Snoop Dogg Asks His Fans to Boycott 'Roots' Remake Series

Snoop Dogg is speaking out about the new History Channel remake of the Roots mini-series and he is asking his fans to boycott the project.

“How the f–k they gonna put Roots on on Memorial Day? They gonna just keep beating that s–t in our heads of how they did us, huh?” he says in a video on his Instagram account. “I don’t understand America. They just want to keep showing the abuse that we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago. But, guess what? We taking the same abuse.”

“When you all going to make a motherf–king series about the success black folks is having? The only success we have is Roots and 12 Years a Slave and s–t like that, huh? F–k y’all. I ain’t watching that s–t,” Snoop continued. “F–k them television shows. Let’s create our own s–t based on today, how we live, and how we inspire people today.”

Roots premieres on the History Channel tonight (May 30) at 9/8c and airs each night through Thursday.

I have to agree with Snoop. That has be done, done and done. Unless your Oprah who loves that *hit history played again and again. Why not make a movie about successful black people? Althletes, movie stars, whoever. Inspire people not rehash history again.

I don’t see where it has to either or. I personally don’t think ROOTS needed to be remade, but not for Snoop’s reason. As for History, it never gets done, it keeps getting made. No one is complaining about films that involve the America Revolution and Civil War and those are events that get retold over and over in film and television.

Instead of taking offense he should get together with his wealthy friends and make more of the type of films that he’s taking about. If you have money to do so, it doesn’t make much sense to just complain about someone who is doing something while you’re doing nothing. How about investing his OWN money and time and taking the risk at the box office.

I so agree.. stop with the slavery bit already.. we know what happened, we know it was wrong.. but none of us actually lived through it.. so just end it already.. there is more to black people’s stories than just getting humiliated in every sense..

    Never heard of this remake.

Never knew this was a remake. Just saw the images that came out, and I really like the cast. I don’t know much about slavery since I’m from Canada, and the only slavery, rape, and civil wars I know are, are about the French or the First Nation People (Native Americans). I mean, everyone in Canada is aware of black slavery but most of us don’t study it in history books since it’s not part of our culture. It might be mentioned in a few books, maybe 1 or 2 pages, but nothing we study for months on end, so I really enjoy movies like this where I get a taste of the struggle. The US is pretty much the only country who develops these types of history films regarding slavery. I haven’t even heard of any that came from Europe, so I find them very educational. But I do understand why black Americans would be mad.

I agree with Snoop. From a industry stand point, I don’t think people truly understand how much money goes into something like this. All that money spent on remaking a movie about slavery when film roles and production can be created for up and coming Black performers. For those who say, “well, we need to keep this message alive to teach the children where they come from”. BULLSH*T. It is not up to a movie or tv series to teach kids, it’s up to parents, grand parents, elders, etc. People want to know why Black youth are so desensitized to the struggles of past Black America, it’s because the older generations don’t want to talk about it and I get it, it’s because it’s too painful. Fine, I get….it’s irresponsible, but I get it. But we can’t just tell children, go put on a movie or watch tv and all your questions will be answered.
But the flip side is, if we really want to teach our kids where they come from, these studios and networks need to use the same budget money and write stories about Ancient African civilizations like Khemet and teach them who were BEFORE slavery. That they come from great Kings, Queens, Scientists and Philosophers. That’s the story I want to see. When they start making those, I’ll support.

Snoop’s comments might sound fine to some of you, but what about our younger generation that have never seen Roots? Who is educating them????? Besides, hasn’t it been said and proven many times over that “he who does not remember the past is condemned to repeat it!” We are repeating this “slavery” business in so many different ways it not even funny. For example, I see drug addiction as an example of slavery. I see poverty and welfare dependence as slavery. I see poorly educated families as slavery. I see Black stereotypes everywhere and yes, that’s slavery too. Slavery is being repeated in many more ways today than ever before in our society. I say show it over and over again and then show it some more, until everyone sees the light, by realizing how it fits into and relates to their everyday life right now – today, and until slavery becomes obsolete entirely!
