Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on 'Gods of Egypt' Whitewashing Critics: 'I'm Not Even Playing an Egyptian'

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is all smiles while heading into The Today Show‘s studios on Thursday morning (February 25) in New York City.

The 45-year-old actor recently responded to critics of his upcoming movie Gods of Egypt who say that the film whitewashes Egyptian characters.

“A lot of people are getting really worked up online about the fact that I’m a white actor. I’m not even playing an Egyptian; I’m an 8-foot-tall god who turns into a falcon. A part of me just wants to freak out, but then I think, ‘There’s nothing you can do about it.’ You can’t win in that sort of discussion,” Nikolaj said.

FYI: Nikolaj is wearing a Tatras Reno coat.

Horus, his character, was an EGYPTIAN God. The depictions of him by Egyptians in tombs, on walls, etc, was a brown man. You can’t win that sort of discussion because you’re wrong. The way he laughed of the character being “an 8 ft god who turns into a falcon” shows that he can’t even respect the belief system behind the role that he’s playing and is proof alone that he shouldn’t have this role.

  • Sandy McFarlane

How ignorant of him….. “There’s nothing you can do about it.”
He could (for starters) acknowledge his white priviledge and Hollywoods constant whitewashing of african and overall non-white roles (for example Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in that flop of a Peter Pan remake).
Homeboy really needs to check himself and realize he is straight up ignorant and part of the problem.

  • F*ck off

You know, when people stop attacking others like uncivilized people and start working together and educating each other, then things will change. Blaming people and pointing a finger continuously exacerbates the problem. AND NO I AM NOT DIMINISHING THE ISSUE. It’s still the issue. But keeping all this hate and anger up just keeps this an unresolved issue.

And I think we are all better than that, right?

  • Gina

Blissful ignorance and the resulting overly defensiveness displayed by people like Nikolaj also exacerbates the problem.

  • F*ck off

Well, there is a catch 22…the majority of actors have little or no control in the actual production of these types of movies.

  • Gina

Which is why having integrity & principles go a long way in turning down roles.

  • F*ck off

Actually, getting acting work is close to impossible without help no matter what color. That’s the entire population of Los Angeles. It’s what allows casting couch abuse to run rampant.

  • Gina

People in high places such as producers and the like should be more culturally & historically accurate and sensitive.

  • F*ck off

    Yes, this I agree.
