Sebastian Stan's Instagram Post Leads to 'Captain America' Fan Theories!

Sebastian Stan plays the role of the Winter Soldier in the Marvel movie franchise and his latest Instagram post is leading fans to speculate that he could become the new Captain America.

The 34-year-old actor posted a photo of him holding a shield.

“‘Excuse me…where’s the restroom?’ A big thank you and shout out to Casey McBroom @shield_labs for making this for me. Will come in handy… #wintersoldier #marvel,” he captioned the below photo.

In Captain America: Civil War, Chris Evans‘ character Steve Rogers basically turned his back on his role as the superhero. So, is there going to be a new Cap? We’ll have to wait and see!

Turned his back on the role? How do you get that? I’ve watched the movie probably five or six times now. I know no one – not one – that interpreted the ending that way. The interpretation virtually everyone agrees on is that he acknowledged Tony is now leader of the Avengers and that whenever he (or the others he freed) were needed on the team again, they’d come back. Why would that mean he wouldn’t continue to be and act as Captain America? It’s an odd conclusion and apparently arrived at just to pad this theory about Bucky.

Steve dropping the shield signified his resignation as Captain America. He left the shield with Stark. In his letter he told Tony he would there if needed, but that doesn’t imply he will be there as Captain America. In the comics both Winter Soldier and Falcon have taken up the shield and assumed the title of Captain America. What the movies have been showing has been Steve’s struggle to be Captain America and Steve Rogers. In then end he gave up Cap to be Steve and free his friends. I, personally, would find it unlikely that if an attack had happened shortly after CW ended Tony would have anyone but Vision to go to battle with and that hardly qualifies him as a leader even if he is holding the shield. So if Steve isn’t Cap, the comic history has Bucky with the shield, and looking at the actors’ movies deals it doesn’t seem like an odd idea nor does the theory need extra padding.

  • Parker Davis

Good points and I think you’re right that it’s going in that direction. However we know he’s contracted for at least one more Avengers movie and as recently as this past April he was on record saying he wouldn’t mind continuing the role if it was less time consuming as it has been – two film appearances approximately every 18 to 20 mths.

I agree it’ll either be Bucky or Sam eventually (my preference is Sam taking over since he brings less baggage, has the patriotic angle down being a vet and is generally more optimistic personality wise) but I think for the time being Evans isn’t making the kind of noises I’d expect if he really wanted out of the role. Barring something tragic or embarrassing to the studio they have no reason to push him out either, in my opinion.

Agreed. I’d be happy if Evans stayed as well. I imagine his last appearance is scheduled to be Infinity Wars. But RDJ was supposed to have been out a few movies ago. I also think Falcon would be a solid MCU Captain America choice for the reasons you stated. Personally Winter Soldier is one of my favorite characters so I won’t be heart broken if he got the shield, but I doubt he’s ready to deal with more baggage that comes with the title and Stark isn’t ready to not tear his arm off again.
Still even if someone else is Cap, we can still have Steve Rogers if Evans decides to stick around.

  • Parker Davis

Oh wow, that hadn’t occurred to me but yeah he sure could. I hope we do have Evans around for awhile – even in that capacity.

You mentioned the shield and now I’m wondering if we’ll be seeing a new one from T’challa – though the other just needs a paint job. Unless Panthers claws did more than scrstch the paint, which I’m sure they could!
