James Franco Talks Shia LaBeouf's Performance Art in 'New York' Magazine

James Franco is transformed into Vincent Van Gough on the cover of New York magazine’s April 18-May 1, 2016 issue, on newsstands now.

The 38-year-old actor sat down for an interview with the magazine’s art critic, who famously called James’ 2014 art show “self-obsessed.” Here’s what James had to say.

On Taylor Swift’s Instagram: “Taylor Swift — certain performers, in my opinion, post very kind of PG content. Appealing content, but nothing controversial.”

On Shia Labeouf and performance art: “I was just trying to identify what was maybe going on with him, which was something that I could relate to. Not to his work, but the experience he had. A male actor in his late 20s who’s feeling like his career is out of his hands. Here he is doing these Transformers films that make his career, but he’s feeling like, ‘Oh, I don’t have credibility, and I’m part of this machine.’”
