Diane Kruger Names Peter O'Toole as Meanest Actor She's Worked With

Diane Kruger played the role of Helen in the 2004 epic movie Troy and she says that her co-star Peter O’Toole is the meanest actor she has ever worked with.

“You know who wasn’t very pleasant, was Peter O’Toole,” the 39-year-old actress said while being interviewed by her Sky co-star Norman Reedus for Buzzfeed.

“It kind of sucked. He’s dead, so I can say that. But he wasn’t the most pleasant person,” Diane added. “He was just a drunk, and Peter O’Toole. You know, he had a two-day part, and I played Helen of Troy and he was Peter O’Toole, and he just wanted to make sure that everybody knew that he was Peter O’Toole. And he could barely make it up the stairs. We were on a set that was — you know, you have to climb, like, I don’t know, 100 steps to go up.”

“He was just — first of all, everybody thought he was gonna die right there and then. Because it was, you know, 120 degrees, and he had to walk up 100 stairs. And he was very old, and very drunk,” Diane continued.

Peter passed away in December 2013 at the age of 81.

Never speak ill of the dead.
Oh, and since I bothered to comment, you sucked in The Bridge. You made a mockery of autism and those who have it or live on the continuum.

  • Shivani Yadav

I have never heard anything bad about Peter O’Toole. Maybe she had an exception of having a bad experience with him but damn that she is so mean. She said it all in such a rude way!
“He’s dead, so I can say it”, “first of all, everybody thought he was gonna die right there and then”.. I mean, what the hell, girl?!

  • Dave Roberts

Whatever he was at the end of his career Peter O’Toole was an absolute legend of film and stage. Lawrence of Arabia and Becket are some of the best performances ever. For many actors he’s one of the gold standards to aspire to like Brando.

Maybe he was dismissive of Kruger because he didn’t respect her? Diane Kruger is nothing but a pretty face to Hollywood. That’s why she even got the role in Troy. She really should just keep her mouth shut and thank her lucky stars she hit the genetic lottery because she sure didn’t build her career on talent.

  • Jess

I really used to like her but after the Reedus debacle and now this, she just comes off as very immature for her age. First of all she thinks it’s somehow better to speak ill of someone once they are dead and therefore unable to defend themselves?? Second of all, he was motherfu*king LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. What has she done that even comes close to that?

  • devvv

That was so rude and classless.

  • xica

Oh if he was so unpleasant let him die! Why bother to talk about him and bring him back in the news? Seeking attention right? Because your ways were pretty rude

  • xica

He was probably doing these mediocre actors and actresses a favour

  • LiiL

By the way, even if you are the greatest star of Hollywood, thats not a good reason being an alcoholic asshole. Cause’ what if what she said is true?
I like Kruger, and yeah never speak ill of the dead, but if it was true, then I see no problem but the style of her speech.

  • FerCat

Peter O’Toole, drunk and rude was still the best actor in that movie.

  • Gina

Listen, if someone was a jerk when they were alive, you don’t have to all of a sudden act like they were a saint just because they’re dead. She was keeping it real (granted, she was a bit over the top, but still).

  • Alex

When Peter O’ Toole did Tory, he was already old…Naturally, he was a bit’ weak and slow especially if you have to shoot under the sun and walk up 100 stairs….If ever Peter O’ Toole asked for special attention, its just natural to give it to him being a senior actor, especially a respected on….Everybody assumes he was drunk on the set…This girl needs a reality check on how to treat and work with older people.

He’s dead, so I can say that

    No, you can’t.

You are a coward or a liar if you keep your mouth shut before his death. And a hypocrite.

  • http://notly.ru/ Mapгapитa Бaбoвниковa

“f it was true” — true that old man can’t walk stairs? So rude from him.

“he is an asshole” is an opinion.
the only fact she described “he was drunk and can’t walk”.

    Separate opinion and fact.

  • LiiL

If it was true, like he was a drunk, and not the most pleasant actor. Both fact and opinion.

  • http://notly.ru/ Mapгapитa Бaбoвниковa

He was drunk is a fact (if he was), he was not pleasant — opinion.
How we can trust the opinion that never was aloud until dead man could speak to defeat himself? I think if you want to say something — say it in a face. She is acting cowardly to me.

  • LiiL

“He was drunk is a fact (if he was), he was not pleasant — opinion.”
That’s what I said, as well.
And how could you know she did not say to his face back then? Just because she did not mention in interviews until now.
I can totally imagine situations like these during shooting.

  • susieq2u

If he was a mean drunk then what’s her stone-cold sober excuse for being a bitch?

  • susieq2u

IF Peter O’Toole was a mean drunk, then what’s her stone-cold sober excuse for being a total bitch?

  • Dave Roberts

Whatever the case it’s in poor taste. She didn’t say he was abusive, misogynistic or harassed her; you know real problems. Her beef seemed to be that he was battling his own demons, he was old and a bit rude. To me none of that justifies the response she gave and she has nobody to blame for the reaction to her comments but herself.

I’ve been around the entertainment industry for 15 years, in a variety of jobs. There are dozens of cases where I’ve seen or heard of actors, actresses and directors act like tools – some being the most revered actors working today. In fact, I can think of one incident involving a co-stars on that film.

Forget the drama about Reedus I bet it wouldn’t be hard to find someone who has had a bad experience working with Kruger. At least O’Toole had a legit reason as he was clearly battling his demons. She should be careful because I’m pretty sure not everyone is pleased with her comments.

  • Hildegerd Haugen

So, all I really get from this is that an aged, drunken Peter O’Toole acting in 120 degree heat gave by far the best performance in Troy after exhausting himself by struggling up 100 stairs. Doesn’t say much for Diane Kruger’s acting abilities, does it? What’s her excuse for her horrible performance?

  • Hildegerd Haugen

And what about her horrible performance in that movie…

  • FerCat

She was also new. But yes, very unconvincing. I guess Peterson just wanted to cast a fellow German.

Frankly, she didn’t fit the role. Gillory’s tv version was a little better.

  • S. Mary Doran

Listen, what does it add to any kind of discourse to hear a not terribly talented actress sniping about how pathetic it was for an 70-something-year-old man to struggle walking up 100 stairs in the 120 degree sun? And to gripe about his being sort of old school prima donna about his own importance? Any serious actress would be honored to work with him, and have the grace not to snarl about him publicly, like a valley girl irritated with her elderly chauffeur. Taking about poo is also “keepin it real” but most of us don’t care to hear it, and it adds nothing of value.

  • S. Mary Doran

    ….nor good manners or graciousness…

  • S. Mary Doran

    beautiful response!

  • Gina

Oh, please. You’re months late with your comment but I’ll humor you. Diane was asked a question and she answered. Period. The man wasn’t pleasant; if he were, she wouldn’t be taking issue with his inability to walk, I’m sure she’d be the first one to help him up those stairs. Nasty people don’t garner much sympathy from others, that’s just the way it goes.

  • charlweb1

Troy was a very uneven film but I loved Peter O’toole as King Priam; his scenes with Brad Pitt were the best part of the film.
