Michael shared that Boomer‘s last name – Phelps – would be a travel issue before heading to the 2016 Rio Olympics, so he and Nicole decided to marry before the games so that Nicole and Boomer would both share the same last name.
“We wanted to try to make it as smooth as we could for them to travel,” Michael told USA Today.
He went on to share that they married in a small ceremony in their backyard with only close friends and family.
When asked if he planned on professionally competing again, Michael had this to say:
I’m still in the pool (for fun). I’m still not coming back.”
