Tim Burton Addresses Lack of Diversity in Casting

Tim Burton has been criticized for lack of diversity in casting with regards to his new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Samuel L. Jackson does star in the film, but the large ensemble cast of the movie consists of mostly white actors.

“Nowadays, people are talking about it more,” Tim, 58, told Bustle of diversity in film. “…things either call for things, or they don’t. I remember back when I was a child watching The Brady Bunch and they started to get all politically correct, like, OK, let’s have an Asian child and a black — I used to get more offended by that than just — I grew up watching blaxploitation movies, right? And I said, that’s great. I didn’t go like, OK, there should be more white people in these movies.”

Samuel said he “noticed it,” but the lack of diversity in Tim‘s cannon of films didn’t deter him from tackling the role of Barron in the movies.

“I had to go back in my head and go, how many black characters have been in Tim Burton movies? And I may have been the first, I don’t know, or the most prominent in that particular way, but it happens the way it happens. I don’t think it’s any fault of his or his method of storytelling, it’s just how it’s played out. Tim’s a really great guy,” Samuel said.

Wow, Tim, great job for missing the point entirely.

do black people want to be cast in movies just because they are black? that’s insane.

  • John Dow

    Blacks are the biggest racists.

Diversity in Hollywood? Meh… How about diversity in Bollywood? All actors are Indians! :)

  • Kitty

The problem with all this forced diversity is that it’s not about equal treatment, it’s about special treatment.

    REALLY???

  • MissyMiss

    exactly. enough of this nonsense.

    And what is the point

  • John Dow

    Really.

  • cutitout

Did he really bring up the lack of white actors in “blaxploitation” films????? he is very much like Woody Allen, While his films are great, they simply all take place in some alternate reality where everyone is white, i suppose. Mars Attacks is the only film with a few black actors in it and you guessed it, It’s Pam Grier and a few other black actors from “blaxploitation” films.

  • cutitout

no, they want to be includes and written into the worlds that are being created that ultimately paint a portrait of the real world. Look at his filmography, the only real balck lead-co- is the animated black kid in coraline, other than that, black people as well as asians, Hispanics, etc don’t exist.

So what? A movie is not supposed to reflect “real” life. It’s a movie and it’s the director’s vision. Who are you or anyone else to tell someone how to produce their art?

Dont panic and dont worry, just another tool of the system. He is just doing what his masters told him to, otherwhise….

  • xyz

But they crave for white women and get them whenever possible. Black on white rape has reached alarming figures but sheeple dont need to know that because in the Marxist La La Land all is good and pink and fluffy.

  • xyz

Or in Nollywood. All actors are Nigerians.

  • JD

if you have to ask, then you’re someone who’ll never get it. it’s a waste of time to explain rationale to ignorance.
