Blu-Ray & Digital HD Releases
X-Men: Apocalypse – arrives on Blu-Ray and Digital HD today. Closing another chapter in the X-Men Saga, the mutant team of superheros faces their biggest nemesis yet, the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult are all back in this installment filled with tons of special effects and a new villain portrayed by Force Awaken‘s Oscar Isaac.

The film mostly follows the rise of the first mutant, En Sabah Nur who is bent on ending the world. Woken up from a previous attempt thousands of years earlier, En Sabah Nur, aka Apocalypse, is awoken in the early 1980s where he runs into the X-Men. The film interweaves this main story with more backstory, including Magneto’s tragic past, and Jean Grey’s troubled beginning. The film also treats us with an unexpected cameo from one of the most revered X-Men.

Compared to Bryan Singer‘s previous installments, this addition feels a bit more chaotic highlighting how ‘busy’ the X-Men world actually is with their plethora of characters, villains, and heroes. Nevertheless, despite what many critics have said, the film has great summer-movie-popcorn value and enough nods to the previous movies that keeps the film going. Once again, falling away from the comic-book universe, the film tells it’s own story about Apocalypse and those familiar with the comic books will note the large differences.

Overall, this film is a great pickup with the usual expectation that the third installment is usually never better than the previous two. The AVC encoded 1080p format juxtaposed with the DTS-HD Master Audio track really shines in this film. Extras include a hilarious Gag Reel, deleted scenes, and a great featurette looking at the X-Men film franchise.

The Purge: Election YearFrank Grillo reprises his role as Leo Barnes, catching up to him 2 years after Purge: Anarchy.

This time around, Leo is the head of security for a female senator during a presidential election year which pits pro and anti-Purge supporters. Once again, Leo finds himself in the 12 hours of lawlessness where crime and murder are legal and he must do everything he can to protect the presidential hopeful who is set on ending the Purge once and for all.

Unlike previous years where it seemed more like senseless violence throughout, this horror flick attempts to pull away and centers more on social commentary and the deeper conflicts of this concept. Under the context of when this was made, the film starts to become interesting with that premise in mind.

As for video and audio quality, the film is presented in 1080p with a standard DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack. The film also offers Deleted Scenes, a feature on the evolution of the Purge franchise, and a look at the main character of the film.

Overall – if you’re a purge fan, you’ll appreciate the evolution of the franchise and notice a deeper dive into the morality and politics of this fictional concept.
