Emma Thompson & Michael Caine Speak Out Against 'Social Media Actors'

Emma Thompson and Michael Caine attended a royal reception for British Academy Award winners last week in London, England, and made their thoughts known about actors getting cast due to large social media followings.

“We’re casting actors who have big [social media] followings so the studios can use their followings to sell their movie. The actors are becoming attached in the sort of business way to their social media profiles, and I think that’s a disaster,” Emma said at the reception (via The Telegraph).

“These days, they just say, ‘I’m going to be an actor because I want to be rich and famous.’ And then they do a little part on television and everyone knows who they are. They can’t really act… I knew I wasn’t going to be rich, I knew I wasn’t going to be famous, I knew I wasn’t going to be a movie star, I just wanted to be a good actor, that’s all,” Michael said. “They’re very young now. I was 30 before I became well known. I’ve watched it ruin people. By the time they’re 30, they’re through.”

Who are they referring to, specifically?

  • Broadzilla

That’s very true, now that every model thinks they’re an actress.

  • Patricia Wilson Chuppe

You still have a real talent, like JenniferLawrence or Melissa McCarthy as two examples, that come to the forefront because of their acting talent, and these actors will have staying power. Otherwise, Emma Thompson and Michael Caine are correct that most of what you see is low/no talent people, who look really good, and who become temporarily famous because they have a large social media following who will “in that moment” watch a movie or TV show in order to see more of their social media crush, but once that crush is over, so are the careers of these “stars” unless they can come up with a new angle to keep their media fans interested. An example of this is Jersey Shore, You still occasionally hear about Snooki not because of getting “trashed” and then doing stupid things, but because she cleaned up and became a mother and talks about her kids and how they change your life. Have another kid, get some more publicity, but when was the last time you heard about Mike “The Situation” or the other so called stars of Jersey Shore or any of the other reality shows. The true reality is that once the show burns itself out in a couple of years, not only is the show nothing but history, so are the “stars” because they have no real acting talent to fall back on.

Well they are half right but they are ignoring the fact that like the way of the typewriter being the only tool to use to write and in came the computer…so it is with actors. The producers are only looking at the bottom line. If certain “actors” or “actresses” have big twitter following THEN YES the producers thinks this following will show up at the box office. And actors who are savvy (.i.e. RDJ Idris Elba Tom Hiddleson) know this but come on it’s common sense. The younger the audiences who are attached to social media they will undoubtedly go to the film the see advertised by actors on social media.

Though it sounds a little like “I’m old and don’t understand young people” the points Emma and Michael make ARE valid. But, don’t blame the young Celeb/Actors, blame the movie companies who are so afraid of losing their $100 million investments that they mis-cast big budget films all the time. And nobody is encouraging the young Celeb/Actors to use some of their over-paid salaries to hire an acting couch to work with them on the films they’ve been mis-cast in.

    Hooray for Hollywood!

  • gradybridges

exactly. It’s not like Selena Gomez or Kim Kardashian are getting roles. Most of the big, young name actors/actresses don’t even have an online presence. I think they are full of it

  • dalovelee

But unless they name names their complain makes no sense. reality tv stars aren’t getting cast in films, or scripted tv shows or on broadway. Even if one wanted to say Disney shows kid actors end up in films…well they did start on Disney channel or Nickelodeon. But reality tv stars never crossover into legit films?

  • Casey C

they’re not wrong. there are so many starlets famous for falling out of clubs drunk af, or that have a couple small roles and build an instagram following nad get famous and then get roles rather than the other way around.

  • 777

Cara Delevingne is the first name that popped into my mind.

  • 777

They’re obviously not talking about actor/actresses who got a lot of followers because of their talent and body of work (RDJ has been there long before social media was around), they’re talking about people who use the fact that they have followers to get a job despite the fact that there are people more suited for the role. Cara Delevingne for example.

  • http://www.instagram.com/upcomingdccu TUTU

Cara is good actor. Wait till Suicide Squad, you’ll see.

  • http://www.instagram.com/upcomingdccu TUTU

Examples: Shay Mitchell cast in Mother’s Day, and Harry Styles cast in Nolan’s next film.

  • Frank

I do not think they are referring to anyone specifically. I think they see young people’s popularity and assume they haven’t put in the work.

  • Frank

I think it is a bit of a catch 22 for young actresses especially tv actresses. The producers want them to use social media to help promote the show and then fans realy on them to share. It is a tool just like them doing press junkets it is just more prevalent.

  • 777

She wasn’t hired because of her talent though. And even if she’s good, there were better actresses than her that didn’t receive the role because they don’t have the amount of social media followers that she has.

  • dalovelee

but who can you say that who be? they are talking about more than one so why would one model turn actress getting one or two roles ? be worth making a comment. It must be some more notable names. What actors/ actresses in droves have been getting roles from their twitter feed followings..

  • dalovelee

but that just one model crossing over to be an actress and why would that bug Emma Thompson or Michael Caine.

  • 777

She’s not the only one, she’s just the first example that i thought about.

  • 777

I’d say that about half of the Glee cast for example. A lot of them aren’t really talented and enjoy a big social media following thanks to their work in the show, which allows them to get roles. Another example is Taylor Swift who received a movie role just because she has a lot of fans. Taylor Lautner has his Twilight following which allows him to get movie roles and a lot of money, despite of the fact that he’s to a good actor.

How come that kendall jenner its a top model now only because she is part of the kardashians family

  • FlaviaDion

    True

  • kelly

Christopher Nolan would never put someone in his film because of how many social media followers they have. The guy doesn’t even own a phone. He gave it to him because he did well in the audition.

  • http://www.instagram.com/upcomingdccu TUTU

she was hired because she’s a good actress. If they wanted her simply for the press they’d be using her in all the ads and promo materials right now… yet she’s kind of lost. She would have also been cast as Harley Quinn if this was all about PR but YET they gave it to the best actress for the job: Margot Robbie.

  • http://www.instagram.com/upcomingdccu TUTU

WB probably made him give the guy a small role. Nolan always stunt casts for his indie projects, he needs the buzz.

  • Visitor

This isn’t any different than what Rebecca has said about the “social media models.”

  • Visitor

Oh no. He was cast because they want teenage girls to pay money to watch the movies. The same reasons they keep hiring K + G for modeling gigs.

  • Visitor

They are generalizing, but they are correct. In Hollywood, they do hire people based on “popularity.”

  • Sprite

Forms of media include tabloids, magazines, television, radio and events, so feedback isn’t just restricted to networking online – otherwise everybody would be video conferencing with ‘slick’ marketing. I don’t think celebrities expect the attention to be all the time.

  • illumina

Not just the old actors noticing. Chloe Moretz talked about this same thing a while back. She explained that her most bizarre experience while auditioning for a role was when a casting director asked her how many Twitter followers she had at the beginning of an audition.

  • Frank

Not sure your point. Those are forms of media but not social media which is the discussion here. You can’t ensure you will be included in all those other forms of media ergo why they use social media which is instant and you can be heard at least by those interested in following you. My point is they criticizes the use of social media to get jobs but for some actors they are expected to be on social media for their job. Just like they are expected to do press junkets.

  • Frank

But they did that before social media existed.

  • Sprite

You want instant, do what they did in the past and pick them up at the Diner.

  • Mike E

Says Emma Thompson, who unashamedly uses her own celebrity status to push political and scientific issues where she is a total novice. DiCaprio is another one; a high school dropout who uses his celebrity status to tell people what is right and wrong regarding the very complex issues of global warming and the environment.

  • Frank

Pick what up at a diner?

  • Frank

The glee cast at least have put in the work but none of the are getting big movie roles like say Harry Styles of Carla Delvigne. They are getting roles comparative to their work and status. Be it another tv show or Bwya roles. Maybe Criss and Agron are the only ones with questionable talent that their #follower may have helped get a role

  • kelly

    For example….?

  • Sprite

    Some good tips hopefully !

  • jtrevino79

Cara is a top supermodel, though. That probably had more to do with it than her social media presence.

  • 777

Cara is a top supermodel because of her social media followers.

  • jtrevino79

About as true as saying Giselle is a top model for marrying Tom Brady. No. She was walking 9 shows in NY by 2011 and was Model of the Year at BFA a few months later. If you follow fashion, she was a big deal among top designers.

  • 777

She was a model with a lot of jobs but she wasn’t a supermodel. Same goes for KJ. The only reason she received bigger jobs with better pay is her growing social media following, which was helped by her relationship (Harry Styles).

  • jtrevino79

No. Social media is not powerful enough to make you the second highest paid model in the world. That takes real modeling and having a look that resonates with current fashion. KJ rose by social media and her name. You can get some modicum of success that way, but ultimately she’ll never reach the level of Cara Delevingne who is pretty much a Kate Moss-level model. Saint Laurent and Chanel need to sell clothes. Social media followers are just not the clientele that can afford to buy what they’re selling.

  • the man from amsterdam

she is a top supermodel because of her face and especially epic eyebrows.
