Ed Sheeran Is Being Sued Over 'Photograph'

Ed Sheeran is facing a lawsuit from a songwriting duo claiming “Photograph” was copied.

The 25-year-old singer is being sued for $20 million in damages by the duo, who believe the hit song borrowed heavily from their original “Amazing.”

“Photograph,” which was released in 2015, allegedly contains 39 notes that are “identical in pitch, rhythmic duration, and placement in the measure” to their 2012 composition performed by Matt Cardle (via NBC).

Ed and his label have yet to comment on the suit.

That might be the most blatant music plagiarism I’ve ever heard. I don’t think I’ll ever listen to that song again, that’s flat out offensive.

    $20 million in damages

I doubt they could earn that much or any damage was done to unpopular singer at all.

Surely they will win some millions.

JJ, it’s so disrespectful not to mention the names of the songwriters (Martin Harrington and Tom Leonard)…

I don’t think Ed Sheeran stole from Matt Candle’s song. It was just a weird coincidence some the similarities. The lyrics are soooo different. and 20 million dollars in damages? Pleasz.

  • Michelle Eve

Ed stole it!!! Clear as day! Shame on you Ed!

  • FlakesofSunlite

Now if Ed Sheeran stole “LegoHouse” from somebody, then that person can sue for 20 million dollars in damages, but “Photograph”? I don’t think so.

  • Gina

It’s not about the lyrics it’s about the arrangement. Even Sam Smith had to pay up because Stay With Me sounded so much like Tom Petty’s I Won’t back down.

I hope Ed Sheeran fans won’t attack Matt Cardle over this. He’s not the one suing, he just sang the song.
