OITNB's Danielle Brooks Upset After Airline Agent Says She's 'Lucky' to Fly First Class

Danielle Brooks took to her Twitter account on Thursday morning (June 30) to share how she was upset about an airline agent calling her “lucky” to be flying first class.

The 26-year-old Orange Is the New Black actress, who is currently starring on Broadway in the Tony-winning musical The Color Purple, was on her way from New York City to Los Angeles for an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“I hate when gate agents look at me like I’ve never flown first class and say ‘You’re in first class, lucky you!’馃槖 really tho,” Danielle tweeted.

Danielle was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in The Color Purple, but lost to Hamilton‘s Renee Elise Goldsberry.

really? so everything is race related.. stfu already, Ive heard that said to white people too…

  • LaCroix

the only thing lucky on her is the fact she has an acting career..

  • YupVideoFever

They said it to me too. So what. She’s lucky she has a good job to pay for it. That’s it. Facepalm.

  • Nimrah Ahmed

Anyone’s lucky to fly first class.
    Stop with the clickbait!

  • Dee

i dont see anything about race in her comment…WHY IS EVERYONE TRYING TO SAY SHE IS MAKING IT ABOUT RACE?

  • Little Paper Stars

I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be patronising or race realted by gate agent, I’ve had it said to me, it was horribly perky but that’s about as offensive as it got. That’s her own insecurities tainting a situation I think

  • LindSAY

That doesn’t sound malicious. Why is sheso upset ? Everybody is looking for a story these days.

  • Madsxx

Oh how oppressed she must feel to be flying first class…get out of here.

  • cutitout

You’re right, she didn’t. With that said, many whites choose to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the everyday biases and double-speak that black people encounter in this world. The fact is, because it exist, black people/people of color are always plagued with the question of whether or not to take things like this at face value or racist double entendre. Nothing is ever a big deal when you really don’t have to deal with the problem. of course white people would think nothing of it, because they don;t have to deal with the same racist/stereotypical assertions that people of color have to.

  • cutitout

judging from the position you seem to take on all thing race related……………..Of course this is how YOU would feel.

  • Clovis

Yeah, that was just friendly chatter. There’s no way it was a race thing. Never have been in first class myself, and I would feel very lucky if it happened.

  • RainbowCandy

“Omg how dare people think I don’t afford first class!”

  • Ausangel01

Get over yourself. I bet 99 out of 100 people that fly first class have heard this no matter who they are.

  • bh

Guess she’s not lucky enough to have a private plane.

  • Truvey Taylor

    Your name is very apt.

  • Carmex

Covering her eye on her profile picture on Twitter? I know a lot of people think the Illuminati is bullshit, but why is EVERYONE in the show biz doing it?

  • tlb1974

Maybe they were being genuine and letting you know that you were lucky that you could afford it because the average person can’t. I don’t see it as being mean or rude. Seems to me some people look for reasons to be offended!

  • jrpieces

Black People take everything Offensively nowadays….People tell other People they are lucky to be flying 1st class ALL the time, even to white people

  • bh

    Everybody is racist…SMH

  • bh

What do you think she was implying?

  • VanityInsecurity

    Stalker much?

  • AeeJay

you’re a damn hater to everyone that doesn’t see things like you do. you know what that makes you right?

  • Gina

The only difference is, white people have the luxury of not having to second guess people’s intentions. When you experience racism on a regular basis, it becomes difficult not to question the intentions behind people’s words. Society is to blame. Not to mention insensitive people like yourself who’ll never understand.

  • Dee

there are SO many other things it can be. i get told that when i walk in first class looking homeless or like a kid (i still get carded…not telling u my age tho).

  • Dee

i can understand it being annoying when you have earned your money and paid your ticket. its not luck, its hard work. WHY ARE YOU GUYS SEEING RACE IN HER COMMENT? something is wrong with u guys….

  • Dee

i got an A on an exam and my neighbor said lucky u… like i didnt earn it. all i saw in her comment is her annoyance with someone calling it luck like she didnt earn her money and pay for that ticket…

  • Dee

fuk u racist. stop generalizing a whole group. plus, do you see anything about race in her comment? I see someone annoyed that her being in first class is luck and not earned. she paid for the ticket, not someone else.

  • siennagold

I don’t think it’s a racist comment. I’ve heard that comment so many times said to all types of people.

  • Lisa

I took a train from London to Glasgow in March, and I travelled first class. One of the servers mentioned to me that I was fortunate to be in first class that day (coach passengers were cramped as the train was full), and I agreed on many levels. The service and comfort were wonderful, and really – I was travelling from London to Glasgow.

Maybe we all just need to keep our feet firmly planted on the ground. The next time someone tells me I’m lucky to be in first class, I will agree, because I will be lucky.

  • cutitout

Not my fault, you post so much that your name and positions are so recognizable to me……Get a life.

  • VanityInsecurity

    .. right.

  • LaCroix

LMAO.. you do realize that if you recognize her name cus its often posted that means you post often as well.. nimrod.

  • VanityInsecurity

Disqus new block feature is so dope. :)

  • Ariana-Kaelita

And how is that racist? I am sick of how everything has become so PC.

Even A-students fail exams. There are tricky questions, moody teachers, other reasons. Luck is important, the word itself is nice and positive.

If there is some sarcastic tone, always good to add:

    “Yes, I am lucky I am that smart”;
    “Yes, I am lucky they pay good money for talent these days”;

“Yes, I am just lucky that I’m not some lazy ass – I work hard/ study hard and that’s how I got it”. End of argument.

  • mississaugamamma

If you were a fly on a wall in a room where white people were talking you would hear comments all the time such as this. It doesn’t mean anything personal. Sometimes it’s meant to be funny, or smart or a put down. Why is it if the same words are said to a black/person of colour it becomes racist? It is only talk and means nothing.

  • mississaugamamma

    Excellent post!

  • dukester

oh please! there was nothing wrong with saying lucky you….just another looking for something to be turned racial. THIS is what’s wrong with America! these are the people who perpetuate the hatred!

  • dukester

why? just to keep the hate of the white folks going! looking for a payout or something for free, i’m sure

  • dukester

we don’t think anything of it because we are not looking to think anything of it. blacks always want to find/see/think that something is being implied when 99.9% of the time, nothing is. you just want a reason to get angry, protest, and demand reparations. please, grow up and move forward instead of always looking backward! geeze

  • dukester

if she wasn’t implying she took it to be racist, why would she post it and now it’s a big thing and people like you are angry??? i think SHE and YOU are the racists

  • dukester

we aren’t, SHE is. that’s why she tweeted about it. SHE took it to be racial, and now SHE has caused this angry discussion

  • Gina

First of all, I never said it automatically becomes racist. It’s all about where the person is coming from. My point is that in the racist society we live in, black people can never be sure of where a white person is coming from. White people have the luxury of not having to worry about that because there is no widespread or deeply entrenched racism against white people in society as a whole.

  • val

I’m white and they said that to me a couple times … that’s not a racist comment you racist … that’s why I can’t stand that Tarja P Henson or whateva her racist name is .. she stars in Empire and when her son was stopped by a Glendale, Ca cop and pulled over after he was only a breath away from him hitting someone crossing the street, she called the media and police dept to complain .. everyone who would listen. If not for the video that racist would have had the cop fired, but there was a video to prove she’s a lying ugly slob. The son had drugs in the car the police saw but allowed him to go free. What a lousy mom she is … sick of this racist crap… I’ve never been but I sure don’t like the two of these creeps.

  • Dee

? i read her comment and i didnt take it to be racial. she said nothing about race. I dont see anything in it as racial. why do you?

  • Dee

i’m not angry at her comment, i’m calling the racist i replied to a racist (read their comment and mines). I said nothing about her comment pertaining to race. your belligerence is astounding.

  • dukester

No she didn’t outright SAY it, she implied it. And if it wasn’t such a big dang deal, the media wouldn’t be shouting. AND if that’s not what she was implying, she should tweet that she didn’t imply that and apologize for this ridiculous uproar. But that’s not what she will do because SHE most likely took it as racist, that’s why SHE tweeted it the way she did.

  • Dee

YOU can keep assuming all this BS, but SHE never said anything about race and SHE isnt causing the uproar, some crappy blogs are.
