Justin Timberlake Praises Jesse Williams' BET Speech, Apologizes After Backlash

Justin Timberlake has apologized after he faced backlash for tweeting praise for Jesse Williams‘ inspiring speech at the 2016 BET Awards.

The Grey’s Anatomy actor received the Humanitarian Award for his work with the Black Lives Matter and he spoke about the movement in his speech.

“@iJesseWilliams tho… #Inspired #BET2016,” Justin initially tweeted.

A fan replied saying, “So does this mean you’re going to stop appropriating our music and culture? And apologize to Janet too.”

“Oh, you sweet soul. The more you realize that we are the same, the more we can have a conversation. Bye,” Justin said in response. He later apologized for this statement.

JT shouldn’t have apologized as he had nothing to apologize for. That fan was being a cunt. People just need to stop being so damn sensitive.

  • Carmex

Seriously in 2015/2016 people suddenly got offended by EVERY LITTLE THING. What happened?

  • zuzuspetals

why did he apologize? why is everyone so easily offended? GET A GRIP, PEOPLE!

  • plez

If he was inspired than he was inspired. He should not allow twitter comments bully him into apologizing.
Controlling a conversation means there is no real communication occurring. Some on twitter say they want truth but what they only want is for you to hear their truth.

Apologize to uneducated idiots who thinks that any culture could be stolen?

  • laura

Why did he have to apologize, he was just praising someone!
I really really hate how nowadays anybody who says something that is honest, polite, engaging but not perfectly lick-asses-politically correct has to apologize… Seriously…Apologize for what???

  • Michele V

What the fuck is wrong with people always trying to find a way to complain about something, making this world even more angry than it already is?

You still didn’t answer the guy’s question, Justin. Inquiring minds want to know.

  • starchy

Morons – humanity and its cultures all evolved because of appropriation. There would be no pop music, or any other kind of art without it. And white people are not the only ones who ever appropriate.

  • Von

That’s what he gets for ass kissing race peddlers . The whole show was one big racist piece of crap, especially that speech.
Losers like Justin Timberlake should realize his skin colour is all that’s relevant to them.
And blacks should stop with ” appropriate ” bullshit, especially in music, when every musical instrument and concepts were created decades and centuries in European cultures. Engineers and computerized technology modernized Western music that black Americas nor their culture had any irrelevancy to it’s modernization.
Has a black American or African even won a Nobel Prize or is a Laureate in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology , Medicine, Literature, Economic Sciences, etc.

Western music Vocals, instruments, composition is a European creation. All traditional and still different African music is beats and drums don’t even use vocals.

    Medieval c. 500–1400. Renaissance c. 1400–1600
    Baroque c. 1600–1760 Classical c. 1730–1820
    Romantic c. 1780–1910 Impressionist c. 1875–1925
    Modern and contemporary
    c. 1890–1975
    20th-century (1900–2000)
    Contemporary Postmodern
    c. 1975–present. If blacks had never stepped foot in America Western music still be exactly same today except without gangster rap, while they’d living be the jungles of sub Sahara Africa or on boats trying sneak into Europe.

Black Americans only have a culture of any kind because they “appropriated” from the greater white European culture for last 200 years and why black Americans culturally are vastly different then all African black cultures. While whites culturally around the world essentially the same.

And if they want get into not benefiting or using anything they didn’t create or invent let’s get at, no more blacks in the NBA or playing sport like football and they should get off the Internet real quick and stop speaking English and probably head over Haiti or more likely Africa, might be hard without being able to use a plane or ship.
Then can live like most black cultures do, heard ape meat is a delicacy over there, just have to worry about Ebola side effect.

That’s a good question. So I find myself wondering why so many comments here are angrily complaining about other people angrily complaining? That’s what humans do, apparently. …. Unfortunately there are a lot of marginalized people on this planet who don’t get two months in prison when they’re convicted of rape or house arrest when convicted of drug possession and so many more factually based realities. And, yes, a culture can be stolen and monetized because the right “face” is associated with it. I don’t think Justin is the right person to lob that claim at but that doesn’t make it untrue. His music is fun, laced in his own dance-pop/slow-jam style, usually produced with Timbaland, and I like a lot of it.

  • suzie

As a minority myself, I don’t think music belongs to certain race. Once music is released into the air, it’s for us to be entertained and inspired. Why segregate music by race? If a white/Asian/Hispanic person loves rap music, then why can’t he/she make that kind of music? He talks as if there is a conspiracy, but I’m not sure of it. It does boil down to money. I don’t think MLK would have liked his speech… it wasn’t about love, but was initiating bitterness. He got people talking though, so I give him that… we do need room for improvement, and he probably does too.

  • GPKurt10

Justin responded to a troll when he should have known better. Especially since he is starring in a movie called, “Trolls.” Whoever that guy was Justin took the bait. Trolls like that are just miserable people with nothing better to do than to suck others in their pit of despair. You are best to leave trolls be to rot in their misery.

  • yourbestguest

that sucks. He said something positive…I’m a pacific islander. I see a lot of white dudes have tribal tattoos. I used to think they were misappropriating my culture but I realize imitation is a form of flattery. Why hate on those that admire your culture? oh wells

  • Lawrence Rainbow

This is a good example of why this country has gone to shit, you can’t say anything anymore without someone freaking out. Whatever happened to having a opinion and being able to state it?, freedom of speech is one of our basic rights isn’t it?. Sheesh.

  • Legendary Trolly

I know. Our race complains too much and pretty seen they will incite a race war! I am black btw!

  • suzie

Thanks. Believe me, I hate racists as much as him, but for him to make harsh generalizations is so outside of what I see in the world. Of course, I live in a diverse city, but I definitely don’t see the kind of racism from white people that he talks about. Most white people I know seem to be just the opposite. I think the more we intermingle with people outside of our race, the more we will break down the barriers.

Righteous uppidy black ppl are the most obnoxious, drama queens and they should just shut up….timberlake “appropriating” black culture huh? Ok then…message to all black ppl: STOP APPROPRIATING ALL WHITE THINGS…GET OFF OF TWITTER AND THE INTERNET AND IPHONES AND FACEBOOK–ALL MADE BY WHITE PPL BUT WE DONT GO AROUND ACTING LIKE POSSESSIVE MORONS ABOUT IT…also, since timberlake is more talented than most current black artists and better at doing black soul than most blacks, maybe u should get your heads outta the trough and turn off minaj and crappy lame rappers and start actually listening and making real music like kendrick and frankie ocean…also, eminem is regarded as all time best rapper just as hendrix is regarded as all time rock guitarist…the difference is white ppl are open minded to other things other than themselves unlike uppidy retarded black ppl babbling on endlessly about stupid bs and who use and live white things and culture….white supremacy and privilege? Yes. Its a white majority country. And majority country enjoys supremacy and privilege…your ancestors should built bigger boats and guns instead of hacking each other up and selling each other out to slave trade long before whites…u got beef with timberlake and have a problem living in a peesent day white majority, then go back to africa and immerse yourself in that shitty culture…im sure in a few days youll be tweeting about starving and getting beaten for the shape of your nose instead talky ng against trivial bs like timberlake…goof.

  • el douche

Yes. Thank you. All they see is race and they act so entitled to their own culture and pretend 90% of everything they use and live daily and enjoy arent created and developed by white ppl. Thats the thing that bothers me the most. Ok ill stop listening to black soul if they can agree to stop using twitter, iphones, internet, and like pretty much everything they do in life…all theyd have left is awesome music, sports, and african dresses….ok thats the trade off…also since when is it controversial for a racial majority at 70% of pop to have supremacy and privilege? As far as i know EVERY racial majority in a country has supremacy and privilege–democratically or otherwise….including africa…if they are so annoyed by appropriation and the evil conspiracy of white supremacy in a white majority country, then i wonder why they dont go back to africa to enjoy being majority and their culture…hmmmm, seems like they want best of both worlds of living in a western nation with perks and progress and protections created by white democracy and white capitalism and white social services and white laws yet say such a nation is a disgusting white supremacist that they despise and hate white ppl…as a majority white ppl should be respectful but as a minority black ppl should even more so…like get with the program, its history and its now and its getting ridiculous …how many blacks shootin blacks in chicago so far this year? Blm and blacks seem to only call out whites rather than fix their own fucked up shit…same with slavery: they refuse to face the real narrative that blacks sold out blacks and slavery was widely practiced not just by whites…even when there are obvious contradictions and gaps and exagerrations in their line of thinking, they just double down and say any problem was because of whites and make excuses and are apologists for their own fucked up ppl…the white police killed hampton but his fellow black panther black buddy william oneal ratted him out…a muslim killed martin and black muslim killed malcolm..all these stories of their heros taken down by the white man are all fantasy…reality is since the beginning of slavery to america to present blacks have continuously shot themselves in the foot…just like how haiti overthrew whites to becone first black nation with independence, only to revert back to totalitarian dictatorships and internak power struggles and coups that has now resulted in one of the worse black nations in the world…they can drive but just cant steer than blame us everytime they crash…aids epidemic? White ppl fault, not uneducated savages bangin like monkeys…no no no, its colonialism….we wouldnt even have aids if africa wasnt so messed up yet they blame the west and we have to fund their own mistakes and still get bitched at…

  • el douche

Exactly. Also, its all relative and i think ppl take for granted or arent even aware of how they appropriate and use white culture….social media, internet, videogames, movies, tv etc…these arent just mediums that happened to be dominated by white ppl: these are actual things we make and innovate and popularize and standardize as white ppl but we dont act possesively about it or lecture ppl, and no one really gives us credit for such massive influences and uses in their lives….yet a whiff of a soul singing white guy that out souls blacks, gets called out….that guy twittering shoukd stop twittering then cuz its technically white

  • el douche

Get off the internet and your phone if youre against appropriation cuz its white…same with every instrument and technology involved in making supposed black music that historically wouldnt even exist if africans living in america didnt have gospel church, fused irish folk to make blues, and classical fusion with african to make jazz–gospel, blues, jazz all roots of all black music, and all uniquely african american because of its fusion with white culture and vice versa, not cuz slaves were magically creative and inventing things from scratch without any white culture….but yea, youre not the person i should be levelling this at..still doesnt make it untrue though either

  • el douche

Funny that no one knows their history…blacks base their narrative on a mythological past where whites are uncreative evil supremacists and blacks are angelic talented victims

  • amanda root

At first I felt that Justin Timberlake saying “we are the same” was a great thing to say. Then I did some reading and some soul searching. Now I understand that it wasn’t the right thing to say. Far from it. I, as a white person, shouldn’t comment at all. And I’m not saying this in a hurt way. It’s just that I will never get it because I will never live it. It’s like this: A person cannot say to a diabetic, “I am just like you because I can’t eat sugar”. The diabetic would say: “No you are not like me whatsoever. Diabetes is occupying my mind, destroying my career, and it could even kill me. You really don’t understand what it’s like to be diabetic at all… especially when you say things like ‘we are the same’”. Replace “diabetic” with “being black” and tell me that you still don’t understand that what JT said was wrong.

  • yourbestguest

I see what your saying but you are equating tech inventions with race ownership which is weird. I mean we all eat peanut butter but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t because a black man invented it.

  • el douche

Why is a jazz player playing music somehow cultural yet the piano and clasdical music that led to jazz is just something out of thin air devoid of any euro white culture? Why is playing basketball cultural yet inventing basketball was just something from thin air whites made just cuz we like balls? U cant have it both ways…its alllll linked together…u ppl seem to think only.minorities have cukture and innovations when whites have so much culture and innovations that are appropriated that we dont get any credit for anything….

Tacos is mexican food culture…whats so controversial about that? Food. Sport. Arts. Etc. Why is tech and the very things that make sport and art suddenly not cultural and devoid of whiteness? U make no sense.

  • el douche

Either way my point is to show just how petty and stupid it is to make a laundry list of culturally defining things and creations and innovations….that guys dumb speech at Bet about appropriation at one point stated: “black ppl are magic but our innovations and creations is ours and not just magic.” So he himself defined it as such. If thats the thing, then u have to eaually apply that logic to defining white cultural innovations and inventions as not just magic–as made by and informed by and developed by whiteness. U cant have it both ways.
