John McEnroe Won't Apologize for Serena Williams Comments
John McEnroe made some controversial comments about Serena Williams and where she would rank if she was playing the men’s circuit… and now he says he won’t apologize.
The former tennis star said that Serena, who he admitted is the greatest female tennis player in the world, would only rank #700 if she was playing in the men’s league.
Serena took to Twitter to respond to the comments and she rightfully did not seem happy about what he said.
While appearing on CBS This Morning on Tuesday (June 27), John was asked why he made the comments.
“I respect Serena very much so,” John said. When asked if he would like to apologize though, he said “no.” He did admit that his comments were “not necessary,” but he did not think they’d create controversy.
“I don’t want anything to go wrong with Serena because she’s pregnant. I don’t want to upset her or whatever it was. She’s – I think she was doing a tongue-in-cheek as well,” he added. “I can’t even believe we’re talking about it.”
