Idris Elba on SAG Awards Winners: 'Welcome to Diverse TV'

Idris Elba made a statement about the diverse actors being awarded at the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium on Saturday (January 30) in Los Angeles.

After winning two awards himself, the 43-year-old actor got up on stage to present a clip from his movie Beasts of No Nation and said, “Welcome to diverse TV.”

At that point in the show, six out of eight awards presented during the broadcast so far went to a diverse mix of actors.

Idris won two awards for his movie Beasts of No Nation and his television series Luther, Viola Davis won for How to Get Away with Murder, Queen Latifah won for her television movie Bessie, Uzo Aduba won for Orange Is the New Black, and the full cast of that series won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

It seems like the actors are using the award show as their statement toward the Oscars diversity issue. The voting period ended on January 29, two weeks after the Oscar nominations were announced and zero diverse actors were nominated.

Another guy who thinks his race should be honored above his acting skills. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a quarter black myself, but this diversity issue has gotten way out of hand.

  • Eathan Crane

It was so predictable they would hand out the awards to all the black nominees, just so they could shut up, i hope they are happy now that they’ve won awards because of their skin color, not because of their performance. Not that i think Idris and Viola don’t deserve it, i think they are both amazing actors, and they deserve it, but Uzo Aduba and Queen Latifah?

  • faxperez

thats is so stupid he say that…is not the firts time who someone black won the award

  • Do Tell

I can’t really agree or disagree, as I have not seen these performances. I have seen Viola Davis’ work and know she is a great actress and likely very deserving.

However, yes, I also felt all these awards were given out to black people because of the diversity issue. Could the SAG awards be any more obvious? Some of the winners probably don’t feel very good about it this morning and that is sad.

In reality tho, the term “people of color” = minorities, not just blacks.

  • Do Tell

I think the SAGs are just trying to “placate” black actors bc the Oscars are coming and we already know the nominations.

  • Gina

Viola and Uzo both won SAG awards last year too, so it didn’t just come out of nowhere. Idris’ performances have been raved about by both whites and blacks. He deserved to win.

  • Gina

Even white people thought Idris was cheated out of an Oscar nomination. He has the chops and he deserved to win.

  • Do Tell

    That’s good to know.

It is so amazing how white people cannot stand to hear that other ethnicities (and I do mean non-white, not just black) are discriminated against. Now that diversity in Hollywood has been put in the spotlight, white people as usual don’t hear about it, don’t want to talk about it and shrug it off and think that “those people should open their own Hollywood” is a realistic option. It is disgusting. Non-white people don’t walk around saying whoa is me. Those deserving black actors are just as talented as the white ones. The winners were picked by their peers (ALL SAG CARD CARRYING MEMBERS.) God help you all deal in the future when you will be living in a world less white.

  • benfbeckmaN

I’m not the one to judge that I didn’t see the film and I believe you, still, people think that they should win just for the sake of variety.

  • Gina

I’m not one of those people who think someone should win just because they are black (for example, Will Smith’s performance in Concussion was NOT Oscar worthy IMO). Viola & Uzo; both black women who won SAG awards last year, both won again in the same category this year. So I don’t see it as a pity win. They are very talented woman, so I would like to believe it was deserved. It’s unfortunate that from this point forward, every time a person of color wins an award it’s gonna be questioned.

  • benfbeckmaN

I agree. It’s terrible that we still have to deal with this topic today.
