Eva Amurri's Night Nurse Dropped Her Son & Cracked His Skull

Eva Amurri Martino is opening up about the terrifying experience she went through when her night nurse dropped her three-month-old son Major James and caused his skull to crack.

The 31-year-old actress and daughter of Susan Sarandon explained what happened in a post on her blog Happily Eva After.

“A couple of days after Thanksgiving, our Night Nurse fell asleep while holding Major and dropped him, and he cracked his head on the hardwood floor,” Eva wrote. “Kyle [Martino] and I were sleeping at the time and were awoken by the sound of his head hitting the floor, and then hysterical piercing screams.”

“He suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on his brain, and was transported by ambulance to Yale Medical Center where I spent two harrowing days with him to receive emergency care and further testing. To say these were the most traumatic and anxious two days of my life is an understatement,” she continued.

“But here’s the good part: by the grace of all of his many angels, and every God one cares to pray to, MAJOR IS FINE. Completely fine,” Eva added. “Though he had the fracture, some skull displacement, and bleeding, the skull did not touch his brain and the bleeding was localized. Further MRI’s showed no brain damage and we were discharged by experts in pediatrics and neurology with as excellent of a prognosis as we could have ever hoped for. We were absolutely, divinely lucky that day. He had no other broken bones, and no spinal effects whatsoever. He has been healing well, hitting milestones, cooing, smiling, and generally showing us that he is and will be ok as he grows and develops.”

Eva says that she experienced guilt and depression after the experience and now does not feel safe letting other people watch her children. She is also the mother of a two-year-old daughter Marlowe.

“Let me tell you– the guilt I bore in the days and weeks after this accident was more intense and more damaging than anything I would wish upon my worst enemy,” Eva said. “I wept in the hospital, telling anyone who would listen that it should have been me. That I was to blame… And even though I finally made peace with the fact that this freak accident could not have been avoided by me, it has continued to effect me to my core and in all aspects of my daily life.”

“It’s nearly impossible for me to trust anyone but myself to take care of Major now. We definitely don’t have night time help anymore, but it has only been in the past week or so that I have felt comfortable with somebody coming during the day to help me with him so that I can complete normal tasks and work responsibilities. Hearing Major cry hard immediately triggers my memories of the moments after the accident and instigates an immediate panic attack– my heart races and tears spring to my eyes. Sometimes I get dizzy spells. I feel nauseous and overwhelmed and even small discomforts he has make me anxious. My appetite has decreased to nothing, I have a hard time getting to sleep after night time feedings, and my milk supply goes up and down depending on the stresses of the day. Any time we are near an edge or a ledge, I fear that he will fall, somehow, and be hurt again,” she said.

She had a night nurse??? Can’t she take care of her own child at night???

  • Blake

celebrities…its not like she has to work the whole day and needs sleep at night, and the older one sure sleeps through the night, so why on earth does she need a night nurse?

  • Tom

“fell asleep and dropped baby on head”??? BS story if ever their was one.

  • BermudaTriangle

Proving the point that some people should not breed (take care of your own children or do not have them).

  • Erich

Hey, here’s an idea…TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN DAMN KIDS!

  • Bruce Keller

I’m guessing the night nurse probably got fired.

  • Maga Tron

This whole story kinda feels like she dropped her kid and blamed the nurse. Any childcare professional would have had huge legal issues with negligence and a lot of scrutiny opened up into night nurses not being up to par. But when this is researched the only thing you find about it is this. A movie star didn’t have a person who dropped their kid investigated and shamed? Never heard that fairytale before.

  • larry

Mothers are drama queens. She said she now realizes nothing she did could have prevented this. LIke wow. Suppose you watched your own baby; then this would not have happened. Must be a liberal; because liberals are very good about lying and passing blame.

  • LittlePaperStars

Mother needs help with her children, it’s not a crime. She has a job, a toddler and a new born, she’s admitted to struggling with her husbands accident on top of this and some post partum depression and anxiety issues. Give the woman a break. She’s not superwoman. Whether it was a night nurse or whether it was her or her husband that fell asleep and dropped Major, the fact remains the baby had a serious accident and luckily he’s okay. I’m sure anyone who chastises someone for bringing in extra childcare help, day or night, would do the same thing if they could afford it and felt overwhelmed. Or perhaps the people who judge her are all just such perfect parents who’ve never had to deal with anything, actually I bet none of them are parents at all.

  • Patricia Gibson

I’m so happy to hear that the baby is ok. But I would also like for her to look up Munchausen and Munchausen by proxy. Because her story turned towards her suffering so quickky, showcasing her feelings. This is okay but if she starts dwelling on it too much she may need help.

  • Patricia Gibson

No people do fall asleep at night. And many people have dropped the babies before.

  • Casey C

there is zero proof to say ‘this would not have happened’. do you think mothers don’t have accidents with their babies? do you think parents don’t fall asleep and drop their babies? that kids don’t get hurt while their parents watch them? regardless of who is watching a child they can and will get hurt

  • Casey C

same could be said of her though – an investigation would have been opened into her had she been the one to drop him. social services would have been on her like glue

  • Casey C

kids get hurt regardless of who is watching them.

  • Kat

They have the worst of luck with nannies, but it will be fine kids are resilient.

  • parisjok dean

her mom is very rich and she might have given that to her only daughter as a gift and she has a hard working husband and she also does a little something something herself. I had the same help as a gift from my in laws after a second c-section. it was the best gift I could have received at the time. I felt like a queen while my body was heeling from surgery!!!

why can’t she have a little overnight help for the first few months if it is affordable to her family? the famous actor Alex Baldwin’s much younger wife has three nannies plus other house hold help to make her day a lot easier!!!!

to many many haters for this mom just because she has temporary night time help to get a better night’s sleep.

  • Gigi La Moore

Why is voicing an opinion “hating”? You voiced yours as well, so I guess you are “hating” also? There are a lot of things I would have wanted help with (cooking, cleaning, washing clothes). However, I wouldn’t have felt right sleeping like a baby while a stranger was up with my baby. That’s just me. Obviously, people have the right to do what they want.

Terrifying ordeal, I’m happy the child is fine. On a side note, Eva is a horrible writer.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

Babies that age wake A LOT in the night, and they easily get addicted to their mothers’ coming to feed and comfort them, so they will do the same behaviors night after night until they’re old enough to be sleep-trained. Even after sleep-training there’s no guarantee. I can totally understand a busy mom needing help at night. I wouldn’t judge her negatively for this. But I do negatively judge her terrible writing “skills”.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

Right? I THOUGHT she was the one who had another horrible nanny story. I couldn’t remember, but yep it was her.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

It is intensified by her terrible, overly dramatic writing. She writes like a cheap novelist, really. She deliberately chose words and phrases to intensify her suffering (“tears sprang to my eyes”, who talks like that??).

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

What she doesn’t realize is that it just as well COULD have been her. Accidents happen. It’s just that a parent gets to fire a nanny. But if the parent does it they can’t fire themselves, so they just go around feeling horrible. Babies are made with soft skulls and bones for a reason.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

    EXACTLY.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

She was probably rocking the baby. Here’s where I think the problem might have been: Eva probably required the nurse to stay awake all night for “just in case” moments. So the nurse, probably sleepy, fell asleep from the rocking motion. Or this story is just bullshit.

She sounds like she has PTSD and needs to be treated for it. She has gone thru a terrific trauma. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

  • Cory Booker

Because people who aren’t the parent are more likely to drop a kid and crack their skull.

Who falls asleep holding a baby? Total incompetence if true.

She is a terrible mother taking advantage of the fact that she is rich and hiring someone else to raise her children. She got what she deserved having her son probably suffer from future brain damage.

  • j b

Because she is rich and can afford it.

  • j b

Oh boo hoo rich woman who does nothing all day needs her sleep and doesn’t want to have to wake up to feed the baby. Boo hoo.

  • j b

She reminds me of Queen Victoria who had a Nanny raise her kids to teenagers and never saw them until then.

  • j b

The Nanny was probably being paid slave wages by this celebrity and was expected to be up all night. Can’t be surprising she fell asleep with the baby in her arms.

  • silus

You would think the reality of holding a helpless, vulnerable baby would trump every other concern.

  • LittlePaperStars

The baby has been given the all clear of any damage by doctors and made a full recovery, saying a baby getting injured is what a mother deserved because she brought in some help when she felt overwhelmed is disgusting.

  • Gina

Eva has the worst luck when it comes to caregivers, it seems. Didn’t she fire a nanny for lusting over her husband once?

  • SaraJ

What’s her job? She hasn’t acted in anything in years. She has a nanny AND a night nurse (the other story is she fired the nanny for texting her husband). When exactly is she being a mom??

  • SaraJ

Yeah, when you have 2 or 3 at once, sh*t’s gonna happen.

  • SaraJ

I was with you until you said the dumb part about being a liberal. Idiot.

  • LittlePaperStars

As far as I can tell she’s in the process of building a business through her blog, but I guess people will just be judgey about that too. I cant actually believe people so against someone for admitting they need help, or is it just because she happens to have money and be able to afford it that people find it so offensive. Marlowe and Major are clearly being brought up in a loving environment, accidents happen, heaven forbid a mother wants a little time to herself, or feels she can function better with more sleep, or wants to do something where she can;t take her kids or keep an eye on them all the time. What a crime. Just because other people have to struggle and sacrifice and she doesn’t, doesn’t mean she should be villainized for her parenting choices

  • SaraJ

Sitting at home and typing on a blog is not a job, I’m sorry. Creating content for one, maybe.
It’s just so sad that she’s willing to put her children in the care of others all the time – day time AND night time nurses and nannies – and not do her part as a mother. Her children will have issues, all so she can live out her rich girl fantasies.
Hopefully this skull fracture was a wake-up call. Who knows if the kid will even be normal at this point?

  • LittlePaperStars
