Oscars 2016 Ratings Mark Second Lowest Ever in Viewership

The ratings are in for the 2016 Academy Awards and the total amount of viewers is the second lowest amount in history for the awards show.

34.3 million viewers tuned in for the show on Sunday night (February 28), down from last year’s total of 37.26 million people.

The least-watched show in Oscars history was in 2008 when Jon Stewart hosted. 32 million people tune in for that year’s awards.

Chris Rock hosted the show this year and gave a monologue that touched upon all of the controversy over the acting nominees being all white actors.

Shouldn’t have let a black man get all racist with his monologue. Millions of people shut off their TV when that started up.

  • Sim

Surprised it’s wasn’t the lowest ever instead of the second, what a unwatchable show.
Chris Rock can go and fuck himself, so unfunny.
3 hours of race peddling poor I’m mutil millionaire and only got to star in 2 movies this year not 5 “, the plight 2016 black person.

Ever victim group was out victiming each other or liberal cause peddled.

  • Curt Noydb

Who wants to waste three hours of their time watching a bunch of super-rich celebrities expose their ignorance or whine abut how hard life is.

  • Arx

You’re ignorant as fuck. However, race was WAY overplayed at the Oscars this year. One joke would’ve been enough.

  • Sharis

I think Chris Rock did an excellent job. There wasn’t enough star power to give a boost to the rating – first and foremost – no Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

  • Dimme

LoL More star power then Leo DiCaprio, the only movie star left and finally winning a Oscar.
The rating would have been even worse if wasn’t for him. Big names like Jennifer Lawrence & Mat Damon nominated or sentimental favorites like Stallion are the only reason people watched.

Last year there was no movie stars nominated ( no Angelina or Brad) and it was hosted by a barely known gay TV actor and still he had way more viewers.

    Media magnifies a fabricated controversy.
Media plays public into hate-filled segregation.
Media slams private award ceremony as if it were a public election.
Media encourages ‘white hate’ movement to punish white people for being white.
General public that watch movies for entertainment get disgusted and watch Netflix instead.

Yeah. The night went as expected.

  • Kaitlyn

    Wait until next year.

If these award ceremonies weren’t fake enough, how is it going to feel in upcoming years to watch a 3hr long award ceremony where tokenism will be forcing racial diversity and winners regardless of deserved performances.

The Oscars are pretty much over. Congratulations Will and Jada. You’ve managed to lower the bar even further.

What about perennial superstar nominee Jennifer Lawrence?

Remember that amazing performance when she looked like a little kid in grown up clothes and was all teary eyed and then laughed and then was all teary eyed again? I forgot the name of that movie but they keep remaking it every year for her.

  • Sharis

Apparently people care more about memes with DiCaprio than about his acceptance speech…

  • Sharis

Apparently people got tired of her ‘perennial’ nominations.

  • Von

Here’s a fact: ” DiCaprio’s win set social media ablaze and led to 440,000 tweets per minute, beating out the previous record of 255,000 Tweets per minute set in 2014 when Oscar host Ellen Degeneres tweeted a star-studded selfie that “broke the Internet.”
It’s telling that actual lowest rated show was when a out out liberal hosted it; John Stewart, second only to two shows Chris Rock hosted.
If Dicaprio and and other more popular stars hadn’t been nominated this would been the lowest rated show in history.

  • Von

If they keep going like this the Oscar’s will be relegated to just watched by few million viewers if that and only people who care will be celebrity watchers.

It’s already happening to hollywood, the movie star who could carry a movie is gone, they rely on foreign grosses or super hero movies to even exist.

  • Von

Then why was his win the most tweeted moment in history.
Apparently people care to do anything else then watch Chris Rock host the Oscar’s and drone on about “diversity”

  • Dimme

Apparently you’re confused or too stupid to realize your argument is pointless.
Angelina and Brad weren’t there last year, nor was there any “star power”, so why were the rating higher and by lot. And why was this years the second lowest in Oscar history.
