Will Smith Boycotted the 1989 Grammys Because of Diversity Issues

Will Smith beams at the premiere of his movie Concussion on Wednesday (January 27) at the Callao Cinema in Madrid, Spain.

The 47-year-old actor and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are boycotting the 2016 Oscars due to a lack of diversity, and a video recently pulled from the ET archives shows it isn’t Will’s first boycott.

Will boycotted the 1989 Grammys along with his musical partner DJ Jazzy Jeff because the rap categories weren’t being televised.

“We don’t have the problem with the Grammy as an award or the Grammys as an institution, we just had a problem with the 1989 design of the awards show,” Will told ET at the time. “We chose to boycott. We feel that it’s a slap in the face.”

    Simpler he’s also been a whinny bi*ch .

Who should have boycotted is other rappers that Will Smith was even nominated for best rap best album.

As the dud did sh*t, they televise the 4 major awards and a bunch acts anyways.

  • Kaitlyn

Looking at his discography and album sales then he did have an album in 89 but it wasn’t rated very highly. So I wonder if this “boycott” was actually more proof that “By nomination or by boycott, I’ll force my way into that spotlight”.

Maybe rappers should go back to actually making music, like soul and funk. Rap isn’t music, but it got shoved down our throats because we had to be diverse. Skin color has no bearing on music.

  • http://www.johnnycompton.com Johnny

He was nominated that year. That was the whole point of the boycott.

  • mahalo1990

Hahahaha 1989 Grammys was not diverse…. two out of the four damn nominees for best albums of the year were Black!
Album Of The Year: Tracy Chapman and Bobby McFerrin.
Best Album Package: The Valentine Brothers
    Best Comedy Recording: Whoopi Goldberg.
Best Contemporary Blues Recording:Robert Cray Ban, Bobby Bland. Best Contemporary Folk Recording: Tracy Chapman, Sweet Honey in the Rock.
Best Gospel Performance – Duo, Group, Choir Or Chorus: Winans – The Winans Live at Carnegie Ha, BeBe & CeCe Winans – Silent Night, Holy Night.
Best Gospel Performance – Male: Larnelle Harris – ChristmasBest Gospel Performance – Female:Deniece Williams, Delores WinansBest Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(S): Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr.
Best Jazz Instrumental Performance – Big Band: Illinois Jacquet & His Big Band – Jacquet’s Got It!, Gene Harris All-Star Big Band – Tribute to Count Basie
Best Jazz Instrumental Performance – Soloist: Miles Davis, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis
Best Rap Performance: ALL four nominee groups black.
Best Reggae Recording: ALL five nominee groups black.
Best Rhythm & Blues Instrumental Performance: ALL six nominee groups black.

There are tons more and this is only half the list!!!! Smith is full of it – are there Blacks in every category and did they win each time they were nominated? No and they should not! If the talent is not there then the nomination should not be either regardless of anyone’s race. And some categories there is not a prevalence of every race in the music genre! That is b/c the interest of some races (white, black, Asian, Mexican) is not as strong in every music genre so there is going to be limited representation… as their should be! But to say it was not diverse is a bold face lie (there is a lack of hispanic/latino and asian nominees….but certainly not black)…. unless Smith is stating all the above mentioned are not Black…. some how i do not think any of them would agree with him! And he is not b!tching about any group but blacks – he could not give a hoot for another races that have small representation!
