Zac Efron Apologizes For Controversial MLK Day Tweet

Zac Efron has apologized for a controversial tweet he posted on Martin Luther King Day.

The 28-year-old actor was criticized for writing in the now deleted tweet, “I’m grateful for a couple things today. Martin Luther King Jr & 10 million followers on IG.”

Zac took to Twitter the next day to apologize for his comments.

“I have nothing but the greatest admiration and respect for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” he wrote. “I realize that last night’s post was completely insensitive and I apologize to anyone who I may have offended. So sorry.”

    Hope who whoever tweeted it for him learned there lesson

  • Kaitlyn

    Id like an explanation on why its offensive.

  • Maria

    Because he made it all about himself and talked aout the number of followers he now has. Insensitive and tacky.

  • DPG

    …..their

  • IMO

    Because he is comparing his importance of reaching 10 million followers to the importance of MLK Plus the fact he is a white man of privilege that used the emoticons of a Black man’s thumbs up and a fist that reflects militant beliefs ,where King was a man of peace.

    this highly educated black woman did not find the tweet offensive at all…

    most of the people who actually called it offensive are the exact same people who were upset that he would even pay homage to any black person via his social media…they used this situation out of frustrations that they think that they have with his girlfriend…

    He didn’t say anything offensive. People are just trying to make a mountain out of an ant hill. He’s grateful for MLK as we all should be. But he’s also grateful for his 10 million followers on IG … which I wish I had but don’t.

    @lauren
    if zac’s tweet was like:

    “i’m thankful for two things mlk, jr. and my 10 mill followers on social media…now let’s go get high”

    That would be inappropriate…he was paying homage to his fans and mlk, jr.

    again, you don’t like any of his (what you call) “black power” posts and you constantly accuse him of wanting to be black, so why did you of all people find fault in that tweet?

    do you really find fault in it that tweet? no, because all of your comments to people who don’t understand what the big deal is are focused on his girlfriend, sami…you are over-working yourself in trying to rally this team against sami and zac for no reason…

  • names4u

    @jj
    for him to pay homage to mlk, jr and his followers in the same sentence shows that he was grateful…as a black woman, i just don’t get it…

  • names4u

    @lauren,
    but you are always upset when he post anything relating to black people or the black culture and now you are offended that he did not do it correctly according to your standards?

    he paid homage to two different causes that were important to him…

    most of the commenters are as confused as i am…it is just you and the 7 other regulars who find fault in the tweet…so it has come to my understanding that it is not about the tweet, but it is about who is being accused of posting the tweet, and that is sami…so it is all good;)

  • Gina

    I wasn’t offended until I found out about the emoticon portion of his tweet.

  • MollyBD

    I don’t think he tweeted that comment. It didn’t sound like him. My bet is that his GF did it, and he wasn’t aware of it till after.

  • names4u

    @lauren,
    i am quite sure that i never mentioned that it was because of her race…also, i can’t make anybody seem racist, racist people reveal themselves without my help…

  • names4u

    @lauren
    i will say whatever i want…annoyance doesn’t bother me…

  • names4u

    @lauren,
    when did i specifically say that, “lauren said….”?

  • names4u

    @lauren
    you mention race whenever you have an issue with his so-called, “black power” tweets…so therefore, you mention race, NOT me!

  • names4u

    @lauren,
    well i don’t need to bring up race when i think the fact that you don’t like her is just amiss, then i am not thinking race because she can breathe and it will get the angry crew upset…like i said previously, you bring up race, especially when you are frustrated at pics or posts involving the two of them…

    Zac’s a good guy , but I really think his GF did that . Can’t prove it but at the same time he is to blame ( so it’s his responsibility) for letting her handle his Social. She is a woman of color so she is the one who also did the emoticons which were offensive even for her . He needs to hire someone to take of of things like this and to guide him to make better decisions.
    this was a huge PR mistake and right before a movie opening. He is well liked so I’m sure all will be forgiven.

    @lauren
    “…..put words in my mouth”?
    this is why (among other reasons) i have been refraining from commenting on this site…who’s putting words in your mouth? i am quite sure that i have never accused you of saying something that you really did not say…you are nobody to be lying to or lying on…

  • Maria

    People DID find it offensive, and THAT is why he apologized. Just because it didn’t offend you, doesn’t mean it wasn’t.

  • DavidL

    I’m sorry but am I the only who fails to see how that tweet was offensive to MLK?
