Rose McGowan Slams 'X-Men' Billboard for Promoting Violence Against Women

Rose McGowan is slamming Fox for using an image of Jennifer Lawrence being choked by a male villain as a billboard to promote X-Men: Apocalypse.

The billboard shows Mystique in the tight hand grip of Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) in one of the final scenes of the movie.

“There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film,” Rose told The Hollywood Reporter. “There is no context in the ad, just a woman getting strangled. The fact that no one flagged this is offensive and frankly, stupid. The geniuses behind this, and I use that term lightly, need to to take a long hard look at the mirror and see how they are contributing to society. Imagine if it were a black man being strangled by a white man, or a gay male being strangled by a hetero? The outcry would be enormous. So let’s right this wrong. 20th Century Fox, since you can’t manage to put any women directors on your slate for the next two years, how about you at least replace your ad?”

“I’ll close with a text my friend sent, a conversation with his daughter. It follows: ‘My daughter and I were just having a deep discussion on the brutality of that hideous X-Men poster yesterday. Her words: ‘Dad, why is that monster man committing violence against a woman?’ This from a 9-year-old. If she can see it, why can’t Fox?” she added.

she ain’t no fucking woman she’s a mutant, I mean at some point women gotta stop screaming sexism all the times because that is why people don’t pay attention to the real problem, you want the same role as men being paid the same as men but don’t want to do the same things men do ? like how you gon put mystic and she’s just gonna sit pretty, this movie sucks anyway but I’m talking in general bitch it’s a fucking movie not real life
and as for the black men being chocked I don’t think they need to be on the billboard, they’re already being strangled, shot or beaten by the fucking police and all that on tape

  • mafragias

    i mean that’s a f*cking stretch … people have to stop giving feminism a bad name…

  • devvv

This isn’t “casual” violence against a woman. It’s literally a yellow-eyed, blue skinned mutant hero being choked by a super villain for a fictional fantasy movie. Her outrage is the reason people don’t take feminists seriously. It’s the reason people like Amber Heard and all of Cosby’s accusers have to jump through hoops and bend over backwards to prove actual abuse.

  • Camila

Oh, please… What a moron. I bet if it were two men she would complain about the lack of women in the poster. She would slam the billboard for its sexism. I’m so tired of this.

  • LadyRed

She has always been such an attention seeker.

The purpose of marketing is to get people interested in the product. In this case, the beloved hero is being choked by the villain. It’s great marketing for fans who want to find out how the hero gets out of harm’s way. That’s it. That’s all it is.

  • Soured

yeah yeah, blablabla some women just see sexism everywhere

  • Mapгapитa Бaбoвниковa

man committing violence against a woman

    Stop brainwashing a child!

  • Silly People

Oh brother. Some women can find sexism in anything. As a woman, I find this very tiresome.

  • Ash

So if it’s the other way around would she still feel the same? I don’t think so. Feminists always say feminism is about equality but when they get the negative aspects of equality, they contradict themselves.

  • Sonny Crockett

It’s two aliens fighting. What’s more “stupid” and maybe more offensive was McGowan, when she shot bullets out of her prosthetic leg in that Tarantino film. Roses are red, violets are blue…..sit down and be quiet Rose…

  • TD

Not only is Rose looking like Sinead O’Conner, but she’s acting like her.

  • Rose Vasquez

What??? Its a superhero movie, is she on crack???? ITS A MOVIE!!!!! not a documentary, is she gonna complain about violence against non existent blue mutants???

  • Kaitlyn

The interesting part of her fake story:

    Blue Man = Monster
Blue Woman with Fish Scales = Woman

Yeah. Brainwashing is not “Deep Discussion”.

  • Michael Lee

Isn’t it funny how people who are not getting work in the industry lately are always the ones who are quick to criticize something the aren’t apart of or that’s popular. And what’s with the bald head. Unless she went thru chemo and I didn’t know about it, but isn’t a woman cutting her hair completely bald(especially when she had such beautiful hair) a sign of wanting attention or to make some type of statement which is still wanting some attention. She just fell of my list of being one of the coolest-beautiful ass female.

  • Kaitlyn

Did you know that three blocks down from that domestic abuse billboard is another billboard showing an upright mouse wearing a tuxedo and skipping towards a princess castle. When will this animal cruelty end!!!!

  • Steven Schneider

So, by this logic, if it were a male mutant being strangled then it would be a case of male on male violence and no one would be upset, because male on male violence is okay. Also, quote: “Dad, why is that monster committing violence against woman”? This is the most eloquent and insightful 9 year old I have ever come across and I want to sit down and discuss Philosophy over coffee with her.

Dad, why is that monster man committing violence against a woman?’

  • marsshmallow

But the “male” who is strangling Jlaw is a VILLAIN, he is supposed to act violent and villainous. Damn, feminist are getting stupid everyday.

  • VanityInsecurity

Its either racist, homophobic, or sexist.. so tired of the constant complaining of the simplest things being critiqued. There are so many bigger issues going on with the world.. terrorism, global warming, poverty, hunger, illnesses.. lets just focus on a made up characters fighting in a movie.. get a clue.

  • Ruth’s husband Ben

So, women want equal representation as superheroes, unless it involves being treated equally. Do I got it right?

  • marsshmallow

and this feminazis throw a fit when guys don’t open doors for them but at the same time screams equality

  • shoes4life

The sad thing is there will be a few women who will actually support her rant.

  • LoveThatDoll

RIDICULOUS… way to go to try and stay relevant. Bet if she was playing Mystique she’d be singing another tune.

  • millerz

Why does EVERYONE LOOOK for an issue with EVERYTHING!!! Cant it just be a mutant being attacked like it actually is??? LOLOL

  • Lo Mo

u know, if a man cheats, his car will be sprayed. if a woman cheats, she will get killed.

woman set on fire bc leaving her boyfriend

  • Lo Mo

    unfortunately she is right somehow.

two aliens fighting, yet the position, the handholding, the posture , the choking move is sadly all typical human.

two ALIENS w/ superpowers are fighting, yet they don’t use weapons, rays, supernatural forces. the bigger-stronger one choke-holds the fragile one. tha’s what u see.

  • meaghan

well, maybe because it kinda is everywhere. we’re so desensitized to it that something like this might seem silly, but I don’t think she’s necessarily wrong.

  • Tato

Not everything is a gender issue!

  • meaghan

the comments on this article are proof enough that sexism is alive and well in our society. the amount of people saying things that roughly translate to “THIS is why everyone hates feminism!!” is sad. this isn’t why people hate feminism – some people just fundamentally hate women. and people seem to hate rose mcgowan because she’s a feminist, not because she’s ~bad at being a feminist.

I agree that focusing on something like an XMEN billboard seems a bit trivial and silly, but if you follow rose at all, you know that she spends most of her time discussing feminist issues, big and small. in the grand scheme of the things she talks about, this is just one of many examples she points out of the ways we are casually desensitized to violence against women. it wouldn’t seem so silly if you considered it in context, but isolated like this sites like JJ are clearly just looking for a reaction to bait clicks/comments (which we’re all unfortunately feeding into).

  • Drew Somervell

Did she see the movie? It was completely rape free. Not one rape. There was were plenty of innocent men being melted into walls and floors. Heck Apocalypse even hired a handicapped mutant and two underprivileged female mutants then gave them all free upgrades on all of their powers. I guess his attempt to murder all humanity is cool just as long as he doesn’t put his hands on a lady who was trying to kill him. Does it mean anything to Rose that she was trying to kill Apocalypse?

  • irena.bursova

I am with you, even if we’re the only ones around ;)

  • irena.bursova

IKR. Men are worried women will laugh at them, women are worried that men will kill them. Yet, we have equality, right.

  • irena.bursova

I agree with Rose. Independetly of her, that was the first thing I thought when I saw the poster. Choking a female, how awesome and funny, right?

  • j k

“in one of the final scenes of the movie.” thanks for the fucking spoiler

  • :)

That’s not Jennifer. It’s Mystic and she is in the middle of saving the world in that photo.

  • Sprite

Humanoid mutants, one bad – the promo picture could have been better on the billboard, this is more to do with advertising to a global market, we got enough circulation on the television.

  • skye3245

I understand her point and wanting to bring a focus to women rights but this wasn’t it. Mystique is a villain/antihero who is literally one of the strongest people in Marvel(she has taken on literally every hero including the avengers). To not do your due diligence and think that Marvel or Fox would just throw out a billboard and not know that is foolish. It is literally the strongest current mutant who can become anything facing the oldest first mutant. Saying only the strong survive. Meaning that Mystique (which in the movie she is basically the main character) may prove that no mutant can stop him. She has gone and made an issue where there is not none. She could have chosen the fact that Jean(another strong heroine) is portrayed as meek. That Storm is not as strong as she is in all other interpretations. I could list female shortcomings in the Xmen films and in a lot of Fox movies. This here isn’t it. So I do agree that female representation has its shortcoming, but this here is to show a section of the plot which is what billboards are supposed to do. So Rose should take a chill pill. Also, I follow her she’s been 50/50 on her causes she needs to make better career choices and better choices overall. Because this seemed more like coming after a movie in the number 1 spot rather then fighting for women’s rights

  • VanityInsecurity

    omg this is hysterical.

  • skye3245

So you didn’t see two mutants with destruction behind them with a villain of the story at a heroes throat? Because thats what it was. You can’t have it both ways. If she’s a hero she’s going to get hurt. Captain marvel and Wonder Woman are coming, do you not want to see them fight or do you want to see them just walk in and say “please stop”? Because that would be the opposite of equal and showing their strength. Plus did you see the movie? Cause Mystique wins

  • Neroke2013

Yes this is EXACTLY why people are turning against Feminism. But I guess you’re too busy drinking out of your I bathe in male tears mug or planning on disrupting the next Milo Yannapoulos event to figure this out

Got news for you NOBODY outside of your little echo chamber is buying your bullshit anymore. Focusing on the Trivial is what people like focus on exclusively now. You want to make an accusation now you need to have things like facts and actual evidence now. Simply saying it isn’t enough anymore.

No click bait needed someone has to is stand there and the Feminists just keep dishing out the stupid.

But you know an idiot like you will just dismiss this because of whatever. Going to say there’s sexism here then FUCKING SHOW IT and be specific

  • Neroke2013

Look now the army of delusional stupid now has two.

There’s sexism here show it and be specific

  • Neroke2013

Yeah that totally explains the MASSIVELY lighter sentences that women get for the same crime. Go ahead there Lo Mo prove me wrong

  • Neroke2013

    97% of combat deaths
    93% of workplace deaths
    70% of the homeless
    67% of violent crime victims

Go ahead there Irena challenge them facts. Got some news for you. The days when you can just say stuff and not get it called out anymore, those days are DONE

  • Neroke2013

With Skye3245 on this. Not that fact checking is something you do. People like you almost NEVER fact check

  • Minha Sincera Opinião!

    I Agreed

  • Ash

Using Buzzfeed as if it is a reliable non-biased source? Lol! Come on, you can do better than that. Well, maybe not. Are women really treated like crap? Let’s see:

    1. They get less sentences than men for the same crime

    2. They are less likely to get the death sentence than men

    3. Women have the right to abandon their child without their partner’s consent.

    4. Women have the right to keep custody of children after divorce unless proven to be an unfit parent.

    5. Women initiate 70% of the divorces in America, yet claim MEN have commitment issues.

    6. Men pay nearly 2x more than their women do on Valentines Day, yet women pretend like they’re so objectified as if they don’t objectify men.

    7. Look at most of the typical famous male singers, and see how they are TOTALLY not objectified like women singers. They have to flash muscle, body, money, “swag”, etc.

    8. Women have the right to women-only clubs, gyms and etc but when men have the same, they would cry sexism, misogyny and blah blah blah.

    9. Women are less likely to fight in wars or serve in the military.

    10. Women seem to think it’s okay to put their hands on a man, and not the other way around.
Just look at Beyonce’s sister who attacked Jay Z. People asked what he did to deserve it. If it was the other way around, he’d be in jail, no questions asked.

Feminists don’t like facts, they love fiction. Feminists do not use logic, they act on emotions because they can play the role of the victim. Bravo to Rose McGowan for making feminism more irrelevant than it already is. If you still don’t understand why feminism is misandric men hating movement, then you are a chump.

  • lurkerette

Seriously? She’s in character, not a human woman, and the thing strangling her is not a human man.

  • Tyson Kidcaff

If the roles were reversed I’d bet nobody would think it’s promoting violence against men? Too many people look in to shit too much these days, stop making it something it isn’t. I’m sure Rose never had a problem when she was getting paid to get magically abused on screen by all those Demons in her younger years on charmed… double standards much.

  • meaghan

whoa, language like that will NOT be tolerated in my echo chamber!

  • meaghan
  • jane

video games are not real either, but people go out and kill because they watch them. same principle. dumbheads emulate what they see
