Ivanka Trump Sits in President's Seat at G20 Leaders Table
Ivanka Trump‘s presence at the G20 Economic Summit is causing an uproar after she sat in for her father, President Donald Trump, at the leaders’ table.
The 35-year-old First Daughter, who serves as an unpaid adviser to her father, briefly sat in his chair while he took some one-on-one meetings during the summit on Saturday (July 8) in Hamburg, Germany.
Photos that surfaced on Twitter showed Ivanka sitting in between Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May and Chinese President Xi Jinping at one point during the meeting.
While it seems odd for Ivanka to be at the leaders’ table, this practice is in line with what other nations do during the summit. Leaders are allowed to bring their staff into the room and other people took the place of other leaders when they left the room as well.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who hosted the summit, defended Ivanka‘s place at the table.
“Ivanka Trump belonged to the American delegation, so that is in line with what other delegations do. And it is known that she works at the White House and carries responsibility for certain initiatives,” Merkel said (via Fortune).
