The Weeknd Donates $250,000 to Black Lives Matter Movement

The Weeknd is making a statement in a big way.

The 26-year-old Grammy winner just donated $250,000 to the Black Lives Matter movement, which is “is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society,” according to the organization’s website.

The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) also recently donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to establish an Ethiopian studies program.

In case you didn’t know, his parents are from Ethiopia and he was raised in Canada.

“enough is enough. it’s time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now. #blacklivesmatter,” he tweeted.

OUR society? You’re from CANADA, idiot.

Lol this clown can’t even date a black woman for a minute and he wants to save the whole race, everything he has ever done in his career has been to service his white fans, he’s such a fraud throwing money around.

  • Roscoe

George Soros wipes his a$$ with your donation.

  • Alexander Mohr

I wish that he had donated to another organization like the United Negro College Fund instead. Black Lives Matter may claim that they are trying to save black lives (which is an honorable goal), but they are just another racist hate filled organization seeking power. They don’t care about working with the police to reduce the number of deaths, they only want to yell and scream. They don’t care about reducing the number of black on black murders that happen everyday. They only want to crucify police officers and gain political power.

  • Gina

This is a nice gesture, but a bit surprising coming from a guy who doesn’t seem to think black women matter. Just saying.

  • Will

Is he trying to incite violence or something where is this even coming from? It’s never about unity. I would love one day for someone to have the guts to call out rap music and it’s horrible influence on our culture.

  • Shelby

You Give money to a group that promotes the killing of police officers and yet… You hope to help end racism. Makes total sense.

  • Michelle Eve

where did u get that BLM promotes killing of officers? Read the news before you go writing untruths…

  • Michelle Eve

No KKK are a racist group not BLM. They have been murdering black people or years.

  • Michelle Eve

So he cant date other women who are not black?

  • Shelby

I’ve seen and heard the chants. I’ve yet to see a BLM rep condemn the killing of police officers.

  • quartzsoup

The question is, can he date a black woman? Can he try to forge a life with a woman who shares his heritage? It seems natural enough doesn’t it, to choose someone who, since birth, has been sharing the same experiences he has when it comes to race and society in a modern world. You would think races would flock to each other naturally. But you cannot flock to your own kind when you are shackled to white supremacy, you can only thrive and be free if you elevate above and away from your race, and that’s a learned behavior from the separation tactics of slavery. Everything is connected, even the choices one makes in their dating life.

hes an ethiopian from canada. if he lives in the us, white women have about the same common heritage as black women to him. but to you, all black people are the same, hu…

  • Dee

    is he a rapper?

  • Gina

It’s not about that, it’s about the fact that he’s been known to have his security guards deny black women access to his parties and to his VIP section at clubs. It’s about the fact that he’s only had white girls as the love interest in his music videos (that is until people started complaining), and then when he finally had a black girl in his video, he literally had no contact with her. It’s about the fact that his girlfriend has a history of racist comments about black people on twitter. So no, it’s not just about him dating white girls for me.

  • Gina

Having a shared heritage simply because you live in the same country is a very broad standard with which to establish commonality. If he viewed black and white women as the same, then he wouldn’t be singling out white women to date now would he?

  • Dee

didnt mean he viewed them the same, but if going on heritage is the standard, he doesnt have more in common with black women then white women in america.

  • Gina

But I doubt very much that those are his standards.

  • Dee

i agree, but to be fair…I wouldnt want him anyway lol…

  • quartzsoup

Black people who’s ancestors were forcibly removed from their land ARE the same, your attempt to separate is learned, please stop doing that and embrace the fact that all black people are connected spiritually because of the horrors of surviving white colonialism.

  • Amber

    But he’s not a rapper.

  • Amber

    Which is still North America.

  • Dee

fun fact: his people were not slaves. stop trying to say all blacks are the same dummy.

  • Michelle Eve

Oh then that is sad for him…. We reap what we sow into.

  • Michelle Eve

Think you heard those chants in your head…

  • Shelby

Oh, I’m sorry. You must not watch the news. Video with very clear audio was all over the place a month ago. The signs with their hate filled messages of murder were quite clear. Try google.

  • quartzsoup

Good lord how sad to be this uneducated. His people are Ethiopian. Slavery flourished there for centuries. Get off gossip sites and go read a book or ten.
