Johnny Depp's 'Fantastic Beasts' Casting Defended by Director

Johnny Depp is set to star in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but his casting has drawn some criticism due to his alleged domestic violence incidents.

David Yates, the director of the first movie, has opened up to defend the casting decision.

“The whole principal of casting the movie was go for the best actor; go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. As we started to approach Grindelwald, we thought, ‘Who’s going to take this in an interesting direction?’ In this business — it’s a weird old business — you’re a star one week, people are saying odd things the next, but no one takes away your pure talent,” David told Screen Rant.

Johnny Depp is a real artist and he’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor and we were excited about seeing what he would do with this kind of character. He’s fearless, he’s imaginative, he’s ambitious. We thought he’d do something fun and special. So we went for him purely on that selfish basis, we don’t care if he’s famous or not famous, we just know he’s interesting,” he added.

Johnny was cast in the movie well before his split from Amber Heard as his scenes for the first movie were filmed in January.

He is a great actor so there is nothing to defend.
Between Depp and Heard she is the one with the arrest for spousal abuse.
Depp had allegations thrown at him and then withdrawn. No arrest. No Charges. End of.

You neglect to mention that JK Rowling also spoke out in praise of Depp.

Nothing was ever proven against him. Heard withdrew all her allegations ‘with prejudice’ meaning that they can not be re-filed. No one could have prevented her from going ahead with the hearing had she wanted to, & if the judge had believed that there was compelling evidence they could have insisted that it proceed. Depp’s lawyers submitted extensive witness & exhibit lists, working within the legal system rather than selling & leaking items to the media, which indicates that they had counter evidence with which to refute the claims. Under these circumstances, I think it is totally wrong to condemn Depp and/or suggest that he should not be included in the franchise.

It should have been Francois Arnaud, but whatever.

    One word for Depp: alleged.
    One for Heard: arrested.
