who are snubbed every year.

  • kellyf

Maybe those African Americans who are wildly influential in the film industry should stop making movies like Madea and Why Did I Get Married and make films that matter with roles that are worthy of awards recognition.

  • jh7058622

No I was being facetious I forgot the “lol” at the end.

  • Lou

Well Spike Lee was getting a Honorary Award so yeah he will be missed.

  • Lou

Spike Lee is getting a honorary award so the Academy Awards actually “curr”.

  • Ariana

None of the black performances this year stood out. That is a fact. Jada and Spike Lee are immature and stupid. How come they didn’t boycott the Oscars in the previous years when they only had white nomaniess? Which was probably most of the time?
Also, if they wanna boycott the Oscars, then I urge white actors to boycott the BET awards for lacking diversity for the very same reason.

  • Ariana

He already got it . They only show the clip at the Oscars.

  • Ariana

Notice how Will isn’t getting invloved? Jada is a piss poor actress and is an attention seeker.

  • Ariana

Unfortunately, something as ridiculous as this could involve the Oscars being shut down I feel.
I think we live in an era that is worse off then even 10 years ago. Everything has become about race and not hard work or talent.

  • Ariana

Your first line in your comment proves you are racist. What is trashy about Leonardo DiCaprio’s or Brie Larson’s or Eddie Redymanes performances?
Idris Elba acted in a TV movie. BONN is a Netflix movie and cannot be eligible for an Oscar. That is a fact.

  • xyz

Trying hard to keep herself relevant. Next please!

  • lshelton22

His ignorant ass should give it back then. He doesn’t deserve it anyway, not for the garbage productions he’s done. lol

  • Stolia

This actress was NEVER relevant enough to make an impact on anything besides her husband. Her body of work proves that. If she did at least one serious role in her career then maybe she can nag about not being recognized. But when you aren’t even considered in the running how can you think to be taken seriously? unreal.

  • goshdarling

I can understand her point, but let’s be real, she’s making noise now cuz Will wasn’t nominated. If he were, she’d be the last person to boycott.

  • Ariana

The problem with Irdis is that BONN is a Netflix movie. Netflix movies are not eligible for Oscars.
I think other then Irdis, the only person really snubbed for an award was Johnny Depp.

  • Ariana

I agree. If he wants to boycott the Oscars, then he should give back the Honorary Oscar he got in November. But I guess he is apart of those who campaign and fight hard for an Oscar. Hypocrite.

  • kellyf

Good point, I didn’t realize they were ineligible.

  • Ariana

I am positive that if Netflix movies were eligible, he would have been nominated. The Academy does not considered TV movies as major motion pictures. You can’t blame his snub on racism because its not.

  • Ariana

I do feel sad for the nominees because people like Jada and Spike Lee are in a way blaming them too. The Oscars are about good work and who was the best of the best. The 2011 Oscars had all white nominees and winners, how come Jada and Spike didn’t get upset back then? Or the 2008 Oscars? Or the many times where they had all white nominees and winners? Why get mad all of a sudden?
If Spike Lee wants to boycott the Oscars, maybe he should return the Honorary award he got back in November. If he is serious about it.

  • Ariana

She had a bit role in the Gotham series and left on her own for reasons. She is not a bankable or a good actress and she sure as hell isn’t the one fighting for good work.

  • Ariana

Johnny has always been grateful for his career and never once acted like a spoiled brat if he wasn’t nominated. Jada and Spike Lee ought to be ashamed of them selves for playing the race card. So many white actors in Hollywood are not earning big bucks or are all famous either.
I hate it when people use race and this causes tensions between people. We have that idiot Gina below us doing the same thing.

  • Ariana

Yes exactly. They can’t complain about the lack of diversity if they keep taking idiotic roles in Tyler Perry movies.

  • jane

we go through this every single year. yawn. get over it already. they want black actors nominated just for the sake of being nominated and not because they are actually stand-outs in the movie.

  • VanityInsecurity

Although I agree everything has become race related, I highly doubt that a few people not going to the Oscars will get it shut down. Its the most respect institutions in the movie industry its been around since 1929 & a has stood fast since then. no worries.

  • Ariana

Well that is true. I do feel ever since Obama came into the office, he has made things worse. He is another person who likes to make everything about race and its seeping into everything I feel.
If blacks want some diversity, then maybe they should stop taking roles in stupid movies like the Madea movies or Ride Along 2. How do you expect to get an Oscars for roles like that? There are man great roles for blacks but most of them do not take it or fight hard for it.

  • Ariana

And how is it the nominees fault if they are nomineted? I do believe some of them campaign really hard but others do not. Leo DiCaprio is an actor who should have won an Oscar years ago but you never hear him complain if he doesn’t win.
Why make someone feel bad for a reward they earned while you didn’t? This is a case of sour grapes and jealousy I feel.

  • Ariana

Yeah, like how come Jada and Spike Lee didn’t threaten to boycott the Oscars in 2011? When they also had all white nominees and winners? That was only 5 years ago.
Why doesn’t Jada speak out again this racism all the time? She is a hypocrite.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

She’s pissed Will didnt get a nom. She’s always had an entitlement attitude about herself, her husband and their kids. The fact is Will just isn’t a very good actor. He’s got charisma and he’s great with more comedic roles, but his Concussion movie looked unwatchable based on the trailer. Mainly it looks boring, but also his accent was terrible. Jada doesn’t give a crap about black people – only herself and her family.

  • Courtney Kennedy

these people need to sod off they are acting like petulant children some great actors were nominated in the past and never won or won for what was considered their weakest film nominated as atonement for previous losses. for instance when Paul Newman won Best Actor in a leading role for The Color Of Money in 1987 after losing six times previously he didn’t even show up to accept the award he sent director Robert Wise to accept it on his behalf

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

BONN is boring movie. I tried and I tried, and finally gave up in 30 mins. I wanted to like it. The subject matter is close to my heart. But every Fukunaga movie is like this. They look beautiful but are terrible boring. His Jane Eyre movie was unwatchable even with Fassbender and Judi Dench in it. It was terrible, another one I had to shut off. How can voters even know if Elba did a great job when it’s unwatchable? As an aside, I’m hoping the Academy will pull the rug out from under DiCaprio and give the award to someone older and less thirsty like Cranston.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

Bc Will didn’t get nommed. Jada doesnt GAF about anyone else.
