Kevin Garrett Reveals His Current Favorite Songs (Exclusive Interview)
“‘Too Good’ by Drake/Rihanna and/or ‘Never Be Like You’ by Flume. Both crazy good. And maybe a more underground tune that’s in heavy rotation right now is Wouldn’t Mean A Thing by Bruno Major. Incredible writing and changes,” Kevin told us about the songs he’s currently listening to.

Kevin Garrett Interview
JJ: Have you only created one music video? Will you be doing one for Precious?
KG: There’s a video for Coloring and for Control. Being unsigned, I have to be crafty with the way I get my visuals and videos done. I’d love to do one for Precious. I think that’s a good plan.
JJ: Is there one specific instance that largely inspired “Precious”?
KG: The song was at it’s earliest point of conception inspired by a tweet from a friend. I saw the tweet and immediately had the whole idea but didn’t get to the song until later that year because of tour scheduling and whatnot. Then one night I made it in my bedroom.
JJ: Will “Precious” be on your new album? What will this new body of work represent to you?
KG: My album is constantly evolving and changing, but I think conceptually that song is still on the shortlist. Any new music I put out first and foremost is meant to showcase growth or stylistic refinement if you will. I want to always connect with people lyrically and musically, but I think the music I’m making and the sounds I’m exploring before anything else comes out is my way of displaying my maturity in songwriting, whichever direction it’s headed.
JJ: When was the last time you were starstruck and by who?
KG: Beyonce. Next question.
JJ: Where have you been hanging out in LA?
KG: I have some friends who live in West Hollywood. Certain neighborhoods remind me of Brooklyn and even parts of Pittsburgh, so I like to stay with my friends or on the east side, Silverlake/Echo Park area.
JJ: When was the last time you got really angry at someone?
KG: That was probably at myself and about 5 minutes ago for nothing really. I don’t really get extremely angry. It takes a lot to get me there these days. I get frustrated about things but angry isn’t the right word for it. I would equate the time I’ve been angry with similar experience in which I’ve been hurt by someone.
JJ: What was the last thing that happened in your life that translated itself into a song?
KG: I’ve had trouble writing since I got off the road. Sort of a decompression moment I guess this summer. I’m going through some things right now that perpetually inspire me. It’s nice to have those on your mind, something you think of almost all the time that inevitably provides inspiration.
JJ: What was it like working with Beyonce on “Pray You Catch Me”?
KG: It was an enormous honor being able to contribute to her album.
JJ: What do you think of Frank Ocean’s new album? Favorite song? Is it album of the year?
KG: Frank’s music, along with (hopefully) my music, is the type of music that needs to be lived with. It’s intelligent, and if it isn’t it’s pure art. More often than not, it’s both at the same time. To that end, I can’t say that I have a favourite song yet, but so far I think his visuals and just release strategy has been really clever. Nikes would be my favourite I think right now just because I’ve heard it the most.
JJ: What song that’s not yours (or Frank’s) do you currently have on repeat?
KG: Too Good by Drake/Rihanna and/or Never Be Like You by Flume. Both crazy good. And maybe a more underground tune that’s in heavy rotation right now is Wouldn’t Mean A Thing by Bruno Major. Incredible writing and changes.
