My mom and her family were living in Detroit, near 8 mile, at the time, my mom was only 8-9 during the time but she remembers some things. She had siblings 10 years older who witnessed more and it’s crazy. My mom’s family moved from Detroit, in a “middle of the night” sort of way and moved back to my grandma’s home state, where we still all live.

My family is white though, so the amount that they saw VS. what the black community saw, totally different. Worse than what my family saw and experienced. Although because of what they went through, it made my grandma distrustful of black people, which always angered me. I tried for decades to get my grandma to understand and change her view. It’s sad, knowing why ’67 happened, it was an uprising, a demand for civil rights, it was anger and confusing, but it wasn’t because black people are bad, it happened because they were rightfully angry and mad. So it saddens me that my grandma couldn’t understand that and used it to stereotype an entire race of people for most of her life.

I will say, just a few months before my grandma died, she changed! Because my cousin married a black man and she met him. I hadn’t met him yet when they married because they met while my cousin was living in Guinea for the peace corp and he’s from Guinea and when he was finally able to come to the US, they went to see my grandma only at that time, so not all of the family met him right away. I ended up moving in with my grandma to be her caretaker and we’re watching the news when she was going to say something racist and she stopped and said, “oh if I say that, it would be offensive towards Oumar”. Jaw drop! It was so beautiful to see, she changed!!!! I’m so glad I was there to witness that. It finally clicked that stereotyping an entire race is wroooooong.

Okay, now that my story is done, I just wanted to write it to give just 1 little part of that history and how it trickled down my family. I didn’t live through that time, but it effected my family in some way that I live with each day, it effects my life because I don’t want any family, no matter their skin color, to go through that, and to educate people that racism is a learned experience AND CAN BE CHANGED. So never stop informing and educating until ignorance is eradicated.

Hope I made sense throughout all that :-)
