Jennifer Lawrence Explains Why She's Scared of Fans

Jennifer Lawrence Explains Why She's Scared of Fans

Jennifer Lawrence is on the cover of Vanity Fair‘s holiday issue and she opens up to the magazine about her fear of fans, her thoughts on new boyfriend Darren Aronofsky, and more!

The 26-year-old Oscar-winning actress would not confirm her relationship with Darren, but she said, “he is a visionary.” Check out what she shared with the mag:

On her friendship with Emma Stone: “She texted me that she got my number from Woody [Harrelson]. I replied, ‘F–k off!’ And we’ve been really good friends ever since.” The two of them texted every day for a year after that. “I feel like it was our version of The Notebook—365 texts.”

On her dog, Pippi Longstocking: “I am a psychotic dog mom in a way that I am genuinely embarrassed about. If I could put her inside me and give birth to her I would.” Because of this, Lawrence jokes that having actual children “would be dangerous. My kids would be incredibly jealous because I would still be way more attentive to Pippi than I would to them.”

On her struggle for privacy and her fear of fans: “You might think you know me, but when you approach me you’re a total stranger to me and I’m scared. I get very protective of my space. It took me a long time to be able to do that. But if I’m eating dinner and somebody comes up and a flash goes off from someone’s iPhone camera, I am really rude to that person. Then other people at the restaurant will see and be like, ‘Oh, damn, I don’t want to do that.’ Privacy is a full-time job and I work very hard at it.”

On never being a bridesmaid again: “All of my friends are getting married and having babies. Weddings rock, but I will never be a bridesmaid again. There needs to be a bridesmaids’ union. It’s horrendous. If anyone asks me again, I’m going to say, ‘No. That part of my life is over. I appreciate the ask.’ If I do ever get married, I don’t think I will have bridesmaids. How can I rank my friends?”

On insecurity at Paris Fashion Week: “[It’s] the most intimidating time to be alive. You get ready in your hotel and you’re like, ‘I look awesome.’ Then you walk outside, see the outfits and people who are like seven feet tall, and are like, ‘I am a piece of garbage. I’m not going out anymore.’”

Nothing significant was said about their so-called relationship, just her opinion of him as a filmmaker. These websites are just trying to create interest by making a big deal out of virtually nothing.

Lawrence was spotted in Singapore with Aronofsky. Apparently, he made a joke about escaping from No-Majs (a reference to the recently released Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the new Harry Potter spin-off, and No-Maj is the American Wizarding World equivalent to Muggle) and he was also spotted wearing a Louisville Cardinals cap, just like Chris Martin was back in March 2015.

    Some observations I have made.

    1. In this time, new stills, posters, TV spots, promotional clips, and trailers for Passengers have been dropped. Once again, Sony has pulled out all the stops when it comes for Passengers promotion (maybe to generate some Oscar buzz for it? Don’t know if Passengers is particularly an Oscar film, but then again, I said the same thing about Gravity, and that was nominated) for its Christmas release next month.

    2. As I have mentioned in the past, Aronofsky is producing the Natalie Portman-starring drama, Jackie, where she will play First Lady Jackie Kennedy, the wife of President John F. Kennedy, in her life after his 1963 assassination. Apparently, prior to Aronofsky and Lawrence going to Singapore, he was on a radio show with Portman to promote Jackie some. Plus, the press conference that they attended together in Singapore was for promoting Jackie.

    3. Unlike Passengers, Jackie is only getting a limited release on December 2nd, whereas Passengers is getting a wide release. This leads me to believe that Jackie will get a wide re-release sometime next January or February in order to get more people to see it for Oscar purposes, but it will help for Aronofsky to be seen with Lawrence in order to add some more promotion to Jackie during its limited release.

    4. According to a rumor that I got from a Lawrence fansite Twitter, there are rumors that Mother (the film that Lawrence and Aronofsky worked on together, formerly titled Day 6 as a working title) may be bumped up in release from its original Christmas 2017 release date to Halloween 2017 (which makes sense, as the premise for Mother DOES sound like a psychological horror film) so more promotion for that.

    5. Passengers promotion will be coming up soon, with rumored premieres, so far, being in New York City, LA, possibly London, Madrid, Berlin, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. I would expect Lawrence and Aronofsky to attend these together as well.

    6. Lawrence, once again, says nothing directly about “dating” Aronofsky, just like she did when she was “dating” Chris Martin. Again, PR and tabloids are doing Aronofky/Lawrence’s work for them.

    Clockwork.

  • Blair W

Idk if I fully believe she is there in Singapore, it seems like only 1 person saw her (in a crowded room?) but no one else & no pics. But even if she was, she could be stopping by before going to Madrid.
And idk if DA will follow her to all her premieres & press events, MAYBE just the 1 in LA, since he has his own movie to promote.
Also, I think that radio show interview he did was recorded in LA awhile back. Maybe that’s why DA was in LA @ the time of their not-so-secret dinner date (as opposed to being their to see JL)?

  • deputy barney

Maybe. Doesn’t mean that E! or People won’t make a story out of it. You don’t need paps pics in order to make a story out of it, and with Jackie having been promoted in Singapore and Lawrence heading to Spain to start Passengers promotion, a story like that can work two-fold.

  • deputy barney

Just thought of something else. There have now been two people who have tweeted to have saw her at the Jackie press conference in Singapore, prior to her heading to Paris (Passengers promotion will start in France, not Spain) and it has only been the Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend in the US, and both Aronofsky and Lawrence’s PR teams are American based, meaning that their respective PR teams probably had the holiday weekend off to spend with family and friends. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a report about not just the Singapore press conference that Lawrence may or may not have been at, as well as maybe a bogus story about them celebrating and having Thanksgiving together in Singapore.

After all, though I may be repeating myself, both Aronofsky and Lawrence are in need of some sort of press for Awards Season for the following few months. Like I mentioned in my comment above, Jackie is a limited release Oscar bait film (though I am sure it will be good) that will more than likely have a wide re-release around New Year’s/Valentine’s Day 2017, and Aronofsky has a stake in that what with being a producer on it. Lawrence, on the other hand, needs lots of press for Passengers, which, unlike Jackie, is a big-budgeted special effects drama that may also be getting some Oscar buzz, much like films such as James Cameron’s Avatar and Gravity. However, Sony’s marketing for it has been poor (the first trailer for it didn’t hit until last September, around the time that Chris Pratt’s remake of The Magnificent Seven was released). Since Jackie’s limited release is coming up this Friday (December 2nd) and Passengers will be released three weeks later (Friday, December 23rd) the PR push for a story like that could act two-fold for both Jackie and Passengers. Especially since Passengers will have to compete with Rogue One, the new Star Wars side-story movie. (On a side-note, I wonder if Fox regrets trying to put Joy up against Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens last year.)

Ever since this showmance has gone into hyper-drive, we have seen more stuff about Jackie, and a butt-load of new stuff about Passengers (new pics, posters, TV spots, and even a second trailer).

May sound like a broken vinyl record here, but clockwork.

  • deputy barney

Another update, a behind the scenes interview with Lawrence about Passengers has just been released today. Wouldn’t be surprised if a showmance story was released to push it some more.

  • deputy barney

Hmm, tabs haven’t picked up on Lawrence in Singapore with Aronofsky. Either they didn’t think it was relevant, or the tabs didn’t believe that she was there. However, she is currently in Paris doing the first leg of the Passengers promotion, and even took a selfie with Chris Pratt. Maybe the PR departments are going to try something else, or they’re waiting for Jackie’s release date to get closer before they try something. Probably will get something when we get closer to Friday.

  • Blair W

I was thinking that JL joined DA in Singapore (& apparently went to a popular artisan market with him) in order to get fans to take candid photos of them ‘on vacation together’, put them on social media and then the tabs would pick them up later…just like the Facetime voting story. But obviously that didnt happen.
They’ll both be busy these next few weeks, I’d bet on something going down during the US Passengers premiere.

  • deputy barney

Unless they’re saving that for when Jackie gets its limited release on Friday. Or maybe it was a PR attempt that failed and they need to try again. Guess that happens sometimes, nobody’s perfect.

  • deputy barney

Also checked the Wikipedia pages for both Aronofsky and Lawrence. When it talks about their personal lives, all it mentions, relationship-wise for both of them, is the engagements to Rachel Weisz and Carri-Ann Brant for Aronofsky and Lawrence’s four-year relationship to Nicholas Hoult.

  • deputy barney

Lawrence is now showing up a lot on Chris Pratt’s Instagram account, someone who famously DESPISES social media. Maybe she realized that her pap attempt with Aronofsky in Singapore failed, and she is intentionally appearing on Chris Pratt’s Instagram in order to make up the slack.

  • deputy barney

So far, Passengers has been promoted in Paris, Madrid, and now in London. Berlin, Moscow, LA, and Seoul are supposed to be next. Wouldn’t be surprised if Aronofsky and Lawrence tried another pap walk at the LA premiere (currently dated for December 14th) in order to do a two-fold promotion for Passengers and Jackie, as well as jump-start promotion for Mother. After all, according to rumor, Mother could be bumped from its Christmas 2017 release to a Halloween 2017 release, so who knows?

  • deputy barney

And now a story about her being “engaged” to Aronofsky. Funny how that story is run the DAY BEFORE Jackie gets its limited release.

  • deputy barney

Apparently, Lawrence said something about Aronofsky during her Berlin press for Passengers, however, the interview had a voiceover that translated her response from English into German, and it drowned out her response. Might very well be something about Mother, since this showmance is also promoting that as well.

  • deputy barney

More stuff for Passengers is getting released, Jackie is now out on its limited release, and Lawrence has now been spotted in New York City, whilst only Chris Pratt, according to sources, will be going to Moscow without Lawrence. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got another showmance story sometime within the next week for the sake of promotion. Also, Jackie is nominated for SEVERAL categories at the 2016 Critic’s Choice Awards on Sunday, December 11th. (Six awards, Best Actress for Natalie Portman, along with Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Hair and Makeup, and Best Score). After that, there will be a premiere for Passengers in LA on Wednesday, December 14th, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Lawrence and Aronofsky attended that together.

My idea of how the next two weeks will play out? Lawrence and Aronofsky will probably be seen together, more likely at a Jackie screening to create some buzz ahead of the Critic’s Choice Awards, and then off they will go together to the Passengers premiere in LA. After that, they will more than likely spend the holidays (Hanukkah for Aronofsky, as he is Jewish, Christmas for Lawrence) with their respective families (since Lawrence mentioned she will be back in Louisville for Christmas) and then some more showmance stories to generate Oscar buzz come January.

  • deputy barney

Continuing on that note, Jackie is also nominated at the 2017 Satellite Awards and the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards. The 89th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 26th, 2017. The showmance will probably end and/or go dormant shortly after that for the sake of Lawrence having to get to work on Red Sparrow around that time. Red Sparrow production would even be the perfect out for it, now that I think about it.

  • deputy barney

Also, according to Deadline Hollywood, Jackie will slowly expand its release over the course of December and be a wide-release film by Christmas. Interesting timing, as that is around the time that Passengers is released. Lawrence fans will see Passengers, and, what with the buzz around Aronofsky and Lawrence “dating”, her fans will want to see the movie that her “boyfriend” has a producer’s credit on, and will go to see Jackie, which would more than likely not have been a movie that they would have been interested in seeing in the first place. Therefore, two movies will have a ton of free advertising, advertising it probably wouldn’t have had without this showmance. Kind of fitting, the big-budget film that had a lackluster promotional cycle due to circumstances beyond the studio’s control, and the smaller independent film that would not have had a chance with the bigger budget films (Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and Moana are still in theaters and doing well, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes out in a couple of weeks, after all).

I had theorized that Fox may have had a hand in this. Why else would they plan to coincide the wide-release for Jackie at the same time as Passengers? Aronofsky/Lawrence and Sony/Fox have a tag-team, kill two birds with one stone sort of thing going on here.

  • Blair W

And DA has to edit ‘Mother’ and work on this new movie ‘White Boy Rick’ that he’s producing (slated to film in March). If they’re pure PR then this will be a good time to end things, if they are really dating/friends with benefits then they’ll get bored & move on anyway.

  • deputy barney

Lawrence is currently taping a new episode of Watch What Happens Live with Seth Meyers, to be aired on Monday, December 19th. That’s why she’s in NYC instead of Moscow right now. However, there is still a week before the Passengers LA premiere, so we will probably get something showmance-related this week. More than likely, them going to a Jackie screening in NYC together.

  • deputy barney

Now she was recently seen at a special NYC screening of Passengers with Chris Pratt. Guessing that Aronofsky/Lawrence PR teams are biding their time for either later this week (as the scheduled LA screening isn’t until the 14th) or the LA screening next week.

And now she was asked directly about Aronofsky on two separate interviews, with the interviewer saying “rumored boyfriend”. She cited and expressed her admiration for him as a filmmaker, but nothing about the “relationship.” Funny how this is being asked as Jackie increases its theatrical reach.

    Clockwork.

  • deputy barney

The LA screening/premiere for Passengers is tomorrow. I wouldn’t be surprised if Aronofsky showed up, since both Passengers and Jackie are scheduled to get a wide release around the same time, plus another jump start on promotion for Mother. They will need it if either film hopes to do well against Rogue One: A Star Wars story coming out the week before.

  • deputy barney

No Aronofsky at the Passengers premiere, but Lawrence did field some questions about Mother. Also, the premiere is on the same day as the announcements of the nominations of the 2017 SAG Awards, and Natalie Portman is nominated for Jackie, which Aronofsky is a producer on.

  • deputy barney

Thought of something else. That pic from back in August. Lawrence doesn’t look comfortable when Aronofsky is talking to her. Maybe he was the one who proposed the showmance to her to help him with Jackie? Lawrence isn’t being nominated for anything big with Passengers so far, though that may be because it’s being released after the cut-off for SAG Award consideration, but may be able to get in before Oscar nomination consideration.

  • deputy barney

The first reviews for Passengers are in, and it currently holds a 22% Rotten rating on RottenTomatoes. Apparently, Pratt and Lawrence are being praised for their performances and their undeniable chemistry together, and the premise is being praised as well, but critics are tearing it apart because of its ending (which I don’t know, since I want to see it anyway and am avoiding spoilers), but that is something that is beyond the control of Pratt and Lawrence.

I don’t see any Oscar nods for this one for any acting accolades, the only thing I can see Passengers getting now is technical awards.

This showmance won’t help with the Passengers reviews, but it can help with the Jackie promotion, which currently holds an 88% Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

  • deputy barney

Lawrence was asked if she had a date the previous night, and she said no, she was with her family, but talked some more about Mother. Must be another thing for it.

Also saw a picture of her parents at the premiere. They don’t look pleased with her, something tells me that they know what she’s doing with Aronofsky, and they don’t approve at all.

  • deputy barney

Based on the contexts of some reviews I read, whilst still avoiding spoilers, it seems that critics are irritated by Passengers as the believe that they were mislead into seeing a grand space adventure the likes to rival Star Wars, but got something completely different. I see this as a fault on Sony’s marketing department, as they have screwed up the advertising on the surprisingly great remakes of The Karate Kid and Ghostbusters. However, that is, again, a problem beyond the control of Pratt and Lawrence.

However, it seems that Lawrence has had some bad luck with her end of year roles as of late. Joy had the same problem with the advertising, making it look like it was going to be some great mysterious film about legacy, in order to disguise the fact that it was the biopic of a woman who invented a new kind of mop. That’s what pissed critics off when they saw the final product. Seems that Passengers is going to suffer the same fate as Joy did.

I hope Lawrence can pull out of this. Hate to see her piss away a promising lifelong career on bad film choices.

  • deputy barney

Lawrence was asked a couple days ago on Watch What Happens Live by Andy Cohen if she had a boyfriend (possibly referencing the Aronofsky rumors) but she didn’t respond and absentmindedly played with her drink. However, Jackie is about to get its wide release soon, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was also a showmance thing. After all, Cohen asked the same thing about the Chris Martin rumors last year, and Lawrence gave a very vague response to that question.

    Clockwork.

  • deputy barney

So I saw Passengers. I liked it fine, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence did have undeniable chemistry together, and it wasn’t bad for what was essentially Wall-E meets Titanic. Don’t really know what the critics are on about. It will probably still get its ass kicked at the box office by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, though, unfortunately.

  • deputy barney

I would count on a showmance story sometime after New Year’s. Just to help with Jackie promotion in the awards season.

  • deputy barney

Interesting that the showmance has been quiet over the Christmas holidays, outside of some minor tab references in Lawrence stories. (Also interesting how those minor references are in tandem with Jackie’s wide release, and are mentioning Passengers getting its international release) but Aronofsky was not with Lawrence in Louisville over Christmas.

Tomorrow, Lawrence is going to be a guest on the New Year’s Eve episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, along with Leslie Jones, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Kelly Clarkson. I won’t be surprised if Meyers were to ask Lawrence about Aronofsky and Lawrence won’t respond, or if a showmance story were to follow New Year’s Day, just to help with Jackie’s awards season push and Passengers international release promotion.

Now there are rumors being floated about Aronofsky pursuing a romantic relationship with Charlize Theron. Maybe the showmance is ending soon? The Aronofsky/Lawrence showmance isn’t picking up and doing the job it used to, for Passengers or Jackie. After all, Theron is in the animated film Kubo and the Two Strings, which is up for the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. Since Lawrence isn’t up for any awards this season, and she will be starting production on Red Sparrow soon, it would make sense.

  • deputy barney

Not to mention that the showmance didn’t help with the Passengers reviews. I saw Passengers, and I enjoyed it, and thought that Pratt and Lawrence did very well together in it, but alas, if it got passed over for awards, a showmance won’t change that. Seems that it failed. Plus, since Lawrence is starting production on Red Sparrow soon, she will need to be free for it. Plays into my Fox theory as well.

  • deputy barney

Also, maybe, just maybe, the “break-up” can help with Mother promotion. A story where “Aronofsky and Lawrence found love in one another that wasn’t meant to be,” when it comes time for them to promote next year.

  • james

Dude your theories are insane?!?!? How do you know what goes behind closed doors do you expect her to stay single forever? These fan sites you get your info are from people people who live in there own world making up things in there heads.
