Will Smith's 'Fresh Prince' Co-Star Janet Hubert Slams Jada Pinkett-Smith's Oscars Boycott (Video)

Janet Hubert, who played Will Smith‘s Aunt Vivian on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is slamming Jada Pinkett-Smith for her 2016 Oscars boycott.

The 60-year-old actress uploaded a video to YouTube where she shared her sentiments. Warning: this video contains NSFW language.

“I’ve been trying to figure out: Do I really want to do this? Yeah, I do. Today, being the celebration of Martin Luther King’s birthday and hitting 60 years old…I want to say something to Jada Pinkett Smith asking other black actors to boycott the Oscars. First of all, Miss Thing: Does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak?” Janet said.

“The second thing, girlfriend, there’s a lot of s— going on in the world that you all don’t seem to recognize. People are dying. Our boys are being shot left and right. People are hungry. People are starving. People are trying to pay bills,” the actress continued. “And you’re talking about some motherf—ing actors and Oscars. It just ain’t that deep,” she continued.

“Here’s the other thing, for you to ask other actors to jeopardize their careers…You know damn well, you don’t do that,” Janet added in her rant. “They don’t care! I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living and made millions and millions of dollars from the very people [who are doing this]…That is not the way life works, baby. It’s very suspect to me.”

I think Janet is wrong to do this video. It causes division and this is an example why we as “Black” people will never be able to overcome and build anything Oscar level together. If she didn’t agree with what Jada said she could’ve came out with a solution to work together with others to create a way for future minorities in HW. Instead she comes out with insults and old blood from 20+ years ago! She should be a solution not a problem. This makes me sad that she says all this after starting her video by mentioning Dr. King. He would be sad too after watching her video.

  • Visitor

I agree with her (though she’s bitter and blames Will for getting her fired from The Fresh Prince).

Jada is entitled, and these Black actors who work in Hollywood are biting the hands that feed them.

  • ImOpining

So it’s okay for Jada and them to rant and rave about the oscars but not okay for her to give her opinion on them doing so?

She didnt just give her opiniion. No one would wish to box her in her stupid face for just giving her opinion with the same level of class as Jada. But coming out with her abusive bitter rant, asking Jada if her man doesnt have a mouth, as if Jada cant state her beef with HW without Will’s approval. I mean srsly, this old fart needs to take her bitter asss and go back where we werent hearing about her.

  • VanityInsecurity

Even though she might be bitter, and rightfully so after the way Smith treated her.. she has very valid points. She’s basically saying where were you Smith when we needed to stick together as a group of (black) people/actors .. now you want to seem that you need to bond over the Oscars?

She’s absolutely right, The Smiths seem to want to bring black people together on this issue only because it directly affects them. So is this whole boycotting thing really coming from a genuine place? She questions why Will isn’t coming forth.. I believe its because he has the better career & Jada doesn’t.

  • LaCroix

    damn so spot on!

  • plez

She’s very bitter but she had some good points.
Yep the actions of Jada, Will and even Spike after the Oscars will show us whether Janet was more right than wrong in her video.

  • LaCroix

this just goes to show how people only hear what they want to.

  • Arrow 12

Unfortunately no one will care what she said because she isn’t an A list actor.

  • Delores Pauldo

She has the right to say what she want so does jada Smith. This getting out are control about this Oscar thing. But Hayden christensen never get norminated for anything and no one bother to say anything about that or how other movies get left out. Gave this a rest already.

  • Wendy

She’s exactly right. We all know Jada’s mouth would be shut if Will was nominated. She doesn’t care that it’s white-washed, she cares that her husband wasn’t nominated, and that’s it.

  • Ariana

I agree with her 100%. I think she is spot on and loved how she brought up that Will Smith back then only ever cared about himself. Now I can see why he married someone as selfish as Jada.

  • Weeping Mary

I agree!!! We are so quick to tear each other down in public, but then want to talk about how the “other” race is trying to destroy us. Trust me, I have no problem with Janet “Miss Girlfriend’s” opinion. I’m just saying there could have been a better way to handle it. We are so quick to air our dirty laundry and then wonder how the enemy came in, divided and conquered. Because we keep giving them ammunition. So, yes Janet should feel the right to give her feelings but the way she’s doing is not helping the bigger picture of the very thing that she’s speaking about.

  • Weeping Mary

The difference is, Jada is addressing an institution that affects many. Janet is singling Jada out. Apples and oranges. I’m not saying Jada is right or wrong because there are many factors to look at and how her opinions can affect her career, her husband’s career and her kids’ future in this business, but then again, if you stand for nothing you’ll fall for anything and maybe that’s how Jada feels. So there’s a few ways to look at this where Jada is concerned. But, Janet honestly looks like a bitter and desperate for attention woman by coming from this angle. There was a better way to handle it. Because in the end, who’s opinion in Hollywood and in the streets is going to really matter…Jada’s or Aunt Viv’s? We both already know the answer to that and it ain’t Aunt Viv’s.

  • Weeping Mary

Exactly!!! Bye Aunt Viv. She’s definitely entitled to her opinion…there was just a better way to handle it in my opinion.

  • Weeping Mary

Very true…as we have seen time and time again…I don’t care how powerful you think you are and how much influence you think you have, if you’re Black and you get too big for your britches whether you intend to or not, they will show you just how hard they can knock you down…just ask Michael Jackson and Bill Cosby. All I say is, Janet’s video is not helping but only making us look more divided through her attitude and words. Definitely a better way to handle her opinion.

  • Weeping Mary

Personally, I couldn’t care less about JPS or Janet Hubbard’s rants. I just want to know why we keep trying to get validation from an academy that never truly valued Black actors in the first place. As if to say, we don’t matter unless we can just get that nomination. F*ck that!!! We’ve had great actors and actresses of color throughout history but how many times have we’ve actually been nominated let alone have won. We’ve had 2 Black male actors win for a lead role and 2 Black female actors win for a lead role. Of the 4, only one was for a role of dignity and that was Sidney Poitier for ‘Lilies of the Field”. Denzel for allll the great roles he played, he finally won for being a thug cop. I’m more proud of his supporting award for Glory than his lead award for Training Day. Halle won for stripping naked and becoming a sex object for a white man (how plantation like). And Mo’Nique won for playing a ghetto abusive mother. Yes, that’s what Hollywood sees when they look at us and that’s what we want to aspire to? Do we make this much fuss about the NAACP Image Awards? We come from the greats of Cicely Tyson, Ruby Dee, Dorothy Dandridge, Paul Robeson, Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones, Sidney Poitier, and so many others. No award could define their greatness and they didn’t need it to feel validated. So if Jada (and Will) feels she needs to go this route just to make sure we count, I would encourage her to dig deeper and for Janet, I’d just say, get over it and stop looking for a way to look relevant because whether she has good points or not, she’s only coming across as bitter and divisive. We gotta stop these centuries old mentality of wanting to be accepted and be the true innovators that our ancestors were.
