Blu-Ray and Digital HD Releases Today
Queen of Katwe
Disney’s telling of the true story about chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi comes out on Blu Ray this week. The uplifting film follows this young Ugandan girl from a poor village who learns chess from a local coach to only find she has a natural gift in the game. From there, she grows into a chess champion, despite being ridiculed by her richer peers, and gains respect as she rises to the international levels of chess.

Based on an ESPN article, Director Mira Nair and screenwriter William Wheeler weave together a touching and uplifting story fitting under the Disney name. Disney has been no stranger to the true life feel-good stories, creating hits like Million Dollar Arm.

The film is beautifully shot with each scene colorfully standing out in its 1080p format. The sound is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The release also includes a few special features including a 3 part look at creating the film, audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a short that centers on Robert Katende, the coach that taught Phiona how to play chess.

If you’re looking for a feel-good inspiring film, Queen of Katwe is a great pickup.

Pinocchio
Back from the vault, Disney’s animated classic Pinocchio arrives on Blu-ray. For the first time, the Disney animated classic is offered in Digital HD.

The film follows a magical puppet, Pinocchio, created by a lonely woodcarver named Geppetto. Pinocchio’s only wish is to become a real boy, but he must prove himself worthy. Guided by his cricket friend Jiminey, Pinocchio sets off in the world to only be caught up in a puppet show, a deceitful island where boys turn into donkeys, and a large monstrous whale standing in his way.

The new Signature Collection version carries a lot of the extras from the previous release but also includes new never-before-seen content as well. This release includes a two part supplement on the making of Pinocchio, a re-creation of Walt Disney discussing the Pleasure Island scene, and a “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit” short pulled from the vault.

The new release is recommended for any who are looking for the digital release of this classic and is a great addition to the blu-ray collectors who haven’t picked it up before.
