Will Smith Says He's 'Very Pleased At How Quickly The Academy Responded' To Diversity Issue

Will Smith is dapper in a suit while hitting the red carpet at the special screening of Concussion held at the Ham Yard Hotel on Thursday (January 28) in London, England.

The following morning, the 47-year-old actor switched into something more casual to visit the BBC Radio 2 studios in support of the flick.

Will and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are boycotting the 2016 Oscars due to a lack of diversity, and he recently opened up about being quite pleased with the Academy’s response.

“I was very pleased at how quickly and aggressively the Academy responded,” Will told the BBC. “I want to be very clear about the spirit of what I’m saying. This is far beyond me. This has nothing to do with me. This has nothing to do with awards. That’s a really frivolous reason for me to put my hand up and make a statement. For me this is much more about the idea of diversity and inclusion.”

“I think that it’s not us and them—it’s we,” Will concluded. “I’m a member of the Academy, so it’s much more a domestic family issue than it is a civil rights issue, so it’s a problem we all have to solve.”

Oh please. Where was his concern LAST year when it first started? This is all about him and his failure to get nominated for that crap performance. It was totally personal. The joke’s on him though. AMPAS will never nominate him for anything now.

PLEASE shut up already Will Smith!

  • Makis

Weird how we hardly hear about the nominees this year. The only thing taking all the attention in the media is this oscarssowhite, a title that I find offensive by the way.

am I the only one who doesn’t care what the academy does or says?

  • Lillian Eversole

Him and his untalented wife will be lucky to get cast into anything any more. Hollywood hates troublemakers. Besides, they are both has beens

Am I the only one who thinks that the Academy’s response was too quick? perhaps the President & some actors planned this all along.. And if that is what they felt all along why wasn’t changes made last year or the year before? I just don’t buy or believe any of these people. Why only after a handful of actors complain did they decide to make the changes? all of this seems just too suspicious imo.

I thought you had to EARN an award. It is pathetic he and those whining when they have won in the past they did not pull this crap. And also, where is the diversity “issue” regarding the BET channel? Tyler Perry’s movies and others like his ? All black? Nothing is said nor done when those are on. It is really sad that some people play the race card because they feel left out, instead of looking at what they themselves are doing. Acting is a craft that has to be fine tuned….and WS and the others feel that they should be given in to every time and this is wrong. 8 out of 10 are over rated in Hollyweird. Look to the old movies where there was acting and then maybe, just maybe the whining will stop. I watch more of the oldies than the newer ones because the acting is better…..Will Smith for example is to conceited and arrogant…and not as good as an actor he seems to think he is. Same with his wife. The good ones you do not see whining…because they don’t have to. They know who they are and that is all that matters. It is not the skin color that wins the award, but the character, determination and drive that shows in the acting that does.

Pleased or trying to save face? He offended a lot of people. Even fellow co workers and directors he has worked with. Don’t offend the nominees and directors by saying they only were nominated due to skin color. I doubt any director will want to hire him now. Why spend millions making a movie when Will his barking dog Jada will give bad press? Can’t backtrack now. Don’t worry the awards will go on and someone with talent and grace will win.

I think a big part of the problem is that perhaps not all of us want to be a part of Will Smith’s, or the President’s, or whoever’s, “family” — to make him, and his issues, the center of our lives? As if we don’t all have problems of our own?
