Meghan Markle Pens Powerful Essay About Being Biracial in Hollywood

Meghan Markle is opening up about what its like to be a biracial actress in Hollywood.

The 35-year-old Suits actress, who has a black mother and white father, admitted to Elle UK that she was initially scared to tell her story.

Meghan explained she grew up in a non-diverse neighborhood, where her mother was often confused for her nanny because she had a darker skin complexion. She watched her mother face discrimination and often felt confusion about her mixed race.

Meghan later added, “Being ‘ethnically ambiguous’, as I was pegged in the industry, meant I could audition for virtually any role. Morphing from Latina when I was dressed in red, to African American when in mustard yellow; my closet filled with fashionable frocks to make me look as racially varied as an Eighties Benetton poster. Sadly, it didn’t matter: I wasn’t black enough for the black roles and I wasn’t white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn’t book a job.”

Finally Meghan found the perfect role on Suits, where producers weren’t casting for any specific look.

“Some households may never have had a black person in their house as a guest, or someone biracial. Well, now there are a lot of us on your TV and in your home with you. And with Suits, specifically, you have Rachel Zane. I couldn’t be prouder of that,” she added.

Meghan concluded, “While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

Can anybody in Hollywood EVER focus on talent? You are an actress. Your looks are a huge part of your success. Nature of the beast.

Some day she will be complaining she is being discriminated against because of her age. As if they are entitled to roles. It’s so old. Nobody owes you anything.

TV and movies are mostly terrible anymore anyway. Too cheap for quality.

It sounds like she wrote a letter to Hollywood to tell them she’s available to be cast, now that she’s gotten fame for being Prince Harry’s girlfriend. “Oh and hey, I can be a black, white or Latin character, fyi ;)” This sounds dubious because I don’t think anyone would have cared about this letter if she hadn’t started dating Prince Harry.

  • Do Tell

It would be nice if Harry and this girl could make it work. She’s very attractive and she has a pleasant, friendly face. She seems independent and like she would be able to handle being married to him.

The Royals aren’t so “royal” anyway, with speculation about who Harry’s real father is and Prince Charles’ racy extramarital affair.

Anyway, I think they look good together.

    racists still occure in hollywood.

Oh please, does she really think any of the U.K press and magazines would be interviewing her if she wasn’t involved with Prince Harry? And her reason for not going to her co-workers wedding was so weak. The wedding was full of actors and actresses so why in the World would anyone care if a nobody like her attended?!?

creating drama, that’s the new thing in hollywood.it’s either sexual harassment or race. I bet she never had a problem with it in her life.

She will never be accepted by The Firm

  • Do Tell

I’ll bet you she has had problems with both. She seems like a nice girl, plus she’s cute. Types like her, no matter what race, get the problems more than someone more take-charge, like, say, Angelina Jolie. I’ll bet men in Hollywood were afraid to harass Jolie. She could slay them with a look.

Sexual harassment happens all the time, not only in Hollywood. It is quite common, but many women don’t say anything.

I’ve been in several situations where bosses were just starting to come on to me, but since the jobs were light, I left before problems began. And that sux to have to do that.

I’ve also seen women in higher positions almost ruined when they rejected successful men’s advances.

There is always some kind of sexual tension going on with married, successful men around attractive women. Notice I said “married,” bc most of the men doing it are married.

It’s still a very big problem.

You call that a problems? You must live with your mom, problem is when you don’t have a job, or money to buy food. Like Mark Walberg said, all these hollywood people live in a bubble

  • Do Tell

If you’re really a man, you probably don’t understand. If a woman boss came onto you, you’d probably have no problem crossing the line with her & getting your jollies.

The last incident I had was 10 yrs ago. The ones before that occurred when I was young and living in a state and community where I never had a problem getting other jobs. Today, things are obviously different for most.

It is a huge problem when a woman needs the job and has no other support and a stupid boss starts dangling the carrot over her head, letting her know that he has the power to make things bad for her.

I’ve seen what happens when a woman rejects these powerful men. They get angry and then it can become like a witch hunt.

One woman I knew had at least 3 married men at the company trying to get into her breeches! One of the men I would have NEVER suspected! The good ol boy, long-time married type of man. She was not coming onto ANY of them. She was just happy, attractive, single, blonde, independent and bubbly. I guess they couldn’t curtail their passions. They were all vying for her at the same time. When she let each of them know she didn’t do that sort of thing, they became a pack of angry wolves and ran her out! She had documented proof for a lawsuit, but she decided to leave peacefully instead. And that’s what many women do, too. They don’t want to go thru the hassle. And the stupid bosses get away with it and continue doing it.

It was totally uncalled for and it taught me a lot. It happens all the time in the private sector.
