Emmy Rossum Demands Equal Pay for Women, 'Shameless' Season 8 Held Up in Pay Standoff

Emmy Rossum Demands Equal Pay for Women, 'Shameless' Season 8 Held Up in Pay Standoff

Emmy Rossum is fighting for equal pay for women, including herself, by not allowing Showtime to pay her less than her male co-star on Shameless for future seasons.

The 30-year-old actress reportedly not only wants equal pay, she wants to be paid more per episode than William H. Macy, who has made more than her in past seasons, according to THR.

Emmy has become a focal point of the series in the past season and she even made her directorial debut. She has scored several Critics’ Choice nominations for her work.

William recently was given a pay raise and if Emmy‘s deal is worked out, Showtime will then renegotiate contracts with other stars like Jeremy Allen White and Cameron Monaghan. If she doesn’t agree to a deal, the show could either go on without her or get canceled.

Throughout the years, William, 66, has received three Emmy nominations for his work on Shameless, as well as a Golden Globe nom and a SAG Award win.

It is important to note that equal pay among women is an important topic in the world right now, as women are paid 80 cents for every dollar paid to men. We commend Emmy for fighting for equality!

    Go Emmy!

  • Nelson

    Go Emmy!

  • Sara Corbin

She Totally deserves it! Shes amazing on the show!

  • Viktoriya Orlova

I’m with Emmy, she’s the main star of the show. I thought that she at least earns the same amount of money as William H. Macy and now I’m disappointed.

  • Benny Ehud

I thought she was the lead person on the show lol I have watched it for yrs. I thought she was the focal point.

  • Heidi

YES EMMY! She makes the show. Without her, it would be nothing

  • Benny Ehud

Honestly, I have watched this show for yrs. I didn’t watch ALL of any of the last 3 seasons. But I did watch some of the episodes. I watched episode 1 of season 7 last night.

I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT SHE WAS THE MAIN CHARACTER ON THE SHOW! I thought they moved toward William H. Macy more during the season when he was messing with doctor lol That’s around the time I stopped watching it full-time.

  • Heidi

“uneducated hollywood retards” Puh-lease! The ONLY idiot here is YOU. At least shes fighting for something. What are you doing to fight for equality?? You should be ashamed. People like you are why women can never get ahead

  • Benny Ehud

I NEVER watched it b/c of Frank. I ALWAYS tuned in because of Emmy. I literally thought she was the main character of the show. I had no idea until now that she wasn’t.

I NEVER thought William H. Macy was the star of the show lol I am stunned.

  • Heidi

At least I’m not an ugly, faceless troll. Bye

  • Benny Ehud

Seriously, I have NO PROBLEM with what you said. But I have no problem with her demanding the same amount or more than Macy.

Most ppl think it is her show lol I fully understand her demanding more money. That has NOTHING to do with equal pay. She should be paid as much as him or more just based off of their roles on the show.

  • Heidi

Also, try to refrain from calling people “retards”. Thats an extremely offensive word. For someone accusing others of being “uneducated” you sure don’t know much.

  • Roger Dodger

She seems to have a bigger part in this series than the rest of the actors so of course she should be paid more, should’ve been paid more from the beginning.

  • Roger Dodger

Posters who use name calling in their posts obviously have difficulty making their point so they resort to this childish BS.

  • Benny Ehud

    I ALWAYS upvote my comments. That’s b/c I agree with everything I say :-)

But MACY and Showtime are both delusional if they think it’s Frank’s show. If it’s any one person’s show, it’s Emmy’s. Fiona is why ppl watch the show.

  • Roger Dodger

Speaking of upvoting their own comments…
I’ve seen the same from you so no room to talk, etc.

  • Roger Dodger

Not in the slightest. I’m just very observant.

Why do you continue to change your user name? Are you trying to hide from someone?

  • Hannah the TMZ Montana

Well she definitely has a lot, and I mean a lot less experience than macy so no, she should not be paid more. He’s definitely earned that pay.

  • Gina

There comes a point where one should get paid for the job they do, not what they’ve done in the past. Most people think Emmy is the star of the show and she should be paid accordingly.

  • Amber

Fucking right, girl get that money!

  • Chicken_Paprikash

Nobody can stand her. Before raising salaries , Hollywood must stop people like Rossum from getting parts through cronyism , nepotism and ones religion .

  • benfbeckmaN

While I wouldn’t say she is THE main star, she is definitely one of the main stars. Macy is still credited before her, although the focus is often more on her than on him. I think it’s ridiculous that she gets less because she is a woman. I understand her.

  • Marta Bartok

She deserves every bit as much as Macy. She is a true gem as an actress.

  • Blake

shes been having a focal point since episode 1

  • Mara

Good on her. Except at the same time, William H Macy is arguably the bigger name. Also, if she’s holding up production, that’s potentially jeopardising the income of many people – including women – who are part of the crew. I am torn on this. I agree with her stance, just not sure if this is the best method.

  • Cooper

Actually there is not. Emmy does not have the experience or recognition. Let me ask what job even where you work would you get paid where one person has decades of experience over another? Would you pay someone who has 10 years of experience the same as someone with 20-30 years? I have never ever seen even comparing a man and a man (I work in HR) where they get paid equal. Macy has won two screen actors guild awards, 2 emmys and an oscar nom. Emmy has none for what I can remember. Emmy comes off as the main character in the show I will give you that but Macy is still billed before her. Look at Jlaw and Chris Pratt she got paid more in Passengers as she should she has had more box office performances and awards and her popularity on the big screen has been a couple years longer than him. I disagree that these things do not matter.

  • Gina

Gimme a break. Giving Emmy a raise doesn’t take away from your boy Macy’s credentials; that’s not the point. Emmy being paid the way the lead in a hit TV show should get paid doesn’t take away from the pay Macy deserves as an experienced actor.

  • Legendary Trolly

Maybe thats not the reason she gets less dude. No one is going around paying women less than men. She probably just wasnt as big a star as he was at the time.

  • totalobvi

Now I agree that they should be paid equally, she is a huge part of the show. But at the beginning, William H. Macy was a much bigger star and a bigger draw then Emmy. That’s just the way Hollywood works, I don’t think it was to do with her gender. If it was reversed and Glenn Close played the matriarch of the family and someone like Cameron Monaghan was in Emmy’s role, he would clearly be paid less then her. Or if Glenn Close was matriarch and Emmy was still her daughter she would likely be paid a lot less simply because she is less famous.

  • Utope

Go, Emmy! She’s not just an awesome actress, but she puts her money where her mouth is. She should have made the same money, if not more, as William H. Macy from the very beginning. Fight girl! If Showtime doesn’t pay her what she’s worth and she won’t continue with the series, they’re going to lose a viewer in me, and I predict, many others.

  • Cooper

did I say it did? She should get paid equal to him but to ask for retro pay basically doesn’t make sense. It’s equivalent to an entry level job. You don’t get retro pay when you move up to middle management. She isn’t exactly a household name and wasn’t when the show first started.

  • Gina

Umm, where in the article did it say anything about retro pay? If we are gonna debate, lets at least debate the facts.

  • Cooper

they agreed to pay her the same as Macy but she is demanding more pay going forward because she was paid less for the past seasons. Essentially retro pay. If you read the updates on other websites they go in to more detail. FACT.

  • Gina

Well this problem could’ve been avoided if they had paid her what she deserved several seasons ago. This is clearly her putting her foot down HARD.

  • Cooper

But she was worth anything several years ago. She did phantom of the opera… that’s it. Still at that point WHM was still an award winning actor who had been in a ton of stuff. She was not worth what he was then.

  • Gina

I only care about the here and now. The show is it’s own entity and Emmy brought a lot to it. Macy being paid more at the show’s inception made sense back then, but the show is in it’s 7th season and has taken on a life of it’s own. Macy doesn’t carry the show like Emmy does.

  • Cooper

Then you just agreed with my point lol. Why were you arguing for no reason. It made sense he was paid more. Why would she try to recoup that pay for the past? That is all I am saying. I agreed she should be paid equal to him and I’ll give you this maybe a little more but to ask for that much of a larger sum doesn’t make sense.

  • Gina

Well, your original point didn’t include the retro pay issue. This whole argument could’ve been avoided if it did.

  • Cooper

    Ok

  • benfbeckmaN

Well, she is a bigger star now and she deserves the pay. Anyhow, she did apparently get a raise as she confirmed she would be back and the show was also renewed.
