Jennifer Holliday Pulls Out of Inauguration Concert, Apologizes to LGBT Community

Jennifer Holliday has announced she will no longer perform at the welcome concert for Donald Trump‘s Presidential Inauguration festivities after she realized how she hurt her LGBT fans.

The 56-year-old Tony-winning actress originated the role of Effie in Dreamgirls on Broadway and she just wrapped a run in The Color Purple.

A big part of Jennifer‘s fan base lies in the LGBT community and she decided to pull out of the event after backlash from them.

Jennifer says the concert was presented to her as the “Welcome Concert for the People” and she focused on that when she made her decision to perform.

“My only choice must now be to stand with the LGBT Community and to state unequivocally that I WILL NOT PERFORM FOR THE WELCOME CONCERT OR FOR ANY OF THE INAUGURATION FESTIVITIES!” Jennifer wrote in an open letter obtained by TheWrap.

Jennifer Holliday’s Open Letter to the LGBT Community

Please allow me this opportunity to speak to you directly and to explain why I originally made my decision to perform at the inauguration which was what I had thought would be my simply keeping in my tradition of being a “bi-partisan songbird” having sung for Presidents Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush.

I was asked to sing a song for what was presented to me as the “Welcome Concert For The People”” in my mind I was reflecting on the past times of being asked to sing for presidents and I only focused on the phrase “For The People”… I thought, For America!

I was honestly just thinking that I wanted my voice to be a healing and unifying force for hope through music to help our deeply polarized country… Regretfully, I did not take into consideration that my performing for the concert would actually instead be taken as a political act against my own personal beliefs and be mistaken for support of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

In light of the information pointed out to me via the Daily Beast article on yesterday, my only choice must now be to stand with the LGBT Community and to state unequivocally that I WILL NOT PERFORM FOR THE WELCOME CONCERT OR FOR ANY OF THE INAUGURATION FESTIVITIES!

I sincerely apologize for my lapse of judgement, for being uneducated on the issues that affect every American at this crucial time in history and for causing such dismay and heartbreak to my fans.

Please know that I HEAR YOU and I feel your pain. The LGBT Community was mostly responsible for birthing my career and I am deeply indebted to you… You have loved me faithfully and unconditionally and for so many years you provided me with work even though my star had long since faded.

Thank you for communicating with me, I had no idea that I still meant so much to all of you.

Thank you for your posted comments both the good supportive ones as well as the ugly hurtful ones.

With LOVE & Appreciation,

“The Original DreamGirl”

That was quick. Know where your bread is buttered. That would have been a one time check, she still has to eat. Not worth ruining her whole life over.

I applaud her for sticking by her principles.

  • Legendary Trolly

Why is the LGBT community mad at her?

  • sydney jane

I guess I missed something, but what does the LGBT community have against Trump? He supports gay marriage. They had no problem voting for Obama in 2008 when he said he was AGAINST gay marriage. Same with Hillary. Both she and Obama only came out in support for gay marriage a few years ago when it was politically convenient for them. Just another example of what hypocrites liberals are. Both Obama and Hillary pal around with tyrants who would have every gay person hanged, or rappers who are extremely homophobic….and yet that’s okay, for some reason.

  • illumina

There was an uptick in the number of gays attacked and beaten since the election [FACT] with many of the perpetrators voicing that they expected Trump to deal with gays once he’s in office. Trump may support gay marriage but he’s perfectly content to let these followers believe he will turn back the clock. Making America Great Again is code language for denying rights to women, minorities, and the LGBT community and gays are onto his strategy. He doesn’t care as long as he can keep his followers pacified.

Liberals don’t care about the facts :)

    > she realized how she hurt her LGBT fans

Her decision will hurt the whole LGBT community. Good job :)

Another coward caving in to Hollywood bullies.

  • HG

Wow! The tolerant party bullies again!! This is why trump will succeed and get four more years! Hollywood and hate filled democrats who are also crooked and we saw how bad! Is the reason they lost the senate house and presidency under obozos watch!!! Keep up the good work I’m sure president trump is grateful for all you do.

  • HG

Wrong !! Now she has lost the respect of the rest of America and been labeled a coward who can be bullied by liberals !!!

  • cutitout

Lets be real, she does not need the “respect” from these people, she needs to pay her rent. From what they claim during the last election cycle they are all poor and in such dire straights, they certainly don’t have money to go to one of her shows or appearances… Their health care has gone up 50 million percent! Becky can only afford ONE starbucks a day???

  • cutitout

If trump had run as an independent or democrat they could be sure that the rights that the LGBT community have achieved would be safe, but when Trump says that he will elect conservative justices, we all know that that does not mean that they will be supporting LGBT rights and protections.

If Trump really supports LGBT rights then he would pick judges that are more progressive. “Support” is one thing but you have to put your money where your mouth is. I mean, have you read the republican platform? Did Trump not pick someone who believes in “conversion therapy” as his vp pick?????? Can’t have it both ways, you have to live it out all the way. One way or the other.

So, you don’t have any proof :)

  • illumina

No proof will suffice if you can’t read or reason.

  • John Dow

You have no proof. You are full of shit, just like your source (SPLC).

Educate yourself about the source. This is one of many articles about how SPLC lies to idiots like you and use bullshit data for their statistics to spread their agenda:

«At least 2,000 educators around the country reported racist slurs and other derogatory language leveled against white students in the first days after Donald Trump was elected president. But the group that surveyed the teachers didn’t publish the results in its report on Trump-related “hate crimes.”»

«“They left that result out because it would not fit their ideological narrative,” former Education Department civil rights attorney Hans Bader said. “It was deemed an inconvenient truth.”»

«Founded in 1971, SPLC claims to be a nonpartisan civil rights law firm. But it receives funding from leftist groups, including ones controlled by billionaire George Soros. And a review of Federal Election Commission records reveals that its board members have contributed more than $13,400 to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns.»

«Bader says SPLC has an agenda to derail the Trump administration before it starts.»

«the SPLC acknowledges that it has not independently verified any of the claims. It collected most of them on its website, many anonymously.»

«Bader pointed out that most of the anti-minority “hate crimes” and “hate incidents” cited by SPLC do not legally constitute hate crimes, and many involve constitutionally protected speech.»

«“It is simply ridiculous that SPLC treats ‘build the wall’ as hate rhetoric,” he said. The center counted people mentioning “build the wall” as 467 incidents of hate.»

  • Penny Dreadful

I’m not going to click on that. I expect people to be intelligent enough to back up their claims with their own words.

The Southern poverty law canter will put people and organizations on it’s list for donations. Respected 30 years ago, they are a gun for hire now.
I support the LGBT to half the life style and beliefs they want, I expect them to act the same way, or they lose my support.

Just another pathetic sniveling whiner baby that refuses to support a president that not only has nothing against the LGBT community but totally supports them!! You just continue to show the world how pathetic you truly are by pulling out.
