Emmy Rossum Writes Emotional & Inspiring Letter to Fans

Emmy Rossum took to Facebook to write a letter to fans about growing up with a single mom. With the letter, Emmy wanted to thank her mom, and those who made her feel welcome despite growing up without a father.

The 30-year-old Shameless star began, “If you have a single parent, read this. If you’ve been through sexual assault, health scares, grief and loss, hate and violence, job loss or really anything and want to find resilience, read this. Just take two minutes and read this.”

The letter came after Emmy saw Katie Couric interview Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and psychologist Adam Grant about their newest book “Option B.”

“The talk really hit me hard when Sheryl and Katie Couric (who lost her husband Jay to colon cancer when her daughters were 2 and 6) spoke about suddenly becoming single moms. How they never realized how hard it really was, how ostracizing it can feel for children. How hallmark holidays like “Father’s Day” and activities like the school “Father Daughter Dance” which once seemed like happy, easy, fun traditions suddenly became almost suffocatingly painful,” Emmy continued. “When they talked about this, I reached over and grabbed Sam‘s hand and squeezed.”

Meh. I like Emmy Rossum–a lot–but I don’t have much use for Sheryl Sandberg. Sandberg is an immensely wealthy Facebook executive who’s fond of telling working women that to get equal treatment in the workplace, all they need to do is “lean in” or similar meaningless platitudes. She seems to have no idea how hard it is for ordinary working women to cope with wage inequality, sexism, sexual harassment and any number of other obstacles.
