Mel Gibson Defends Nate Parker: 'I Think He's Innocent'

Mel Gibson, who has been through his fair share of scandal throughout his career, is speaking out to defend another actor/director caught up in a recent controversy: Nate Parker.

The director and star of The Birth of a Nation was accused of rape back in the late 1990s and he was found not guilty. When the case resurfaced this summer, it overshadowed his movie and seemingly has ruined its chances this awards season.

Mel has made racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic comments throughout the years and he has also been accused of spousal abuse.

“I don’t think it’s fair. He was cleared of all that stuff. And it was years ago. You have to follow the system there,” Mel told The Guardian.

“I think he’s innocent of all that stuff. The fact that he has to live with that stigma, and that it affects the art he does, is unfair,” Mel added.

    Mel: STFU!

But then he also believes the Romans were innocent and it was the Jews that killed Jesus.

Yes, Nate Parker wasn’t TECHNICALLY proven guilty, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely free from fault. He wasn’t charged because he had sex with her before, but that doesn’t erase the fact that he knowingly slept with her when she wasn’t in a right state of mind, invited others to join, and then subsequently harassed her at school with his friends. These actions alone show that he’s not a good person and the fact that she committed suicide after the fact says a lot.

It is pretty unwise to speak up for an accused rapist when you were not present during the alleged attack and his co-gang banger was convicted because of the same incident. Besides, most people were more turned off by Parker’s historically false rape scene, choice of co-writer, repugnant statements, and harassment of the alleged victim afterwards than the charge itself. Also, you should tell the woman’s family that he was “cleared” and see how far that gets you.

As far as the suicide part goes, it was years later and really could have had nothing to do with that situation. No one could know but her. She could have been mentally disturbed in general for all we know. It is unfortunate that something like a previous sexual relationship can excuse rape though, if that is true. The chat transcript between he and the girl certainly sounded like he had done something he shouldn’t have but was just being careful not to admit anything outright.

That is true. But I’m sure what he and his friends did to her couldn’t have helped her mental health.
