John Legend Brings the 'Power of the People' to NYC

John Legend is speaking out about an important cause in NYC.

The 38-year-old entertainer joined Close Rikers & Free America: Power Of The People discussion on Monday (May 8) at The New School in New York City.

John was there to advocate for the closing of Rikers Island, a jail complex in New York.

“Rikers exists in large part because of that population of people that cannot afford bail,” John said on stage, while explaining that 80% of the population there have not been convicted of a crime.

He added, “When we talk about reducing our population in these jails and making it easier to close Rikers, the biggest hurdle is making sure that no one’s locked up because they’re too poor to pay $1,000. If your only difference is that you’re poorer, that should not be the reason why you’re locked up.”
