Zayn Malik Says He 'Never Really Wanted' to Be in One Direction - Watch Now

Zayn Malik is opening up about leaving One Direction in his first solo broadcast interview on Beats 1 airing on Thursday (January 28).

The 23-year-old singer spoke to host Zane Lowe about how soon he realized being in the group didn’t feel right to him.

“I think I always kind of wanted to go, from the first year, really,” Zayn said. “I never really wanted to be there in the band, I just gave it a go because it was there at the time.”

Zayn added, “I think the boys kind of knew — in terms of the music — that wasn’t my cup of tea… They obviously didn’t want me to leave, but they couldn’t talk me out of it at that point. I’d already made my mind up.”

Just from that alone, he seems like he’s in a much better head space than he was when he was in the band. He hardly spoke in interviews before and always looked miserable.

  • http://www.panicatthediscoblog.obolog.com lpcristhy

If He didn’t want to be in the band from the start he should have said it, he stole the opportunity to other guy to be in the band… Iam sure that someone else would love to be part of 1D….
    He is selfish….

  • http://www.panicatthediscoblog.obolog.com lpcristhy

he just used 1D to be famous… that’s unfair.

  • devvv

By that logic Beyonce used Destiny’s Child, MJ used the Jackson 5, Justin Timberlake used NSync, and Victoria Beckham used the Spice Girls. He spent five years of his life in a job that he didn’t like making other people happy. He’s not selfish, he’s a human. He also had a HUGE role in the bands success. They would not have reached the level they reached without him.

  • http://www.panicatthediscoblog.obolog.com lpcristhy

No… Ive never heard that beyonce said that she “Never wanted to be in Destiny’s child” i don’t think any of them said so… But Zyan is almost saying he was forced to stay in 1D… which is totally different

  • http://www.panicatthediscoblog.obolog.com lpcristhy

I mean, ok he made a mistake joinning a band he didn’t want to be in… but why wait 5 years to leave?

He had a 5 year contract, during which he had practically no break from touring or recording to be at home. The fact is, people get way too involved in celebrities lives to the point where they feel like the star owes them something. He doesn’t owe anyone an explanation or a reason why he did what he did. He chose himself and he chose to be happy. He stayed for 5 years and 4 albums and then he left because he was unhappy and because he wanted to. That’s it.

    exactly
    selfish and ungrateful

  • Eathan Crane

Poor little millionaire. He left when his bank accounts were filled with millions. Now he’s spitting in people’s faces. Maybe he should also return those millions? When his solo career flops, he’ll be the first one to jump on a One Direction reunion.

  • http://notly.ru/ Mapгapитa Бaбoвниковa

He still had that contract when he leave.

  • Guestz

There were contractual restrictions. Zayn was able to use a certain clause at the right time especially since Simon initially wanted to sign him as a solo artist.

Zayn tried his best to remain in the band for a long time. Again, people are assuming the worst when Zayn was put through a lot of hell behind the scenes.

Zayn tried his best to put up with the circumstances and people are still giving him heat for leaving.

  • Guestz

Beyonce and Zayn are not the same person. Their experiences within their respective bands weren’t the same. Beyonce had more creative freedom than Zayn did when she was with Destiny’s Child. She also had a real friendship with Kelly and Michelle.

Yeah, he was forced to stay because there were contracts in place. People honestly have no idea what they are talking about and just want to degrade Zayn.

  • Guestz

That is hilarious. 1D’s team built an entire narrative exploiting Zayn’s exit. Zayn was the vocal powerhouse in that band. Niall and Louis aren’t even proficient singers but they have gotten by on the talent of the other members as well as autotune.

Zayn was used and abused in many ways but people are still lashing out at him when they are only receiving 1% of the story.

Any person out there who is struggling in the entertainment industry ( which is a tough business to be successful in) would be intelligent enough to use the opportunities provided to them. Zayn auditioned to be on X Factor to pursue his dreams of music and so he chose to be in a band because that was what available to him at the time. Zayn would also do anything to help provide for his family.

No, it is unfair for people to bash him and blame him for everything. He was the real victim. If only people knew…

  • Guestz

He didn’t start out as a millionaire. He was underprivileged growing up.

So I guess it is okay for his rivals and 1D’s team to circulate bs articles making him out be the villain falsely but Zayn can’t comment on them at all?

Zayn earned those millions from his singing talent and hard work he put into that band. He tried his best to remain loyal to people who weren’t kind or loyal to him. He had every right to leave.

His haters wil have egg on their faces when he succeeds. The fact is that Zayn will get to be involved in writing good music and putting out quality songs into the world. Zayn getting to do what he loves and sharing it, would suffice enough.

  • Guestz

Zayn is brave, kind, and honest. He is not obligated to be grateful to his victimizers. People are wrongly lashing out at him for daring to say anything against the wrongly idolized 1D when they don’t know the whole story.

If there weren’t NDA’s currently in place and etc, there would be more unpleasant truth revealed. Zayn is basically protecting them and dishing out the version the managements want to, to protect the image of 1D, yet people are still bizarrely attacking him for the vague & tame comments.

Zayn couldn’t have predicted what the entire experience with 1D would be like back when he was only 17 years old.

  • Aliyah

Will you say the same when Harry and Liam leave the band? Because the split is inevitable. Zayn had it the hardest because he had to face racist comments everyday. He stayed in the band for the fans and even they could see his health deteriorating. Money has nothing to do with it. He split to make music that suits him. He could have continued the OTRA tour and earned money but he didn’t. He put his happiness first and his true fans will be with him all the way. Zayn doesn’t owe anyone anything. His solo career will be successful and haters will be eating their words. Tomorrow will be a bad day for haters.

  • aj

He hasn’t spit in anybody’s faces. Nor should Zayn censor himself given that his former bandmates and their management/PR team keep using his name for relevance while creating a false impression of what happened.

Zayn had the right to earn those millions while he was in the band like 1D did. Zayn didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth. He struggled through so much and didn’t want to be destroyed.

Zayn endured through enough. He will be an amazing solo artist.

  • Aliyah

He wasn’t even an adult. If you were in his place, you would have done the same thing. Plans change and we grow up. Zayn realized that 1D’s music wasn’t right for him. Let’s not forget all five of them auditioned as solo acts.

  • Aliyah

How is he ungrateful? For leaving the band? His true fans knew that he was into RnB. Zayn doesn’t owe anyone anything. Zayn continues to show appreciation for his real fans. He’s not selfish for creating music that means something to him.

  • aj

I think he sounds adorable but nervous.

  • aj

Thank you. Zayn has expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the people who have been there for him.

Zayn is intelligent and courageous for standing up for himself. He had every right to take charge of his life and do what is best for him.

  • Aliyah

All of them auditioned as solo acts. Zayn was the one that got abused in the band. Racist comments even forced him to deactivate his twitter for a time. He was a teen. He wanted to make music. Zayn doesn’t owe anyone anything. He left to create music that would reflect himself. If he were really using 1D, we would be hearing a totally different narrative. Zayn has said nothing that wasn’t honest, but he said it in a way that was neutral.

  • aj

Nobody in Destiny’s Child or Nsync exploited Beyonce or JT when they went solo. There were was no PR mess due to bandmates being subversively antagonistic or management teams being calculating at their expense.

They were allowed to ride free.

There have been many instances where bandmates have later spoken out about the difficulties they face. Do research on a lot of classic rock bands.

  • Aliyah

I can’t wait to hear his music. Friday will be a terrible day for Zayn haters. I hope he’s in a better place now and he’s making music that reflects himself. So proud of him.

  • aj

It was unfair how Zayn was betrayed and hurt while he was in the band. He is prevented from exposing what he truly had to go through. All he has done is make commentary about the music and about corporate restrictions. He has hardly said anything.

What appeared like a great situation to be in back when he was teenager played out differently for him.

  • Behemoth

It’s possibile to promote your solo career without badmouthing what made you famous.
Let’s hope he doesn’t succumbs to the drugs he’s clearly using.

  • aj

This is so nasty and out of line. I guess you won’t apply those attacks to Louis, Liam, and the rest of them? The other 1D lads have been caught on camera using drugs as well as drinking a lot.

People have every right to speak out about their situation. Zayn has been bombarded with a slew of negativity that 1D’s team has perpetrated at his expense.

He was the victim but the biased media and 1D’s team have been making him look like the villain.

People don’t leave bands like that if they are happy or treated well.

1D promoted their music throughout 2015 using Zayn’s name quite frequently. Not all of them have been polite about it either.

  • aj

I am deeply proud of Zayn.

  • Behemoth

Were the racist comments coming from his bandmates or the managers?!

  • aj

You don’t remember the “exclusives” provided to Blind Gossip and other sites where they made racist accusations?

You don’t remember Louis using the N word in a video and referring to Zayn in it while Zayn took the heat for that video?

A lot of directioners were hurling racist tweets at Zayn and Naughtyboy. Louis even began a twitter fight egging that hatred on as well as fave tweets that were derogatory towards Zayn while following anti-Zayn people on twitter.

Then Liam and Louis pounced on a monkey pinata of Naughtyboy which has racist symbolic overtones.

You are making a lot of presumptions for somebody who has no info about the situation. There is so much more Zayn could say about these people but he isn’t right now.

He was the only POC in a band with shady people.

  • Behemoth

I will happily apply those “attacks” to the whole lot of them. I don’t doubt that they all use drugs sometimes, but both Zayn’s and Louis’ addiction carry the signs of addiction on their faces for anyone to see, and if they don’t face their situation will likely join the 27 club. I hope they won’t, as I don’t wish any man to die young.

  • Behemoth

I asked a question because I didn’t know. If he was experiencing racism in his place of work he had the right to leave indeed.

  • Guestz

Zayn can’t and will not say a lot of things currently. He had to suffer through a lot of abuse and prejudice. They even marketed him as the bad boy of the band and staged cheating scandals to get 1D & Little Mix publicity.

I try to stay low key but I am aware of kind of racist remarks were made bts. Zayn is being incredibly restrained here. He was bullied and manipulated a lot by certain people.

There are people associated with 1D who are not good, that is all I can say.

  • http://www.panicatthediscoblog.obolog.com lpcristhy

Ok He was Young and he made a mistake, but why wait too long to leave the band? He clearly said He NEVER wanted to be in 1D so… I don’t think it was only because he was confused he knew that being there helped him to be known thats why he didn’t want to leave the band.

  • http://www.panicatthediscoblog.obolog.com lpcristhy

You are just trying to defend Him because I know you care about him… but let’s be honest He Never wanted to be in 1D I know it’s hurting but other guy would have appreciated more to be in in the band… He clearily said that his band mates didn’t want he leaves not because of the contract… maybe he felt pressure because of that… but if his heart wans’t 100% with them, he should have leave and not pretend.. He lied to his fans…

  • http://www.panicatthediscoblog.obolog.com lpcristhy

If he was going to sign as a solo artist why he joinned 1D??
Now he is saying he NEVER wanted to be there that’s really weird…

  • Guestz

You are not familiar with the logistics of X Factor at all. So spare me with your insinuations.

Every single one of them auditioned as a solo artist on X Factor but agreed to be part of the group or they would have lost that opportunity to break into the music industry immediately. Zayn was in a disadvantaged position at the time.

  • Guestz

I am defending him because he is being wrongly maligned from people who don’t understand the truth. All of the guys auditioned to be solo artists on X Factor, not just him. You are assuming all of their experiences were the same but they were not.

He didn’t lie to anybody. It was widely known that there was 5 year contract with Modest as well as a whole lot of other issues. He went through a lot of hell throughout that time period while he was in 1D. I doubt he anticipated that at all. What are you talking about? You don’t know about specific events that happened behind the scenes and are blindly accepting official narrative. He was forced to pretend and a lot of truth is being prevented from being disclosed.

  • Guestz

All of them signed on to the X Factor and audtioned as solo artists. What are you talking about?

  • Gina

He’s not asking anyone to feel sorry for him, he simply outgrew a band he was in since he was a teenager. ALL of the boys made money & all of the boys have grown up. Money doesn’t equal happiness or fulfillment. He is not obligated to stay in band he wasn’t happy in. He has every right to make the music he wants to make. Period. He never said a bad word about the boys, just the music. I doubt very much that all the boys are completely happy with the music they were making. People are just bitter that Zayn is the one who left first. Remember, ALL of the boys auditioned as solo artist before being put into a group. How long did you think it was gonna last?

  • Gina

Super nervous. I can practically see his heart beating out of his chest, poor thing. I wish him the best.

  • Gina

What made him famous became tainted by a greedy management team who overworked him, tried to erase is race & religion, and creatively stifled him in favor of the almighty dollar. What started out as fun quickly became a nightmare. And what proof do you have that he’s on hard drugs? GTFOH.

  • Gina

The other boys became like his brothers. He stayed largely out of loyalty to them.

  • Cass

TOO MANY BITTER 1D STANS ARE FORGETTING THEIR DANG HISTORY. THESE GUYS ALL ONLY WANTED TO BE SOLOISTS. THEY AUDITIONED SEPARATELY. OF FREAKING COURSE THEY’LL SIGN A CONTRACT TO BE IN A BAND- IT MEANS A SHOT AT /SOMETHING/ RATHER THAN LEAVING THE COMPETITION EMPTY HANDED. IT ONLY MAKES SENSE AND WITH THE WAY BANDS ARE IN THIS INDUSTRY, IT’S OBVIOUS THAT IT’S A GREAT STEPPING STONE TO GET SOME EXPERIENCE UNDER YOUR BELT TO ULTIMATELY BE A POTENTIAL SOLO ARTIST.
Just look at the other guys who can sing in 1d (Harry and Liam) they also want to go solo *!wow shocker!* Did ppl expect them to be truly satisfied with something they never even wanted to begin with? Zayn did it for as long as he could- I should say went along with it for as long as he could. Bc honestly the 1D machine was disgusting and damaging to all involved (not just zayn). Zayn decided to finally take control over his own life (for the most part) and pursue his true dreams! Wouldn’t you want that for anyone?
I applaud his honesty, bc ppl easily see through the lies.

  • Cass

They also marketed Zayn in a different way from the others, it came out in the sony leaks from last year! It was ridiculous! That’s also why many ppl are surprised by these interviews and the first couple interviews after he left ,saying “he’s changed” and what not. But in reality the way they saw him, if they never really paid much attn to him, was the way he was marketed. Crazy stuff, yet not surprising when it comes to the industry
