Paul Bettany Defends Johnny Depp from Amber Heard's Claims

Paul Bettany is speaking out to defend his friend and colleague Johnny Depp against the domestic violence allegations from Amber Heard.

The two actors worked together on the movie Mortdecai, which came out in January 2015.

“known Johnny Depp for years and through several relationships. He’s the sweetest, kindest, gentlest man that I’ve ever known. Just saying,” Paul tweeted.

Someone tweeted back to him and said, “Just because you get on well with someone, does not mean they are incapable of doing something horrific. Just saying….”

“well that might be true, but I probably have MORE insight than say… Uh… You… Or all the other piranhas on the internet,” Paul replied.

Um, no Paul, it really doesn’t give you any better insight, but just the fact that he is an actual friend, and not the internet’s. I mean, you have parents who deny and disbelieve their kid would harm or hurt anyone, yet it happens. I would be just as shocked if any one of my friends were accused of abusing someone, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

  • Arx

I agree with his last comment. Everyone is quick to villainize both of them in different ways. Most people have already decided Johnny Deep is a monster because someone told them to think that way. I don’t know their situation so I have no right to judge especially without knowing all the facts.

  • fromanotherplanet

His last comment contradicts his first comment. His last comment should have been his first comment and he should have left it at that. It is crystal clear in his first comment that he is calling Amber a liar. He calls Depp sweet and kind and ended by saying just saying. It is clear what he is trying to do. Hypocrite much?

  • sdb68

an actual friend who knows the person will have more insight than an anonymous internet user picking up information via the media. that is just a fact. if i suggested to you that i have more insight into whether your best friend is capable of violence than you do, you would consider that ridiculous. paul bettany was right.

  • Arx

But he’s friends with Johnny and Amber while the people on twitter aren’t. He’s stating that people who don’t know the situation shouldn’t rush to judgement. I agree with that statement. I don’t know these people so I’m not going to demonize Amber or Johnny yet. Until its confirmed that he is or isn’t a wife beater I’ll attempt to remain unbiased. Either way, its an awful situation and something very serious.

Well said. AH could have friends vouch for her….friends don’t know what happens behind closed doors in the heat of the moment. PB is not right at all…he should have kept his mouth shut until he has facts not his subjective opinion and it’s proven either way. Keep an open mind folks it’s what you’d want for yourself. Just look at Rolf Harris….wouldn’t his friends say how kind and gentle he was?

  • goshdarling

Neither of us have better insight on whether a friend can afflict violence on someone else. But I would know why that friend is a good person while you would not. I cannot argue that same person didn’t commit violence. Paul insinuates that Johnny could not have committed violence just because he’s a good friend. Being a good friend and committing violence don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

  • lshelton22

Another one to cross off my list. Thanks for showing your ass, Paul.

  • tia maria

Being an actual friend gives Paul a better insight as he has most likely spent time with them as a couple along with his wife since Amber and Johnny have been together. Plus Paul isn’t saying it didn’t happen, he is doing what any friend would do which is to speak on the character of his friend against people on social media who are quick to judge a situation that we know nothing about.

  • fromanotherplanet

Being friends with Johnny does not mean he knows what happens in Johnny’s household. I am agreeing with you but his first statement implied that Amber is telling lies and that is very much in contradiction with his let us not vilify someone before we get all the facts message. I am not vilifying Deep but at the same time, I am not dismissing Amber because Depp’s Hollywood bros think he is a good guy. We should all wait until we get more facts before wagging fingers.

Bettany should have to clarify if he means when Depp is drunk and high or just when he’s working and sober.

  • Laurie Gbd

I have never heard of him beating up women and having anger of hatred and violence. Sounds like this was her plan from day 1. Follower of his good deeds. He has a long list of kindness like a lamb.

  • j.mo

Their support is only relevant if they mean even when he’s drunk and high. Bettany and the ex- wife are commenting on him as a sober person.

  • Arx

    I see what your saying

  • FrenchGirl

I know that he defends his friend but he wasn’t there when it happened.

  • FerCat

To be fair, he only made a character assessment. He did not flat out say he was incapable of violence.

  • FerCat

    I get Paul’s point.
And frankly, if you’re not going to say anything good about your friend then you’re probably a terrible friend.

    Paul included; he wasn’t there.

  • jonsie

I agree with this. Paul is an intelligent man and not the sort to seek constant personal attention. He is being a loyal friend, knowing it will result in online hatred. It would be different if Depp had been convicted in a criminal court, but he hasn’t.

stress brings out the animal in the sweetest persons. I find it hard to believe my Johnny would do anything like that though!!!

By all accounts Depp has spent a lot of his life drunk and high, so a friend of many years has probably seen him in that state. My husband is a docile, friendly drunk, my sister is animated and flirtatious and my cousin is aggressive. I am not saying any of these people are incapable of acting differently under extreme circumstances, but they have been remarkably consistent over the last 20 years or so. My point is that if any of these people got in trouble I would have some insight. If my cousin was accused of attacking someone in a pub I would quietly offer my support to his wife. If my husband was accused of the same, only a conviction with indisputable evidence would convince me otherwise.

  • tia maria

Paul isn’t claiming to know what happened and is not jumping to conclusions like so many people on the internet are.

  • deadre

drug addiction does make people into monsters. i’m surprised wth all of the adulation, money and downtime these people have, they’re all not addicts. it’s a crazy isolated life but that’s no excuse for bad behavior. it’s just the rush to judgement is wrong. And defending your friend isn’t.

  • sdb68

i can tell you now, emphatically, that my close friends are not capable of domestic violence. i base that assertion on years of discussions with them, observations about how they manage their anger, and from comments their ex partners have made about them. i should think paul bettany is using the same type of information to base his conclusions. his fundamental point remains correct. he has more insight than internet know it alls.

  • Lili

But maybe he knows more than us ??? Because he knows them, you cant hide bad character or drug abuse from the people you truly know you and love you.

  • BB Cakes

I don’t believe Amber. I think she’s after money, young gold digging whore. She needs the money, since her acting career is in the toilet. Should be a lesson for him too, don’t just go for the young pretty face.

  • BB Cakes

And this is coming from someone who grew up in a household of domestic violence. Someone doesn’t just become abusive, if he was the abusive type he would have beaten his exes too. She’s a damn lie.

  • Domino

That’s the feminazis to you (not to be confused by actual feminists). They will blame the man no matter what, even if it’s not true.

Best I can do is to no longer give amber my attention. Bye.
