'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Episode Count Announced

The seventh season of Game of Thrones will have seven episodes and it will premiere in summer 2017.

The last six seasons of the hit HBO series have all had ten episodes and the decrease in episodes marks the beginning of the end of the series. It has been rumored that the show will end after the eighth season and both installments will have a shortened episode count.

Previous seasons of the show have all debuted in the spring and the delay in the premiere will make the show ineligible for awards at the 2017 Emmy Awards. The seventh season will not be eligible for awards until 2018!

“Now that winter has arrived on Game of Thrones, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement (via THR). “Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.”
