Ian Somerhalder Partners With WildAid to Save Elephants

Ian Somerhalder rides atop an orphaned elephant during a past trip to Zimbabwe.

The 37-year-old Vampire Diaries actor has partnered with WildAid for its “Year of the Elephant” campaign to ensure that more elephants are born this year than are killed by poachers.

Ian recently told CNN that he became passionate about saving elephants when he bonded with one during his trip.

“I was staying in Zimbabwe in the bush at this incredible conservation institute,” Ian said. “Every morning I got to wake up and have my coffee with a young, orphaned elephant named Dojiwae. Both of her parents were killed by poachers unfortunately.”

Ian emphasized that not buying ivory products is one of the best ways to save elephants.

You partner to “save” elephants but at the same time also ride them and take pictures. Why Ian, why?! Someone clearly needs to be more informed. Riding elephants is a huge form of abuse and millions of people boycott elephant riding for a reason.

In addition to not buying ivory products, how about not riding an elephant like it’s an amusement park ride? Ian Somerhalder has a long way to go on his mission to help elephants if he thinks that riding an elephant is OK. Elephants should be far out on the horizon, not beasts of burden for Ian Somerhalder.

How much do you know about elephants Ian since you are RIDING on the back of one….nevermind a BABY one??? Please do a little research (or a LOT) before you become a rescue expert! Go to some sanctuaries and find out that it is NOT acceptable to ride on an elephant. Talk to some real experts. There are 2 elephant sanctuaries in the USA and a wonderful one in India, and another in Thailand, and I am sure more in Kenya.Maybe you are spreading yourself a little bit thin with good intentions. Why not just donate to those that already exist and that need help financially without your name?
