'Big Gay Musical' Creator Fred Caruso Dead at 41 from Suicide

Fred Caruso, the co-writer and director of the 2009 movie Big Gay Musical, passed away on Monday (June 13) after an apparent suicide.

The 41-year-old creator, who was producing the Off-Broadway production Newsical, broke the news in a scheduled note posted to Big Gay Musical’s Facebook page later that day.

“For most of my life I have been absolutely miserable – except for when I was creating. I have nothing left in me to create,” Fred wrote. “I don’t think I have any idea what love or happiness is. I have been incredibly lonely and at the same time – I hate being around people.”

Fred asked mourners to remember him by donating to the Trevor Project, which helps prevent suicide in LGBTQ+ youth.
