Joel Kinnaman Opens Up About Getting Bullied as a Child

Joel Kinnaman looks smoldering in this brand new feature for Mr. Porter.

Here’s what the 36-year-old Suicide Squad star had to share with the mag:

On his father beating him as a child: “We’re good now. I’m working on a film about his life with a Swedish director. I’m going to play him. But see, he was beaten by his parents, too. And in my teenage years, I was definitely testing the boundaries, so…You know, hanging out and smoking weed. I had a lot of anger in me, and I was insecure. I was really skinny and I used to get bullied, so it felt good to bully other people. That made me feel stronger.”

On hanging out with the wrong crowd: “Every time I saw them on the street, I had to fight them. And if they saw my new friends, whom I played soccer with, they would rob them and beat them up, but leave me alone. It was really hard. I had a lot of anxiety. I couldn’t eat.”

On eventually settling into L.A.: “I’m on foot, I got my bike, I got my spots, people know me at my favourite restaurant. It’s more like home.”

Not to take anything away from what sounds like a troubling childhood, but seriously, every celebrity (and every normal person) has a story about how they were bullied when they were younger. That word is so overused at the moment that it’s starting to lose all meaning.

So, your father used to beat you, and you dismiss it because he was beaten as a child, too?

  • Visitor

BULLYING will NEVER lose its meaning.

I know, right? I wonder if he’d defend a molester that way.

Well, hopefully he will break the cycle of violence when he becomes a father. Having been beaten as a child is no excuse to beat your own children. Somebody needs to break the cycle and I bet Joel will do it.
