Zayn Malik Reveals He Had an Eating Disorder During One Direction Days

Zayn Malik is opening up about suffering from an eating disorder during his time as a member of One Direction.

The 23-year-old “Pillowtalk” singer shares details in his new book, Zayn.

“When I look back at images of myself from around November 2014, before the final tour, I can see how ill I was,” he wrote. “Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder.”

“It wasn’t as though I had any concerns about my weight or anything like that, I’d just go for days – sometimes two or three days straight – without eating anything at all,” Zayn went on. “It got quite serious, although at the time I didn’t recognize it for what it was.”

“I didn’t feel like I had control over anything else in my life, but food was something I could control, so I did,” he added. “I had lost so much weight I had become ill. The workload and the pace of life on the road put together with the pressures and strains of everything going on within the band had badly affected my eating habits.”

Thankfully, Zayn was eventually able to gain the weight back and control the disorder, though he still struggles with anxiety issues now and then.

“I’m a bit older and a bit more wiser,” Zayn recently said (via Associated Press).

I am proud of Zayn for being so brave and candid about his issues. It will inspire awareness and comfort for others who are dealing with this.

I agree that underrating and overeating both should be labelled as an “eating disorder” because that is what it is.. but in today’s society, an eating disorder is considered someone who has a body image issue and is trying to become thin, which is why the headline can be a bit misleading cause that is not what zayn struggled with and the media likes to make us believe thats the case until we dig deep into the article

Zayn will overcome. He is young. His honesty about clinical anxiety & related eating disorder is refreshing. Self acceptance & realisation is all part of the recovery process.

1D’s greedy management have much to answer for!

he even said in an interview that it probably wasn’t a disorder & that he wasn’t eating much due to stress but not entirely skipping meals. The media is making a bigger deal out of this than it needs to be. Body image issues & missing meals out of stress are two entirely different things.

not eating or not having an appetite due to stress is hardly uncommon and isn’t usually called a disorder though. Neither is overeating and yet people are usually so much less sympathetic with that.

Zayn is honestly so brave for being honest. I could see what he was talking about when I think about 2014. I think about what he’s been through and his second beginning. I’m glad he put himself first and listened to his heart.

That was in a past interview where he wasn’t allowed to disclose he had an eating disorder while he was with 1D. The media is not making a big deal out of this but you are downplaying it coldly. What he described was an eating disorder, do your reasearch. He is discussing what is reflective of anorexic/bulimic conditions. The behavior and conditions he described would fall under the diagnosis of an eating disorder.

You are ignoring the part, where he didn’t state that he didn’t eat for several days straight and he also admits he didn’t recognize what it was at the time. In the future, he will disclose more about this and the role management played in it. These conditions often arise from trauma at the hands of other people and are associated with depression/anxiety.

  • Khazija

You clearly do not know anything about eating disorders. You also need to seriously read what he actually said. Not eating for days, extreme weight loss, viewing food intake as a form of control are all symptomatic of an eating disorder. My gosh, people are so insensitive.

Yeah, I’ve heard that he was deep in a heroin addiction, so either or.

Stay strong Zayn! I hope he can open up more in the future about many factors. He is a great example of how people should put their health and happiness first. A lot of people around the world can relate to this.

  • aj

    That is absolute fiction.

The media is so pathetic, trying to label him as manorexia. Its the worst label to put on a man

Zayn’s eating issues were more serious than that. It is clearly uncommon to not eat for a number of consecutive days, and using that as a form of control. He also mentioned that he was ill, because of these unhealthy eating habits. That in itself suggests Zayn acknowledges that he had an eating disorder.

Over-eating, especially comfort eating, is also a problem, that can result in obesity and is equally detrimental to one’s health in different ways. It is wrong for people to justify and/or downplay things on the other end of the spectrum as well.
